Totally agree here, also the other business is actually called 'Sky High Trampoline Park' and the other is called 'Urban Jump Ltd', and i'm not talking just domain, it's the business name. Second point to note is the same search term brings back just Sky High as a business result, unlike say 'Martial Arts Classes Sussex' which brings back 3 map results of different businesses. This says to me Google might just be relating the search term to an actual business request, hence the home and 2 sub pages for Sky High on that search term.
 

It's probably a minor thing Google likes on one and not the other. It could just be down to the domain name or a single good inbound link
 
However, I've just googled: trampoline park sussex and they both rank on page 1. A few tweaks to urbanjump and it could outrank the other. Fixing the truly awful code would be a good start - fixing this would tick a number of Google's boxes.

Got to disagree with you on that one. Although internal linking is important as it allows Google to find information easier and providing the pages contain plenty of well written content it will help your ranking within Google.
 
However citations in their very definition are basically references that support your content. If your supporting your content with your own pages this has very little meaning. Whereas if you have a number of websites using your website as a reference then it tells Google hey this website knows what it is talking about. It means even more if the website in question that is using you as a reference in turn has a certain level of authority. Certain websites such as Universities, government sites, and those super huge brand names will always have the highest level of authority.

For example if someone types in 'web design' into a search engine then there are so many websites that cover this topic with quality content that it will be the site with the most reputation that is ranked the highest. Unique content is important, but I think when people talk about the best way to achieve the best results for a website people shouldn't suggest just one thing such as content as it really depends on your website and it's target audience.

Personally I am not taken by the main image. I think a picture of something similar in that space and an actual picture of yourself would look a lot more professional and personal. I am not really blown away by the logo either. Everything else from a design perspective looks good though.

I guess because backlinks have been fairly easy for me to gain in my line of business that my main focus has been to drive traffic to my homepage and my members pages. However even though I have this advantage doesn't mean I should not have a blog as this would help drive more traffic to my site. I guess just because more reputable sites gain higher levels of traffic for each article they write, doesn't mean there is not enough to go around

My point was that you don't need backlinks. You can easily rank well for a whole range of keywords without doing any link building. It is hard work but once you get established as a useful source Google will return more often to see what you have published. I've got articles from 10 years ago that still rank highly despite a lot of big names all posting on the same topic.

Aha you're using script method, I generally prefer the itemscope itemprop method as 9/10 the content is in the source and only requires a little work to markup. Will send you a message with examples.

This simply says the content in this block is a local business, you can also define which business is yours and which are listings, I genreally use contentprovider copyright to the website owner and other uses for the local business on listings, but it depends how you have set the page, e.g. is it defined as /WebPage or /SearchResultsPage.
 
 
It can do but be careful, things Google considers for displaying with your search result can backfire if they think you're dishonest.

Bang on here, topic and location relationship I would consider as high, if not higher than unrelated high PA / DA links. So if you sold home improvement products then links from a hair salon would be pretty worthless, even if it had a high DA. However get a link from a DIY guide who has a demo of how to use a particular branded product you stock from their guide page to your product page, now that's gold.
 
Edit: Forgot to say links are more than just passing authority, referrals play a key part and in the DIY example the person watching the guide of how to install is more likely to buy the branded good, double whammy.

PA (Page Authority) and DA (Domain authority), show the amount and quality of the websites linking to your website. Simply put, the more high quality websites linking to your site the more value and trust Google place on your website and will rank you higher in the search engine.
 
Obviously it is very difficult to achieve, because you cannot physically do this yourself. All you can do is influence others to do so.
 
Another point to make, is that you will get much more value from websites whose content is related to your own!

You certainly have to be careful. However I have to point out to those above that content alone will do very little unless people get there to read it first!
 
Advertising is only natural as long as you go through the right sources. For example smashingmagazine who are a very well known in our industry sell banner advertisements, and they are among many reputable sources that do. Although these are nofollow and only temporary they will get people there to read your content as will social media. Then you have a small chance of gaining the odd natural backlink depending on how good content is, or more importantly how useful the information or service that you provide to those people.
 
Make sure whoever you use hit your target audience by going through content related websites.

Getting off LSI, and back to backlinks as per the original thread. My train of thought is that Google like to encourage natural backlinks. So if this is the case then surely the most natural backlinks are those which are industry/topic related websites?
 
The reason I mention this is because I see that people say that all you need to do is build great content. However building natural backlinks is different depending on what type of website/business you have. For example if you are a web design magazine you have thousands of web designers wanting to reference to you most of which use a normal type of link. However if you are the web designer, these magazines, high end blogs, forums, social networking site etc use a nofollow link. And unlike the magazines no matter how good your content is you are unlikley to get a backlink from a competitor.
 
This means many web designers use backlinks from clients, which of course are non topic related and therefore unnatural and do more damage than good.
 
The point I am getting to is that writing great content is good, but some sites are unlikely to gain great natural backlinks.
 
This means for these people, my suggestion would be to carry on promoting the site as per normal, but don't expect high levels of backlinks. However you can still gain high levels of traffic by writing lots of different and unique content you think your clients may be asking. This means that you will be found on Google for lots of different topics increasing traffic to your website instead of being found for those few big search terms.
