  1. After 6 years in the industry I'm sure you're far from rubbish, to me it sounds like you've taken a knock back which has dented your confidence. You can't please all of the people all of the time, this is life. Everyone will have their own opinions, this is human nature. The most important opinion at this time is of the people you have designed the site for, If they are not happy with how its looking then think about what they don't like and if necessary go back to the drawing board and hit them with new ideas/concept based on their thoughts. The functionality can stay the same, designs, colour schemes CSS etc can be changed easier once planned out thoroughly. "I'd never worked on anything this big and public before" - I think this is a telltale sign of why you are feeling like this, sounds like you're experiencing different challenges which you are not used to, don't let this get you down it's good to be shaken up a bit, it helps you to think about things differently, things you may have overlooked previously. This happens to all of us all of the time and I think it's one of the best ways to learn. Stop doubting yourself, you are where you are because you're good at what you do.
  2. I like number 4 overall: the word stream makes me think of flowing curves and the font on this one has these curved edges with each letter flowing into each other - I like the way this feels. When you hit the word box sharpness comes to mind and this is where number 5 has more impact for me, for this word. Out of those number 4 has the edge but I'd be tempted to play with a different font (sharper) for the word box just to see how it feels
  3. You need to pick a base colour - at the moment it's the far too bright Green and it's too overpowering for the page, this is causing all the other colours to clash and compete for space, which is confusing for the brain. Try swapping the Green out for a neutral colour, then add splashes of colours which work together in harmony. Use a colour chart like this http://colorschemedesigner.com/ to find a good balance. Good luck
  4. We always recommend w3schools.com the tutorial there are fantastic! HTML5: http://w3schools.com/html/html5_intro.asp CSS3: http://w3schools.com/css/css3_intro.asp
  5. Looks nice I certainly agree with teodora, a different font would suit this better.
  6. From a design perspective it feels a little dated and lacking a bit of soul. To put a current twist on this try a different font and some space added through padding. I think the colour scheme needs to worked out and given a bit more thought, it will be easier if you choose say 4 prime colours and then shades of these colours to keep everything together. This may help you choose: http://colorschemedesigner.com/ The background image makes the page what it is, the problem is it's so colourful, this is making it difficult to choose main colours for the website. You may struggle to get colours to fit this unless you perhaps make all boxes backgrounds white and then change the colour of the text in places. Experimenting with transparency may work here, similar to what Apple have done with IOS7 to overcome the users custom colourful backgrounds. Here's a link from a quick search which may help: http://www.webdirections.org/blog/creating-ios-7-effects-with-css3-translucency-and-transparency/
  7. Very interesting design idea! To assist quicker navigation it may be a good idea to make each of the page blocks clickable i.e. when looking at normal view you see 3 of them on screen, at this point it would be nice to click on the top one to scroll up to it or the bottom to go down, instead of just using the mouse wheel.
  8. http://www.ebuyer.com/466418-mx239h-23-led-ips-1920x1080-vga-hdmi-speakers-3-year-warranty-mx239h I like these, I have used them for movie watching and design work - I have three but two would be fine!

Signed up - looks like an interesting app - very nice design (only one comment - the sign up field was below the fold for my browser)
  10. I would say that you need to build on your basic skills and try a few projects yourself. Once you feel you have enough skill to offer for free or for a small price then I would go to small businesses and offer to do small work on website (knowing that your confident you can complete the work within a good time frame and also not break the current design) This will help with a portfolio and then I would look at junior positions in the industry, always keep learning and developing your skills. Good luck

  12. I agree with Jack, people often gain more and more followers and will not suffer from the justunfollow if they are not making too much noise, and the noise they are making is interesting, relevant and timely. Having a mixture of varied posts and unique content will help you engage with the audience and your followers.
  13. MOZ is a great resource http://moz.com/blog their blog and infographics are brilliant Watched one of the execs from moz speak about social media and what to share, times on sharing, types of media to share etc.... to get the biggest engagement and traffic to the website. The slides and videos are not up yet but they soon will be!
  14. Linkedin is like most tools - the more you put in the more you get out. Ak****a Sharma makes a good point, having a strong profile with relevant, up-to-date and interesting information is key - you do not want the viewers to look at a profile and say "so what" you want them to look at it and want to know more (and then gain a click through) Also having your own group with great not just good but great content will encourage your audience to share the content beyond the group and/or follow you and share your content on other platforms. Linkedin like all social media takes time, not necessarily difficult, just needs to be worked on.
  15. I think if page rank is not moving (which is hard to do) then you have to look at the site and why it is not relevant to the audience. Content in my eyes is King - Make the content: Specific Relevant Interesting The more people interact with content, share, like, comment etc... the better. Customer and prospective customer engagement is key in this. Also a question - are you just looking for an increase in page rank or are you mainly after an increase in sales? They are not the same.
  16. I agree with Salvagesites - if posting is to achieve what technosoftwares is saying then SEOs should not be creating too much noise and look at targeted, relevant and interesting content which engages with the audience, not just about putting info into the public domain.
  17. Have had experience with both - have to admit wordpress is easier!
  18. I would personally do a few projects for friends and family, perhaps even offer a free 1/2 day to local businesses to help them out with some design and development, something like a chamber of commerce (London is one of the busiest) and then you will gain enough portfolio (and perhaps even some paid work) from this, then I would suggest an SME who is looking for someone to take hold of their design and development which then will hopefully get you into an agency. Free work is the best especially for charities as well - often with big brand names - which looks great for a portfolio. Also maybe advertising the free work on a marketing forum - marketers like me often will give a person a chance of free work to demonstrate their skills and then to get some paid work. Good Luck!

  22. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE73D36103CA794EC A set of videos which you can watch on how to set counter buttons on your site up http://developer.linkedin.com/plugins https://twitter.com/about/resources/buttons https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/like-button/ https://developers.google.com/+/ Here are the other developer areas where you can choose what type of counters or sharing buttons you want and then copy and paste the code into your site.
  23. Hey - not a problem. Understand what you mean about pricing. If that is the case then perhaps emphasize in the text about being bespoke and people to fill out a basic form to get an idea of costs etc... The contact us page would really benefit from a quirky grey scale map which different artists/entertainment types can be pinned with pop ups of summary profile or what the entertainment is. I would have a separate and more comprehensive data capture form, focusing on what you need to know in order to give basic costs and or details for the prospective customer. I would personally want to know details like: Proposed date Is this flexible - yes / no (then another tick box on weekends only or week day possibility - this is great for making sure people can get what they need without you having to just say - sorry we are not available) Is this a celebration? Yes / no (this is great to find out so you can email 6-8 weeks prior to date next year to find out whether they would like a repeat or give a discount for a repeat booking) Area or postcode they are in or the requirement is in Number of people Is a venue required (might sound obvious but not all people will have a venue at time of inquiry and by offering may allow a "packaged" service offering) Name and Email and optional telephone. I like the windows 8 image box scroll over option which would then display text to entice clicks. I see you have done this on http://www.urbanedge-promotions.com/entertainment.html this looks brilliant, really takes the depth of the design to a new level, and the subtlety of the colours is impressive. Have noticed something going a little wrong with the banner layout on http://www.urbanedge-promotions.com/entertainment.html at the top in chrome, refreshed cache but it is still doing that. From a really basic SEO point of view, top tips: Mention location make sure titles of pages are in harmony with the URL Have a bottom nav to put pages which are hidden in the drop downs on the top nav Be specific in the text something like: We offer beat boxing performances in all areas of the UK, including London, Surrey and Berkshire. Our Surrey beat boxers are the best in the UK, so for your beat box entertainment needs we can offer the most variety and flexibility. Instead of We can offer a variety of beat boxing performances from solo shows to beat box battles where 2 of the UK's top beat boxers can battle it out for your entertainment. Then you would link the beat box pages to a google plus page labeled Surrey beat boxers etc..... which you then appear in the Google plus local listings and it will produce good click throughs. You also may want to then appear for the key terms: Surrey beat boxers, beat box entertainment, best beat boxers UK etc.... I am no expert at SEO but these general things that I have learnt over the past 8 years in marketing have really helped the listings and page rank of the websites I have worked on. A great resource is the videos from brighton SEO (I went back in sept) http://www.brightonseo.com/david-whatley/ http://www.brightonseo.com/ade-lewis/ These are good ones to tell you about basics and local listings. hope this all helps!
  24. Hi, I am guessing the nav in the first image are drop downs? I would put a left hand navigation bar to make the sections easily accessed. I would also have a basket at the top right which (if your an international ecommerce site) have currency options, and an item counter. I would move the search bar to the right. To make the bottom nav clearer I would have them in sections with titles I would also enable social sharing 'I like this item at this shop' type of stuff. Hope this helps!
