When I was a teenager I was half decent at coding html but because of my age I was never able to get work. So I vowed to help people in that situation whenever I got work. Now I've got work I'd like to do it, so I've been thinking of ways to help. I've decided I'd like to act as an agency where I'd directly connect businesses to young developers. The type of work would be odd bits of freelance work they could do at the weekend or evenings. This would benefit the company because: They wouldn't need to spend time/ resources finding a developer Since the type of work would be mostly front-end the cost would be low And it would benefit the young developer because: They would have a connection that could lead to full-time work They would be fast tracked to companies who won't discriminate them because of their age They would have something decent to put on their CV My company and myself have connections from startups to global brands. My colleagues are also very well connected and are up for helping. What I'm looking for here is some feedback and, if you're a developer in London, people to help us out. Hey, I'm nearing completion of Bublie so I'm releasing it for closed beta testing. Bublie is essentially a pinboard, but unlike Pinterest it supports all kinds of content - not just images. Thought I'd drop by and say hi! 6 months ago I was employed by an awesome company in London as a web developer. I'm pretty lucky since I don't have a degree in anything! I know there are a lot of young people who are in the situation I was so I thought it'd be nice to give some advise if anyone needs it. So I think this will help: Keep proving your skills If you're not getting any interviews keep redoing your portfolio, using a range of different technologies. Even if you're not a web designer try to make your work visually pleasing because it's what recruitment agencies first notice - that was one of the biggest keys I had. What a web developer should know This doesn't of course apply to all companies, but many will be looking for skills in: Photoshop Enough to be able to work with creative to turn into websites HTML+CSS Programming alone isn't useful without knowing HTML properly. Knowledge of HTML5 is a definite must since it shows you're ahead of the curve. A programming language In my case; PHP and Javascript. Almost every company I interviewed at asked if I had experience with the Facebook and Twitter API, so make sure you get to grips with those. Many of them also use frameworks and Codeigniter seems to be the most popular. I also advise having a list of things you'd like to learn because it'll show how enthusiastic you are. Web developers aren't expected to know everything after all. Show logical thinking when planning and carrying out projects This was one of the hardest questions I had: which procedures do you prefer when building a website. Without being in the business, how do you know? At my company a wireframe is drawn up which shows the user flow. The wireframe is then interpreted by the web designer/ graphic designer. The web developer then cuts the PSD file up and builds the website. If the website is especially complicated then we usually hold a brainstorming meeting to help plan the back-end construction. When the website is completed, or near complete, it's tested for bugs and has copy checked and changed if needed. There are lots of other things that will help you get a job, but I found that these are the most important.

I'm both a designer and developer. I got a pretty good job in London a few months ago as a designer, now I'm having to leave, but got a better job in London as a developer. We were all made redundant and the other designer (who can't develop) hasn't been able to find a new job and he's having to learn to develop. I don't think it's fair to say developers can't design and designers can't develop. It is possible and you'll be much more valuable having a range of skills.

This is my latest project. It's essentially a chat room system with the rooms ordered similarly to forums. I made it just for fun and I doubt there's a real need for it, but I'll be making it open source once I finished. I got the idea from Convore.com. I didn't like the laggy scrolling or tiny chat viewport so I decided if I could do better. The site for Nattr is Nattr.org. The site for playing with Nattr is Chat.Nattr.org.

Piracy is most likely not killing the music industry. What's killing the industry is: Poor quality, made-to-sell music The industry's inability to remodel their businesses for the download market [*]Spotify pretty much solved the issue of piracy, the American music industry rejected it Another thing, artists don't make much money from record sales, but mostly from live events. If you want to support your artist - go see them! (or stop listening to crappy American rubbish and start listening to awesome European dance music for free on SoundCloud).

I've always thought it was fishy that brands seem to get their websites to the top rank in such a short space of time. One that I noticed was very new Nike websites. Similarly Buzz.com (competitor to Google's Buzz (I think)) is below Google's Buzz. Last time I looked Buzz.com was on page 3, but they seem to have risen. Totally Google's right to artificially influence pagerank though.
