It depends whether I'm designing or coding.

Coding: good old drum and bass, or liquid dnb, I don't even know the difference but it sounds good aha

Designing: metal / hip-hop

It is said that music without lyrics helps with focusing on work/learning so I'm trying to follow this advice while listening music in work. Recently, I'm working with Daft Punk in my speakers - I don't notice how time and task passes :D

What metal/hip hop do you listen to?

I'm listening to this

(the Astro Boy video version, while official, seems like it was made by a fan). Really like Hexstatic. If you're interested (it is mildly irritating for the first minute, but that's the point) check out
(It's called Deadly Media - didn't want to bombard with too many embedded vids). Or check out
Ah, how I miss uni ;)

Well, I start the day off with Whiskey in the Jar (Metallica), such a class song. Metallica, P.O.D., Parkway Drive, Slipknot, Stone Sour. Hip-hop, Common, Kendrick Lamar, Aesop Rock, Lupe Fiasco, Macklemore (not Thrift Shop before anyone baits me aha), Black Star, Mos Def, prefer the old school vibe, you?

"Whiskey in the jarow!" Love how Hetfield sings that. I'm a (big?) Metallica fan but I actually prefer the Thin Lizzy version. Yeah, I like Slipknot and Stone Sour too. As for Hip Hop, going for the staple diet, I listen mostly to Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, Blackstar (as well) Jurassic 5 and Beastie Boys. There are a lot more of course. I'm not so 'down with the kids' on current Hip Hop (don't like the way it's changed). I posted this ages ago, but check out Scroobius Pip and

(excellent comment on modern hip-hop :D)

Aha yes Scroobius Pip, he's class. Saw him in Manchester about a year ago - also playing a fest I'm going to in August, can't wait.

; A Tribe Called Quest and J5 are class, nothing beats high fidelity.

I too like to listen music while working but not all the time. Sometimes I have to give my full concentration to my work so in this case I want a very calm atmosphere around me and turn off the music completely.

I prefer Hans Zimmer too. I normally find a one or two hour compilation of his movie soundtracks and let that run. I have actually experienced a boost in my productivity after I changed to music with no lyrics or vocals.

Get the Skyrim soundtrack on the go, nothing more ambient.

Really? I find as though if I have something which has vocals I tend to crack on more with a project, idek

I'd rather play the game ;) but if you want ambient, try Brian Eno - great stuff!

..slightly off topic but anyone know of a website like Spotify that I can listen to /get recommendations without having to install something?

I use YouTube for new stuff and iTunes Radio when I'm bored of my playlist. Last.fm is good and all but you have to install it and it's paid for. Introduced me to a lot of new music though :) If you're a 90's kid, the alternative stations on iTunes radio are pretty good - Foo Fighters, Bush, Soundgarden. There are also 90's things too - SL2, Baby D, Jurassic 5 - etc..

SL2 and BabyD? I'll grab my white gloves.

Don't forget the sutra's: Big fish, little fish, cardboard box ;)

Get on Spotify, spend the evening adding a massive amount of music to a playlist and code away.

I prefer Punk Rock but I'm doubting that's everyone's cup of tea...
Otherwise they do a 'radio' setting to play similar songs/genres.

I avoid Youtube or having to choose the music whilst working as it eats up way too much time...

Depends on what you're defining as Punk Rock. I'm quite fond of Gallows.

As we're all very familiar with social media and the like, what with our webbed fingers, I don't think I'm recommending anything new but this song in particular is getting me through your design work today. Absolutely love it!

I listen to that album quite a lot. The first track (Hand Covered Bruise) is great combined with the sound of rain. It literally locks me into concentration.

Did you ever listen to that new Primus album?

Did you ever listen to that new Primus album?

Yep - I got both that and the BoC album. I'll be completely honest; as ominous as it sounds, the Primus album hasn't grown on me yet - but that's not a bad thing. The BoC album is ace - really like it!

I have the Gallows EP playing in the car quite a bit (I forget the title - Death is Birth perhaps?) but I prefer the original vocalist. Forgot his name too. Hold on, where am I? Where's my teeth...

For all you stallions...

I just have now 78-83 on my iPhone and listen to that, purly to knock the noise out of others in my office :p

George Formby was Jay-Z's inspiration to get into the music industry, don't you know.

Depends on the piece I am working on. I am too heavily influenced by music and its theme to not take it into consideration.
I'm using jamendo radio chillout the most. Then depend on the overall feeling I want it to have. Great stuff is what Diablo Swing Orchestra makes, but that tends to interfere with the work so it's the best used for some shrot breakes in between the work.

You know, it all depends on my mood and also on the kinda climate. While its raining, I love melodies and while its cold I love some romantic songs.

  • 2 weeks later...

Following on from a little Ice Cube and NWA, I resorted back to this. Best NWA cover ever ;) Can see me being a similar father in the future bwah ha ha!

Oh heck, it's Saturday night and I'm feeling like not enough people have seen this opus by R Kelly. It's pretty old and there are some great parodies (check out MadTV) but still makes me laugh. Stick with it. Best episode is the cherry(?) pie.

I wonder if anyone has ever watched the whole thing? I got about 15 mins in before I cracked.

I have, but not in one sitting. Best I got to was about the 6th installment. The numbers are out a bit though as I saw it on YouTube and some people have split the actual chapters in half. Goons.

Me too because it will reduce the work stress :santa_kiss: :santa_kiss:

Two back to back awesome songs! I doubt I'll keep the interest going, but I'm loving a bit of Whale at the moment. Didn't they only do one song? ;)

On that note, wasn't someone stabbed outside the Purple Turtle a few weeks back?

Ah Reading.

http://listen.hatnote.com/ is my current background track, sad as it may seem. The fact it lacks rhythm stops it being distracting, and it's the soothing sound of knowledge being shared... what could be better!

Probably around the same time I was learning this on bass and smoking Superkings ;)

Ah you mean the new Purple Turtle ... I used to go to the Purple Turtle 1 (corner of London Street), before it 'accidently' burnt down ... and then onward to the After Dark ;)
