I'm after some help and recommendations please. I currently have a hosting reseller account as well as a domain reseller account. I have about 80 or so domains listed here and about 85 hosting accounts as it stands. Can you guys please recommend a company that could take over this as I'm on the hunt for a new provider.

 

If I was to transfer to another company I'm guessing each clients email set-up would need to change as well as changing each of the domains name servers? It's the first time I've had to change my reseller supplier so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

More than happy to chat to you about this as I understand it is not a small task. We use the same domain registrar you appear to be using and have lots of experience with migrations of this size (we just migrated a few 100 websites a few weekends again) so could assist you throughout the whole process.

 

I would suggest moving services in stages rather in one go to make sure you provide a smooth transition for your clients. You would first move over the domain names, then the email services and finally the websites and databases. Most of this could be automated.

Transferring all your hosting sites is straight forward and can all be done in 1 hit, leaving only the name servers to be updated.

You dont need to do anything with the transfer as everything comes across in 1 go, all cPanel accounts mailboxes, everything.

 

Our hosting is all cPanel on Cloud Linux, so you wont have any issues with the transfers..

 

We do it at a time to suit you, ideally late at night, then you switch the name servers over and your clients are none the wiser their website has moved :-)

 

Cost wise, we ONLY do "per-month" pricing. No asterix's, no catches or "only if you signup for X years in advance", just plain, simple 1 price, 1 plan, 1 frequency and you multiple your reseller plan as many times as needed :-)

The most important question here is why do you want to switch reseller providers? What's the issue with your existing provider? Other than that, your choice of new providers may also shaped by how much disk space and bandwidth you need, do you have an idea on existing figures for these?

 

The email configuration won't necessarily change, it depends on how your clients are currently connecting. If they're connecting to a hostname or IP address specific to your existing provider (e.g. servername.yourhost.com), they will need to update this. If they're connecting to a DNS entry for their domain (or your domain), e.g. mail.theirdomain.com, this should continue to work after pointing to your new host/server.

 

Are you currently running cPanel? It seems so, assuming you're using the same provider for your freelancing website. If so, you'll probably want your new provider to be running cPanel to make the transition much easier and of course to keep things the same for yourself and clients.

We're also now looking for a new reseller hosting provider.

 

We are with Heart Internet and have been for years, but their service levels recently have been shocking.

At the moment, we have had ongoing downtime with the large majority of our sites down entirely, or sporadically working for around 24 hrs now.

2.30pm yesterday it all went down (web hosting, email, DNS the lot) apparently because of a power issue. They are still struggling to get everything up and running almost 24 hrs later.

One of our sites just came up there... our monitoring software reported "The site came back up at 02/11/2016 11:33, and it was down for 21 hours." 21 hours!!!

We currently have around 50 website with Heart, and around 100 domains.

We host solely on Linux.

 

I tried out TSOhost last year, and really didn't like their control panel.

 

There was a host on here that offered a WHMCS licence in with their reseller fee which looked interesting, but I am struggling to find their name now.

 

Are there any other suggestions? Thanks in advanced!

Even 21 hours doesn't come close to 1% downtime, assuming Heart have an SLA That said most hosts will inevitably have a major outage at some point, and from experience I know it's not always easy to get things going again, tech being what it is. It's really down to how they handle things during and after the outage.

 

Clook offer ClientExec or WHCMS with reseller hosting, but a small charge per month - - they've only recently added reseller servers using SSD's - http://www.clook.net/packages/reseller-hosting/ - I've used them for over 12 years, you won't get a much better host either

Plenty of providers include a free WHMCS license (and similar offers), just remember the cost is built-in somewhere. Have a look through webhostingtalk.com, there are loads of hosts (many well recommended) offering free WHMCS license if that's definitely what you want.

Assume you mean the (now) infamous DDoS (read: power supply) issue that took some sites and servers down for days

 

That was the final nail in the coffin for me, although their day to day uptime performance can be poor.

 

A similar amount of downtime has happened before with them also (see https://www.heartinternet.uk/blog/we-messed-up-heres-what-happened-and-what-we-learned/ ). They apparently leaned nothing

 

Interesting read. I've been subscribed to their status page at http://www.heartstatus.uk/ for a few days now. The number of issues they have is insane.

 

Yep, they are fairly shocking at the moment. We're in the processes of moving websites away from them now.

 

I think they should rebrand to YoYo Internet, it seems much more fitting.

For DNS, I'd recommend to set up custom name servers (no fee) - once custom NS is in place, instead of amending hundreds of domains after a server switch, it only takes the updating of 2 IP records without any hassle to domain owners. For emails, it depends if mail users are using mail.example.com or the server name as hostname in their mail programme. If the use mail.example.com format and it's a cPanel migration, then email connection details will remain unchanged and migration will be seamless. But if it's not cPanel or the server name is used as hostname, then email programme settings will require updating.
