Hello all, I'm seriously hanging my nose over a 24" iMac at the moment but would like some advice from anybody that's already got one. My budget will just about stretch to the 24" version. However, having used a pc/windows laptop all my life, I would also need to buy mac versions of Dreamweaver and Fireworks (an extra £700!!). Can anybody recommend any alternatives? I use DW at the moment in Code View, so am competent at hand-coding sites. I'll buy Fireworks if I have to, with it being the cheaper of the two. Can you hand-code using the iWeb software that ships with the mac? The 24" screen is really non-negotiable, I know that the 20" screen is cheaper, but I like the space of the 24" having compared to two for about 7 hours in PC World the other day. TIA.

Hi ThomasHardy, The one thing that I would mention is:- please, please make sure that you're using the correct grammar before the site goes live (i.e. the difference between there, their and they're, your and you're etc).....it's one of my pet hates. I'd hate to see a really nice site ruined by poor grammar. Cheers, Lee

Hi trwb. I tend to agree, I've shortened the header slightly now to 250px in height. It's uploaded now. Thanks for your interest and advice.

Thomas, Thanks for that. I've settled on the navigation styling now. The rollover is now a brown colour rather than dark green. The brown reflects the tree trunk colour that's in the logo and, I hope, helps to keep the theme going throughout the site. There is a problem with it in IE6 in that the nav bar doesn't extend across the full width of the page, but I'll get to that tonight. Also, the rollover for the Contact link doesn't fill to the right hand edge in any browser, but I'm sure that I'll figure it out. All in all I'm quite pleased with it so far:- it's my first real attempt and it the first bit of paid freelance work that i've undertaken. Thanks again.

Hi Dan, Dizi's comments may be harsh, but are entirely fair and completely justified. I see from your info that you are a beginner and are learning web design. Please, please, please take Dizi's comments on-board and use the advice and suggestions before showing the site to your client. As to your question about what to charge your client for your work:- personally, I get the clients user requirements down in full before starting any work, send them a quote and, if they agree upon it, send them a contract to sign and return. That way both you and your client are covered for the work you produce and know where you both stand. Read the information contained within the sites that Dizi has posted, digest it and learn from it. In addition, there are always members on this forum willing to help and give honest advice (as you've already seen). Good luck with it.

When you say to make the header less deep, do you mean that it comes too far down the page (please excuse my ignorance)?? If that's the case, then yes, I tend to agree - it does take up all the room on a 800 x 600 res. I've taken the border off of the nav bar and it does look better, thanks for that. I'll post it up again later on. I'm tinkering with it today. Thanks for your advice, it's really appreciated.

Hi fubar, I'm not an expert in CSS (not yet anyway), but here goes.... I don't think you need to have the float in your #navcontainer ul li a style as your are correctly displaying the li elements inline (so that they line up horizontally and not vertically). You might need to add a display:block to your a elements within the ul li to make the hover work correctly. In fact (and I'm guilty of this too), the ul doesn't need to be contained within a div as it's a block level element anyway, you can just use the navlist id that you've given to the ul to reference it and it's sub-elements within the css. Another little tip, try not to use tables for layout, it's not good practice. Other and more knowledgeable members on here may prove me wrong. HTH.

The Zen Garden site is what made me want to learn CSS. It's a great site, a great concept and a fabulous showcase for the amazing things that can be done with pure CSS. The book is a good read and sits on my book shelf in a prominent position under "Inspiration".

Hey ho, Thought I'd add my two-penneth. I'm working as a C# developer for the police in Nottingham. Just spent the best part of 3 whole days trying to get an AJAX ModalPopupExtender to work properly within a UserControl nested in a main page - finally cracked it this morning! Yay!

Hey Michael, There's no better way to learn than by doing, in my opinion. I'm a C# developer during the day and a freelance web designer by night (just starting out). I'm completely self taught, no formal qualifications, MCSA's or anything like that. The most important resources that I've found are the Forums such as this one (I've only been reigstered a couple of days, but already have found this to be one of the best forums there is for web design) and the Internet as a whole. I find that I learn best when I've got an actual project to get my teeth into. I have a lot of weak points, but through trial and error and research, I hope to get better and if I can pass on anything that I've learned along the way to others, then I'll be so the much happier for it. Hello to all - I hope everyone's creative juices are flowing nicely. My current project has a navigation bar that I'm just not happy with at all. http://www.hjssolutions.com/sites/orchard. How do you ladies and gents come up with good, eye-pleasing and functional navigation elements? I've installed a copy of SiteXpert7 (from the cover disc from this months .net magazine), but the code it generates includes tables which I'd like to avoid for compliancy. Any tips would be welcomed. TIA.

I've found CSS - The Definitive Guide from Eric Meyer to be an excellent book.
