Hi can people please give there opinions on the website that i am doing (near completing) There are one or two things that have yet to be sorted (i.e the links will be images and the menu link will eventually have something).

But aside from this, what do people think?

I think JavaScript is the last of your worries to be honest...although the coding for what you have done is neat, you have no <html> tag you have no Doctype, you haven't closed your body at the end...there are so many little mistakes that you should really read up on before you even consider selling this to a client. As a web designer you have to ensure that your site is coded to the highest of standard and can be accessible to the most people. It looks like you have designed this to look good on your screen resolution and not thought of the most common size (1024*768), so you also need to learn to design with others in mind and not just those that use your screen resolution.

 

I suggest you have a look at:

and learn how to code sites correctly and to meet w3c standards.

Dizi's comments may be harsh, but are entirely fair and completely justified.

I see from your info that you are a beginner and are learning web design. Please, please, please take Dizi's comments on-board and use the advice and suggestions before showing the site to your client.

 

As to your question about what to charge your client for your work:- personally, I get the clients user requirements down in full before starting any work, send them a quote and, if they agree upon it, send them a contract to sign and return. That way both you and your client are covered for the work you produce and know where you both stand.

 

Read the information contained within the sites that Dizi has posted, digest it and learn from it. In addition, there are always members on this forum willing to help and give honest advice (as you've already seen).

Yup, what I said wasn't meant to be nasty, I just believe that its better to give an honest reflection of a site rather than sugar coat it and make you believe that what you are doing is fine. Its best to learn from mistakes and be told early on that you are making them to learn that further down the line.

 

 

As Lee Salter has also made a good point about how much to charge a client for the site. You should always come to an agreement on price before you start designing, as if you design it first you are at the clients will and may not get a fair price for it.

Thanks for the comments im not really too dissapointed, i did have a doc type there but deleted it for some reason somewhere along the line.

The only thing i am perhaps dissapointed about is the comment on the resolution, because i spent alot of time in resizing everything in photoshop which i thought would do the trick.

So i think most of the things you have mentioned are things that have slipped my mind but are no doubt important.

 

Also what about the design itself?

The dseign itself is really hard to appreciate at the moment because the site is too wide. I have to use the horizontal scroll bar just to read the content. From what I can see, I wonder if there's enough contrast in the header? The slate grey background is a little too dark for the text IMO. I would also consider giving your navigation links a hover state so that they are more obviously links, and maybe make them white, and definitely remove the underline. This will tidy it up considerably.

Other than that, once you have addressed the width of the site, I would strongly recommend putting the copy into 2 columns instead of having it in long lines across the site as at present. There's a reason that newspapers do this - it's much easier to read.

The idea of colums hadnt even crossed my mind, i guess that just goes to show my inexperience. The links that you mentioned are only temporary really as i plan to make them images.

Maybe it has been already said, but anyway:

First of all the page is too wide! Every page should display correctly with smaller resolutions too. As i see, this page is for advertising some eating place, but page which doesn't even fit on my screen just asks me to close it quickly.

Give some color to the links and change the font.

You are using too much bevel. Cut down on it.

Use more contrasted colors. More whit would be good.

In regards to using column's, would people advise that i do it all in the same box i have? or should i do a few text boxes for it?
