As far as SEO is concerned, every page should have a relevant quality content... your homepage is nothing but links to your subpages, I therefore, think that you should have to put a little description in it, so search engines can able to read your page, thus, get good search engine rankings.

It is normal, don't be frustrated about it... it is not you who made some mistake, it is just your competition doing better on their optimization. Just make sure you are consistently doing your optimization with full efforts.

For those who uses Black Hat SEO, they want a quick good search engine rankings, but what they don't know is that this rankings are for temporary only and might lead to penalties and bad reputations...
