  1. I've recently come into possession of a pair of Dell Poweredge r710 servers. They look pretty old, but are in superb condition - and I got them for free so can't complain 😁 There are no drives (something to do with GDPR) but the CPUs, PSUs, RAM, fans and ethernet ports etc all work fine. I've seen a lot of folks with home labs, and am very blessed that a way to "join the club" fell into my lap. With that said.. what kinds of things can/should I do with them? Unraid and use it as a Plex server along with a low profile Intel A310 for hardware transcoding? TrueNAS and use it as a means of sharing family photos using Immich? Alma Linux and run Sc…

I am using 20i free hosting and have a clunky old site which I am going to replace with a new wp site. I don't want to use wampserver or any local development setup I am going to do it on the webserver but afaict I don't have the ability (without paying(which is always an option)) to create a subdomain. The stackstaging/temporary url doesn't appear to be what's needed at all so I have a spare unused domain name and I have installed wordpress and am beginning to get things set up. Two probs: I should keep google out shouldn't I ? to avoid having a half built site with duplicate content being crawled? I wouldn't have a problem with inserting a robots text meta thin…

I've updated a clients' site, and some employees are seeing the new site, and some are still seeing the old site at the same domain. I've had them clear their browser cache and they are still seeing the old site. The only thing I think may be causing this, is that the DNS has 3 A Records. I updated the @, and the A Record, to the new host (they were previously pointing to the host Weebly). The third A Record was called "Citrix" and the DNS points to DQE, a internet service provider. Not sure what that was for, I kept it the same. So, I'm not sure why some are still seeing the old site after clearing their browser cache. Could this third A Record have something …

Hi all, I'm planning on getting a new VPS set up with my current host, my current set up is a Windows server based VPS, this is because when the VPS was created a couple of years ago my Fiancee's website was written in asp.net and was very slow, around 18 months ago I rewrote it in PHP and the at the moment only the admin side is in asp.net, and I'm currently completely rewriting the website from scratch, including the admin side. The plan for the future is to launch the new version of my fiancee's website on a Linux based VPS, but I'm looking for opinions on the best set up to use. The website averages at 40k-50k unique visitors per month, but sometimes ev…

  6. Hi there! First of all, sorry If I am posting on the wrong forum, mods feel free to move the post if necessary. I started a personal blog on WordPress on January 2017. The site is http://psiqueduelo.com. The site is mainly designed to write articles. That's all I do, I write blog´s post and that's it. I say this because the hosting provider asked me what was the purpose of the web. At this time, I have like 25 posts and a metric of 170 - 270 daily visitors. The thing is this morning my site got suspended for excessive consumption of resources that heavily affect the hosting provider. (That's what they told me via ticket). The hosting provider told me my site could …

I have a classic Google Site w/o a G Suite subscription. Last week, I conducted a blacklist check on the site domain name and found that the site IP address is on Spamhaus ZEN blacklist. Spamhaus wants Google to contact them to have the IP address removed from their list. It appears that this IP address is shared by thousands of other sites. I have a business email address which shares the domain name which is hosted by Zoho.com. Will having the site IP address listed on Spamhaus negatively affect email campaigns? I would like to discuss this issue with Google, however, I don't have access to their support. Thanks.

  8. Checking my logs during the past few months there has been a very noticeable increase in the number of visitors to my website who attempt to access "/wp-login.php". These visitors usually come out of the blue without having visited any pages before this. Now, I don't use WordPress (I assume that is what the wp part means), and don't have any log-in page at all on my site, so they all receive a 404 error and go away. No harm done. But what is the reason for it all? Has accessing "/wp-login.php" become a favourite method of attack? And what if I did have a /wp-login.php page? Thanks for any insight. ... Martin

  9. Hi, I hope you will be able to answer my question and sorry if it doesn't fit this category in the forum. I am a web developer. However, sadly, I have been made redundant from my previous workplace after around 18 months of work. I'm struggling to find work for the last 5 months. During that time I was working primarily on some private projects. Now I am a little worried. If I find a job in web development will it be possible for my new employer to assess my web development knowledge in some X areas and provide this data to my previous employer? Will it be possible for previous employer to sue me for poor knowledge on X technologies on that basis or on any other s…

  10. When I was asked to upload my folder of my website to the server, they asked me to include all my css, js, img folders in my html folder, but I don't see why this would work as on my homepage html it would give a relative path to everything that it needed. Say "../css/style.css" but for some reason it would still work even if the folder structure was like the above. Now out of nowhere when editing my stylesheet locally, the stylesheet and everything else doesn't work, the page started to actually realize it wasn't in the correct position, which is right. But I wonder, why is it that it wouldn't work on the server when the files were correctly placed relatively to …

  11. Hello, Newby here. I have been using the W3C Mobile OK checker at https://www.w3.org/Mobile/ to try to make improvements in my rather cludgey old website at https://ve3oat.ca The Mobile OK checker always reports that "The certificate is invalid", a Severe failing, referring to my SSL/TLS certificate. The site "explains" that "This usually means that the certificate could not be retrieved or that the cryptographic algorithm used for the key exchange is not widely supported". And yet, the certificate is from Geotrust and no one I know has had any problem accessing my site with their mobile device (neither have I). Further, when I check the certificate at any of…

I don't want to lose all the historic email records (inbox and sent) when I do the transfer and would be glad of some casual advice. I've been hosting a few webdesign customers, getting along alright the past years. But now I'm calling the quits as it's not paying. My customers never understood, why they always struggle with certificate errors in their email software, even so I explained to them a dozen times that they have to pay for valid certs, otherwise there's nothing that I can do about it. I cannot just "hack" or "fix" this. They didn't understand, technically. I don't know why. Now I want to migrate them to a nice managed hosting I found, where people are really manag…

Their site requires large browser uploads and used to be housed on a shared Ubuntu environment with no issues (Duel Core, 2GB RAM). I was doing some www vs non-www research and I found the following information: "we strongly recommend using “www.example.com”, not “example.com”. Doing so will avoid potential problems in the future. The exact details are pretty technical, but DNS changes, for example, have far more flexibility if you include an extra level. It allows you to make changes to how your Web site is handled without worrying that the same “example.com” DNS change will affect something else like e-mail. In particular, using “www.example.com” allows you to change to either a CNAME record or an A…

Mod_security is a popular Apache plugin that serves as a Web Application Firewall, screening requests coming in to the webserver based on a set of configurable rules. However, I want to share the rules below, which are a good basic set to use on a web server to enhance security. You should copy the entire text of these rules (or whichever rules you would like to activate) into your modsec2.user.conf configuration file, or the configuration file yo…

But what about a large, or unknown size user base where you offered every user, let's say... between 5GB and 10GB of space, what are your options then? Seems I've been paying to "protect" myself and hindered myself from moving the domain away from the current registrar. Is there a way to unlock a domain via the actual email a domain is registered with rather than the "private" one? Or does the "private" one completely replace the data of the actual one? If I were to redesign a pre-existing site, would it be possible to transfer the hosting (and only the hosting) over to my provider and still keep the domain registration, email accounts ect. with the original providers? From my understanding of things, I should be able to change the nameservers of the original site to point to my hosts. Then I could set up an addon domain for that url and it will direct there. This would then allow me full access to the new site designed and hosted by me, but would leave the client with the same domain n…

Their stance is it's not always necessary to have it enabled and sites can function perfectly without. Though it's a valid answer, I'm just wondering whether I should pay so much attentio…
