Well its quite basic. All you do to get links comes under the category of Off page. In link exchange you need to put someone else website link on your website and other person placing your links on his website.This provides a backlink. Do follow backlinks are main factors to get good PR.

Well directories are good not bad at all. But the thing everyone keep in mind is relevancy i mean related to your niche.They are really good for you as a source of Backlink.Its always better approach to get backlink from a good PR directory rather than tens of low prs.
