I don't have a problem with normal clients understanding this. This link is more for those designers/developers new and old who need a little poke in the right direction when trying to price a site.

Totally. Just because i've had no bad experiences doesn't mean no one else hasn't either.
I know people who are happy using 1&1 for gods sake!

As some, all or none of you may know, I've made the decision to step down as a mod here, partly because I've launched a new site in association with a few other folks and should really dedicate my time to that.
 
Don't worry though, I'm leaving you in good hands: Andy, Helen and Rob are familiar faces around here and they've been tapped on both shoulders with Ben's ceremonial banhammer. They'll take good care of you.
 
I'm not quitting WDF entirely; I'll still look in from time to time but obviously I won't be able to spend so much time here.

I'm considering quitting HTML email building. I just finished a marathon 3 day long build of the most complicated email you've ever seen.
I won't mention the company but let's just say even I thought they we're mad. It left me with a nervous twitch.

This can happen with any CMS as the themes are built around the current hooks implemented by the developers. You're unlikely to find a CMS that this doesn't happen with.
 
 
Again, this is usual with most CMS that if you keep it up to date it will remain pretty secure. All the current CMS creators out there have documents on their sites about how best to be extra careful with security, so it's best to read these and follow them carefully
 
 
By it's very nature, a CMS should be easy to use as it's a consumer facing product. Any CMS that is hard to use is counter-intuitive of it's reason for being built in the first place. A CMS is primarily for the not so developer friendly to be able to update and maintain content on a website. Any CMS that makes this difficult has already failed in its main task.
 
My personal favorite is WordPress. It has a good combination of being easy to use, secure and generally updates don;t cause to much of an issue to themes as they tend to work a lot of backwards compatibility in on each release (much to my annoyance).
WordPress has recently released version 3.5 that included major work to the whole media management area and i've yet to see it break any of my themes and it was quite a major update. There's always time though

£200 gets you around 5 hours of my time. Those 5 hours will be spent doing the best i damn well can using the training and knowledge i have spent a lot of valuable time and money gaining.
 
Web design is a profession and should be respected as much.

Never ever do anything without a signed contract and deposit.
 
Make sure that from now on this is all in your contract.

If you've got access to an iOS device and the Internet quickly download PHP+ . It's a PHP training book plus the full PHP manual in an app and is currently 69p.
 
Once you've grabbed it you won't have to connect to the net again.

For the site, it looks good but it doesn't convey what you're trying to do with the site at all, no call to action, nothing.
In fact I'd go as far as saying it looks like you're trying to sell movie memorabilia.
 
Use the tag line of the site and the space under the main navigation to really shout about what you're trying to do.
 
Layout. main banner breaks out of site on iPad.
Get a footer in the, currently you can't tell whether the page is loading more things or at the bottom.
Make sure your grid lines up. Currently there are red buttons at alternating heights and it's distracting.
 
Adverts. As you've said already, traditional and Google type ads just won't cut it on this site and will ruin the clean appearance. Your idea about paid for featured posters in the banner is great, stick with it. Also listen to jamesosix when he mentions affiliates.
Hook up with a few decent services and you could rake it in. Imagine a 'watch on Netflix' link, or a 'buy on Amazon' link. Maybe even offer the facility for search local cinemas to book tickets or 'buy this poster on blah blah blah' link.
These called all be laid out nicely and not affect the layout (in fact they could be an asset to the layout) and would make more money than Google ads.
 
All in all it's a nice looking site with the potential to make a few quid so long as you I've it a little polish. Well done mate.

Well this user Adam Godsall has got himself in a right pickle. He was sniffed out as spouting crap, any surprise really considering we're a community of professionals for gods sake! Turns out the theme was a WP theme all along and the SEO was generated by a machine OK cool, at this point you'd own up, admit defeat, change your ways possibly? Nah, who am i kidding, what you would do is start a fresh account on WDF and send over a fake report as so...
 
 
But obviously you wouldn't do that... nah, because being a professional in your field, you'd know that forum posts can be traced to IP's (which in this case match) and that all your details are on the WHOIS (which also match).
