I'm working on a webdesign for community , but I'm lame designer I'm more into programming....

 

However I did something and would like to hear your critics, opinion or advice anything appreciated. I'm still not totaly happy with the result .

never use bevel and emboss for logo

look into logopond for some logo inspiration

 

i am not a big fan of the background image ..

subtle texture wud have been better ?

 

look into smashing magazine for portfolio themes or look for themeforest themes

Stuff like this needs to be much more simpler. Having a community site that complicated wont get used much and wont be popular. Id suggest looking at having basic colour theme with nice touches to it instead of the big blurred background and the bevel logo. that is a bit old bevel. Logopond is good or you can try dribble. The logos on that are **** hot!!

And you'll come out the other side with a more polished logo and layout. I could point out individual things but the emphasis should be on the principles at this point I think.

After suggested reading I think I will do better.

No... not looks so professional. It is just a basic design and you can find the similar theme on WordPress free of cost.

Try to make something different that will give and entire elegant look to your website.

I'm not an expert but I do find your design to be very messy and too dark. U have a dark background image and the content area background is also dark. The footer colour also does not fit in with the rest of the page. You need to work on your colours. Also, the logo is too big and there's not enough information in your header area. It's all taken up by the logo.

 

You should definitely check out some modern web designs. Just search on google for some inspiration.

The image you submitted is a big step up from your first design but here are a few suggestions

 

Blur out the background more make it just about viewable to what it is to re-focus things to your content

That logo really does need a complete rework, you need to work up concepts

The transparent top, Lose it, let the logo sit on it's own, centralised as it is will give it more focus

On the right, don't do blue red blue red etc stick to one of the other and use the colour you don't use as the title

Increase your menu font size

 

And I think that's it ;-)

I am definitely liking the individuality in your design. The background is to strong though and distracting from the content, the Clifton suspension bridge is such a well known landmark that you could easily get away with softening the image a lot more and it still being instantly recognized by visitors to your site.

 

Also the links are alternating red and blue, and the headlines are red an charcoal. I would use blue for the links and red for the headlines, or the other way about as long as it is consistent through the page.

Do look in to alignment issues
