April 10, 200818 yr Hi everyone, I just got curious over what everyone's studying. Not sure if there has already been a discussion on who's studying what or working as <insert profession here> but it would be interesting to see what degrees of specialities there are lingering here... I'm studying BSC Computer Science correspondence through UNISA while working at a SAP implementation company as a software minion doing little projects here and there that don't require the greatest of skills. I enjoy it though. I can't sit in lectures all day, I'd much rather work. Hope to hear from you guys Keep sane(ish?)! Cari.

April 10, 200818 yr I work as a web designer for a medium sided company (there's about 17 of us in total, including support, developers and designers etc) We work mainly on ecommerce sites, but as i'm new (about 5 months now I think) i've mainly just been coding other peoples designs into standard CMS sites. I'm learning lots about CSS and designing, and must have improved so much since starting.

Awesome... I'm a lazy bugger, I'm still in my first year and it's my third year doing it. Oh well... Slow and steady wins the race... April 10, 200818 yr Well I work 3 days a week part time for the BBC. Mainly staffing reconciliations ans recoveries,, but also some cost planning. And a few years back I took on our departments two intranet sites. Studied Web Design & Development post-grad Diploma last year and am now doing 8 modules in IT Apps for another diploma. Aim is to combine two diploma with a OU course I did years back and then find a decent Design course and claim a degree for all the credits. I've started working on freelance sites recently as well, now I find myself 7 days per week working!

April 10, 200818 yr My main occupation is tryin to earn a living So, I'm a part time freelance web designer, part time guitar teacher & part time singer/ guitarist/ pianist on the local wine bar/ pub circuit. The money's not great in any of these areas, mostly cos I can't get enough work in any of them at the mo, but it's not for the want of trying. Besides, I'm very new to web design. April 10, 200818 yr Aye, I should be ok in the first year, but the second and third (when the work kicks in) will be mighty interesting for freelancing on the side. I might find I'll need to temporarily turn down work for a few months around exams / big projects.

April 10, 200818 yr Education: English degree (useless! j/k). I'd love to go back to school and just keep going and going and going... Work: Currently doing 40hrs/wk as Content Manager for a health & beauty community website. It's mostly writing with some SEO and web stuff. I also have side projects (20hrs/wk-ish) doing SEO, freelance writing and web design. But it's all contractual and work-from-home, so that makes me a full-time freelancer.

That's the absolute reverse of my life. Loved studying, did really well at school, went to uni (for a bit) and then had a miserable (lack of a) career, not been anywhere, and not become a real web designer (one that gets paid) yet. What's your secret?

I studied at the Arts Institute for three years. Great place. Fun people. Amazing beach. I studied BA (Hons) Modelmaking for Design and Media. Worked freelance in London for a year afterwards, started as modelmaking then got an offer to do a website, as I've had it as a hobby, which lead me to another job and then another. Then I moved back to Trondheim to start my own webdesign company, but I got a nice job offer as modelmaker at an architechtural office. (hye, it's always nice to make use of your education ) So webdesign is back at being a hobby for me again.

I've got relatives down there, so I've been to area (mainly the beach) many times when I was younger. I'm really looking forward to starting now, as I had an experience day the other week and the people were all so nice. Was the nightlife any good!

Unless you are very keen on surfing or have family/ frineds already in Cornwall, take a look at the rest of the westcountry. I'm not saying Cornwall isn't beautiful, it's just popular! Take a look at N Devon and Somerset - it's beautiful here, too Shedding of corporate shackles is a must though!

April 14, 200818 yr Frankly anything south of Taunton will do me quite nicely. I love Cornwall but would rate Devon and Somerset just as highly. Plus Cornwall is a way away from the rest of my family to discourage day trips @ Rob, there's a shop / cafe on the main drag in Lyme Regis that sells really cool nick knacks (handbags, shoes, posters, cuff links, high-class tourist tat basically) and overlooks the sea..divine! If I had the money I'd buy it.

April 17, 200818 yr It always impresses me seeing pro-active students with a goal early on in life, good on you! ... man, when i was in uni i was too busy p!ssing around on the playstation and getting drunk! After a few years of dossing and thinking what the hell am i supposed to do with my life, i stumbled into websites and realised its actually something i might enjoy! So fast forward to today, im a web producer for a gambling website looking to perhaps move on in this field and learn more, albeit very slowly! Great to see a good mix of people here
