Practice what you preach is something I've been abusing lately and it's only been recently that I've picked up the sketchbook and been doodling more. It's so easy to jump straight in, what with all the software and plugins out there, but it's a schoolboy error not to prep. What I wanted to ask, out of curiosity and to start a little discussion is what method do you (usually) apply for designing a site? Do you sketch it out on a pad, napkin etc, go straight to your graphic program such as PS or go head first and decide in the browser? Of course there is a mixture of designers and developers on here so I appreciate graphic design is not everyone's cup o' tea but per…

Another product promotion... This time for something a bit cheaper! When designed it can often be hard to use plain paper, as you don't have a grid format etc, and then as soon as you get squared paper, the sqaures get in the way! The way around it... Dot Grid! There are a few suppliers around, but this is the first one from the UK. I've bought a couple of their books, and they are amazing due to their paper quality and also the fact it turned up the next day! They've most recently bought out a new book, but with iPhone dimensions printed inside (great for App Designers!). http://www.dotgrid.co + Also worth checking their Twitter & Facebook as they…

The complete Glyphish set is currently at $75! This includes all the icons from Glyphish 3, 4, 5 and 6, all in two sizes for full retina support, plus some beautiful app backgrounds and colour illustrators only available in this complete set. So in total saving 25% (compared to if you was to purchase each set individually). http://www.glyphish.com *I am in no way affiliated with them. I just thought I should share it! The quality of the icons are amazing.

Looking for a simple to use, free utility so that I can annotate images with lines, curves, circles or text comments to highlight certain features. Don't need a heavyweight comprehensive graphics editor - just to do that. Should work with jpegs or bmps, and can delete anything added to correct mistakes.

Hi guys! Here I am with a new work. This time, I have to make a logo for a shop of female lingerie called "Mistress". I still have to add details and text, but I'd like to receive comments on the basic shape before I go on. Basically, I wanted to create a kind of serif "m". Bye!

Greetings to the Web Designer Forum! I'm currently a student trying to learn web designing~ long story short, I started school as an illustration major and ended up switching to graphic design to become a ui/ux designer. I just recently started learning the ropes to web designing and wanted to hopefully get a critique on a mock mini-site assignment that i've been working on these past weeks. research: wireframe: mock up (so far): So i guess my question is - am i on the right track here? what is this missing/lacking? and what can i do to improve it or improve the way im working/seeing/thinking about web designing? my goal is to eventually get into ui/ux design a…

Right: it's been yonks since I wrote and article and feeling a little inclined to write about responsive/adaptive images as it's a "sensitive" subject. That big ol' can of worms. I'm not writing an article here though, just would like to get some response (look out for the puns) on others' methods. At the moment I'm attempting to edit a super simple page where when you change from mobile up, the image changes based on the breakpoint. My current train of thought is doing it in CSS as backgrounds - lowers requests and easy to implement. The biggest issue doing this is being able to configure the actual image. I can use background-size: contain and that's all fine and da…

I spent about 3 to 4 hours using Paint brushes, ink bucket, inkscape etc to make the blotches away. After like touching and retouches those unsighlty blotches when I open up my logo, it comes back to square one. I would like to seek advice how to make them go away for good. Any free tool online or downable would be the best. Hope to hear from anyone out there. Thanks!

Hi I have the task of re-designing the basic logo from this site 21 Entertainment. The client wishes it to remain simple, same colours but wants to add the word entertainment in there somewhere. Also the new logo will be started from scratch as the one currently used is quit pixelated. Looking for some inspiration as to what others would do with this. Thanks for all your help.

Hi there, I've hit a bit of a brick wall with my web design learning curve. Seems like every site needs a good logo, and I'm really confused about how to produce them. I've got photoshop, and know the basics of how to use it, but it seems the resolution of the text it produces is just too low to look good on the web. For example I want to make a logo/banner/what's it actually called? like this: What I need to know, is how would a pro go about producing something like this? I'm aware of the distinction between vector and raster graphics, and I can produce svgs using Inkscape. I want to avoid this solution though, because i use wordpress, and the svg suppo…

Hi guys, I have Adobe Creative Suite and I did Graphic Design in college many years ago now (about ten). Very different now with, so I was just watching a tutorial on After Effects (never used it before), and it looks really cool. But I just thought, what's the point in me learning this, when websites now need to be responsive? I don't want to upgrade to the new CC Adobe pack as I think the idea of renting your software is ridiculous. Sorry guys, one more thing, just out of interest, what software do they use (on mac preferably) to create 3d graphics? When I say 3d I mean actual 3d coming out at you on the tv. Not Blender (maybe Blender does it?).

Hey, bit of an odd one this. So I have a bicycle wheel that is 622mm in height (from edge of Rim to other edge) I am cutting out a circle with vinyl to stick round the wheel to change its colour. So, I go into AI and create a circle that Is 622mm. I then give it no fill but have an inside stroke to match the width of my wheels edge. I then expand the shape, half it, then half it again to get a quarter. This then is die cut out using my vinyl cutter. The issue is, when sticking them round the edge of the wheel I am left with about a 2inch gap. Surely it should fit perfectly with 4 strips? Can you see any reason why this doesn't work?

Hello! I'm a new web designer and working on a logo for my first client. I've chosen PT Sans a nice (in my opinion), free font for his logo but my client is concerned that the 'a' appears lower than the other letters in his company name. Sure enough, the bowl of the 'a' dips slightly below the baseline (as does the 's' and others). I'm preparing alternatives but many sans-serifs share this feature. Are there any font experts out there who can explain this aspect of font design so I can relay it to this and future clients? Thanks so much! Sincerely, Stephen

Can anyone give a personal recommendation of a stock images site they've had a good experience with? Never use them but need something royalty free (ideally free or cheap as it's low budget) and with a reasonable selection. It's a one off so not looking to sign up for anything long term. Outside of Stock Xchng, Wikipedia and manually going through Google Images, like I'm doing now, I'd like to know if anyone can recommend a site that I may have missed/not known about. If it has any relevance, the images I require are mostly scenic such as coastlines, sunsets, etc... Thanks in advance. ** Just to note that I intend to go take the photos myself over the weekend …

Hi I am creating a 4ft by 4ft board for a company, I am confused on how to set up the canvas for this as its ending up roughly 14000 x 14000 pixels with 300dpi. This seems like too big of a canvas to work with and seems extremely laggy and feels like forever before I'll finish the project. Is there a simplier way to do this for example working in half the width/height? If someone could give me some advice that would be great. Willows

Yes, another one of those topics asking for logo feedback! This is what I am currently using on my website: I'm not sure if I'm right, but it feels a little sharp. I would like something that seems 'friendlier'. This is what I've come up with. What do you think? Any feedback is appreciated! Is this new logo better or worse than the original?

Hi Not sure of the correct terminology to use but here goes. What i am trying to achieve is have one image of a set of curtains at a window which i will call the base image for now, then apply different colours to the curtains only on the base image but keep the fabric folds and tie backs showing, this way i will have multiple images of the same room scene with different colour curtains. I have a web site selling curtains so rather than take a separate image of every colour of curtains i sell i would rather use the colour swatches i have then add to the base image. I have tried to do this but i loose the fold and tie back detail plus the end image looks fa…

I recently decided to narrow my focus as regards to graphic design. I realized that I wasn't making any real headway being an all round logo designer as there are so many different directions to go in. So I decided to focus specifically on calligraphy and custom lettering. I also like to create mascots and vector illustrations too which I'm already fairly accustomed to already but I'm trying to decide if I want to make the custom lettering a separate brand from my vector illustration. The downside is that I'd have to make a separate website, twitter, facebook, youtube etc. but I like the idea of having a brand that's purely dedicated to custom lettering and calligraphy …

Hello, I am looking to work with a freelance Graphic Designer that is experienced with designing websites (Wordpress & Opencart), as well as logo design. I am a freelance website developer and i am looking to expand the range of services i can offer to my clients. I can and do currently design the sites i develop myself, but it's not my strong point, and i can't do logo design or other types of graphic work, so i'm looking to outsource these jobs to someone. Ideally i am looking for a longer term working relationship so i can keep the quality of the work consistent. We can work things out on a job by job basis. I am preferably looking for someone in the UK…

Hey everyone i came across such an annoying problem in photoshop today, never have before, i have no idea how it came about or how to fix it. I took an image put a rectangular box over it, then created text and put that on top of the box, with about one or two lines of text. I kept the exact same font type, colours everything as the bit that says scott cherrie personal training, however the text is blurred and the blue looks not nearly as sharp, i dropped the opacity about 15% but that is not what is causing it. The website is http://www.cherrietestingwebsite.org/ as you will notice the text on the image in the bottom right is blurred. I tried resetting the settings t…

Greetings I was going to put this in a profile feed but feel we could benefit on some input on this. Well, I hope others feel the same way at least So, designing for yourself can be a drag but one of the benefits is the experimentation of it all. I'm thinking of implementing svg files throughout my site. In terms of file size they are a little higher than a .png, but if you use GZIP, you can reduce by 30%. Apparently. Also, they scale well so no need for fiddling for retina. Despite support across the board, Internet Explorer 9 and below don't support SVG. Not the end of the world as I can add a fallback and it works too. However, I'm wondering if it's worth…

I get the feeling there's a certain snobbery towards Fireworks when it comes to Photoshop. Apart from complex effects etc, I don't see anything a Photoshop user can't do, and may I say, much quicker, Fireworks is a fantastic program for churning out layouts/templates/wire-framing and I personally speaking, much prefer it to Photoshop for this reason. Now don't get me wrong I wouldn't be doing any major design art-working with Fireworks, but for websites, i think it rocks... I've been exploring effects and things, and if you know what you're doing can achieve very good results that would probably be on par with photoshop (For the web). What's other peoples thoughts on …

Illustrator and I aren't getting on at the moment. Each time I export some artwork to a pdf on the Adobe PDF/X1-a preset (as setup by the printer - it's always worked before) I get a couple of outlines appearing on the artwork that look like editable strokes. A few other people have experienced this as well from a quick search. Apparently the lines won't print out on a print setup, but they do with a home/office printer. I don't want to take the risk in sending it for print (besides, I want to sort it out as I have never had the issue before). I have flattened the transparencies and need to adhere to the X1-a preset and comply with older versions. ** I've still…

I:m wanting to create a highlightable image- that is a image where when the mouse hovers over certain sections they change colour. And I don't want to have to get involved with flash to do this. Does anyone know of any way it can be done? So far the best idea I can come up with is for another image to appear on top of the prior one when certain conditions are met. This however seems a rather primitive and clumsy work around. I'm sure this can be done properly somehow.
