I would like to know which e-commece platforms are ideal for designers? I have experience in CSS and HTML and would like to add some basic JQuery to the site.

 

I would like to have as much control as possible over the design of the site. Ideally i would like to make a responsive site using Dreamweaver CS5 and just use the platform for the cart etc.

I depends what sort of cart system you want, there are literally 100's of dedicated cart systems around, plus ecommerce addons for various Content management Systems.

 

What sort of cart features are you looking for?

hmmm... i don't think i could give you a decent answer to that!

 

What are the options and what are their differences?

 

I guess i'm looking for something that that will process card payments - visa, mastercard etc and paypal. Something where i can customise all the pages to keep it in theme with the site. I want to design the site on Dreamweaver from scratch and then add the cart features - not sure if that helps or not!

 

What are the best all rounders in your opinion?

From my own personal experience, Magento is the best flexible platform to design eCommerce website or store.

For my own personal experience and what we have found, I like Opencart - it's not everyones cup of tea but we love it. Works well for our print store.

I would recommend to use magento as per my own experience.Magento is great and user friend.. you can hire certified magento developers from company like commercepundit(.)com

I am not sure if Magento is very user friendly for inexperienced webmasters - people with brick and mortar shops who want to go online quickly without spending a lot of money for proffesional e-commerce store. Maybe I am leaning a bit toward OpenCart here.

However Magento has so many customization options, you can make a very custom and very large store out of it. But it is also more resource - hungry.

Magento is a great shopping cart, and can be used for all sizes of business. Rather than starting out with a platform which you eventually have to move away from as your needs grow, Magento can grow with you and also has a large selection of plugins.

Magento is best and flexible Ecommerce platform. Magento provide many features and facilities to build successful store and stay ahead of all.

I prefer Magento for e-commerce projects because it has richest Banckend Management, this framework is highly stable and flexible against growing online stores. Magento community provides lots of plugins/extensions to acheive crucial requirements of an e-commerce business.

You can use Bigcommerce as it does offer access to all the areas you would need.

HTML/CSS and Javascript can be used to change the design to whatever you'd want.

The templates are easy to work on and intuitive. It is best to look also for the forum,
where you can get a ton of info about what and where to change.

For any designer who knows his way through HTML/CSS, Inspect Tool of Chrome, Notepad++ and WinGrep
it is an easy cake.

I'll try to give an objective answer, as I'm myself a web designer and front-end developer. No PHP experience at all!

I've used OpenCart and WooCommerce before. Here's my brief takeaway:

 

Opencart

• Not so intuitive admin interface. I still have difficulties finding out where things are in the admin. Although they improved it a lot with some of the recent new admin updates.
• Not very easy to change design and theme code. My experience with OpenCart theme editing is very brief. But I had difficulties editing the theme.
• Works better if you have lots of products

WooCommerce

• Very intuitive and easy admin interface.
• No PHP skills needed to do theme editing. What I usually do is take a theme that fits well enough my design and make changes based on the theme. See what I did with the Flatsome theme. From this (the original theme) to this (my store)

If you have former experience with Wordpress, choosing WooCommerce is a no-brainer in my opinion. You'd be able to modify your theme quite easily with HTML/CSS and js changes.

I prefer to Magento, It has great features and facilities to build successful store and flexible to growing online stores.

There are large number of platforms that can be used to create an e-commerce website. Below is the list of some most user friendly e-commerce platforms, which can be easily customized without any need of development knowledge:

1. Shopify
2. Magento
3. Woocommerce
4. Bigcommerce
5. 3dcart
6. Webs

I suggest you to try all these and choose one which suites you the best.

I would best advice woocommerce as it simple and easy to customize the way you need it. We have done complex modifications to it to even adopt high number of products.
