Why isn't this site getting more hits?

Featured Replies

I'll start by saying this site was redesigned and that the previous version (a Flash site) was also very bad in the hit compartment.

I've had the redesign active for about 2 weeks and apart from the second day when it got 55 hits it has been getting hardly any (less than 20, usually even less than 10).

I've added suitable alt attributes anywhere I can and registered with Google. What else can I do to the site itself as the web designer (I was hired by a client)?

Do I just need to be patient? Are meta worth adding?

For one, you wouldn't expect a "lot" of hits for a freelance portfolio. One thing I can see is you don't have any text on the homepage, its like a landing page. which is not good for SEO.

You need to get backlinks from various sites etc

I agree, you shouldn't and don't need many hits on a website like that. The priority is quality of users (assuming the client wants to get work out of the site). If you're not already I'd suggest buying some online ads.

Don't fall into the trap of the numbers game :)

Freelancer sites rarely get high volumes of visitors unless they have a very high profile, and even then it's usually a blog post that brings people in.

Question: why have you put the site navigation at the bottom of the page? If someone enters on say the portfolio page they won't be able to navigate, and most people won't bother scrolling all the way down.

Main thing that slapped me the face is that currently, there's no point at all in your homepage and your homepage has nothing one it.

Agreed.

No offence intended here but although it all looks pretty, its quite badly designed and laid out.

I think the design is good! But I have to agree that layout will not grab people attention when they land on your homepage. I would suggest a mixture of the about us and your portfolio on your homepage. If a visitor see's no content on your homepage, they are likely to click off straight away. I would look at analytics and see how high your bounce rate is.

Also having no content on your homepage is really bad for SEO. I'm sorry if I sound negative, but if you make these changes it should make a big difference.

On the plus, I have had a look through your portfolio and you seem to be really good at design!

I totally it seems like totally a landing page.

But this can be better improved.BY focusing more on content and design.

I wonder if the OP thinks the 'hits' have picked up now we are looking at it? :yahoo:

Funny that, i look at mine and I see the links go up, then i realise that i have been on it editing ha ha

I had a client with a very similar webpage it had no content on the index page after adding some content his site has jumped to the first position for his main keyword.

Also I went into see your page source and there is no html meta tags in your head section at all.

Try to add at least these three meta tags

<meta title

<meta description

<meta keywords

Hope this one help

No doubt landing page design play a vital role in conversion rate. One very important fact is how much competition do you have and your designs as compare to competitor's design and your offers as compare to competitor's offer

To be fair, that page wouldn't even do well as a landing page.

Not without any content it won't! Get some content on the page! good.gifAnd then, to get anywhere near the top 3 pages, you're going to need a whole lot more content & links.

Regarding traffic - have you checked out the Google KW tool and looked at their estimated monthly traffic levels against competition? To get an idea this might be worth doing. Just bear in mind that it is only estimated and taken on an average over 12 months so seasonal market changes aren't accounted for.

Hope that helps!

@SEODave

your website is like a word in a dictionary.

people will not find it unless they stumble on it by accident or know what they are looking for.

agree with Dave, start a blog or write some content if you want traffic to your site

you have a very decent portfolio but you gotta sell yourself a bit harder, being popular on the internet isn't as simple a fancy designs unfortunately :)

As far as SEO is concerned, every page should have a relevant quality content... your homepage is nothing but links to your subpages, I therefore, think that you should have to put a little description in it, so search engines can able to read your page, thus, get good search engine rankings.

are you saying we have problem with *hits on this site?

Hi

all good points below.

Find out what keywords will work for you - do a bit of googling on beginners SEO and start there.

Try starting local - make sure you are listed in 'google local' and then figure out what people are searching for in respect of your services.

then either:

Buy adverts

Or create free links

Buying adverts can work, but it looks like you are very competitively priced, so you'd have to make sure you had a great conversion rate.

I'd start by writing interesting artciles and submitting them to directories - with keywords such as 'graphic design northern Ireland' or 'graphic design donegal' - crate really interesting articles, and write 1 a week.

Then get in touch with your old contacts at all of the papers you're mentioned on your site (Ulster Herald, Strabane Chronicle, Fermanagh Herald, Tyrone Herald, Donegal News and Gaelic Life) - create a great story and ask them to publish it online, and in the paper - I'm thinking along the lines of 'local firm bucks trend by innovative advertising', and your face, your site in there.

Content plays a very significant role in SEO. If your website lacks of content it will face an adverse effect in google results. Also, you need to contentrate on web promotion techniques to get more visitors to your website, make sure you build backlinks from various sources so that the number of unique visitors will increase.

Do on-page and off-page optimization to get more visits.

genius.

In today's online world, your website does not mean anything to anyone unless it can be found by your customers. Optimizing your site so it appears high in the search engines seems to be as much as an art form, as it is a science. The act of altering a web site so that it does well in the organic, crawler-based listings of search engines.

Search engines use programs called spiders or crawlers that visit the pages of your Web site and index the information on those pages. This includes the content that your visitors see when viewing your page and some of code used to build your page.

haha...who, if you google, will see nabbed it from a load of places. Actually I could be fibbing and they truly are an SEO genius and started it all? ;)

'adelaustin' the genius

and its actually quite shocking how many seo companys are using that paragraph!

Taken from the above website (link now removed)

"You should be aware that many offshore companies based in Asia and Eastern Europe are offering cheap sub-standard work to students. Although their prices will appear attractive - these low quality providers should be avoided."

Oh the irony...

and you wonder why the country is in a mess when students pay for someone else to do an essay for them? And they bemoan they can't afford tuition fees?!

I also have the same view. You home page is doesn't have any content. Its looking like a simple advertising site.Contents are required for getting the faith from the visitors. This type of designs will not be helpful for getting hits. You can try the SEO methods for getting traffic.

To my mind your site looks slick and clean.

So, you are complaining about getting no traffic (you say hits but I think you mean visitors).

Ok, to be honest, I wonder that you get some traffic at all.

Where does the traffic come from? Google? If yes, which keywords?

If these keywords are not graphic, website design or any kind of design related then

its very obvious why you dont get any conversions.

What you have to do first is:

1. You have to know who your target audience is!

For that simply go the free Adwords tool and type in your main keywords

so you get a feeling which keywords bring how much traffic plus you will see

a lot of other suggestions: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

2. I urge you NOT to concentrate on the big keywords like "web design". These are

too difficult to optimize (or too expensive if you want Adwords ads) AND they do

convert much worse!

Concentrate on long tail keywords like "affordable web design" or "webdesign + your city"

After that you can do SEO and build backlinks. Step by step you will (hopefully) climb up

and get some TARGETED traffic which could lead to much better conversions.
