I'm not too good at Graphic Design, but I'm really interested in learning and improving, so I'd appreciate some constructive criticism on what I've been working on. This logo is for two of my jazz musician friends for when they perform together as a duo.

 

I'd appreciate any advice on what I can change etc.

I don't know what to say exactly, but if You ask me I'd say work more on the first one, make the shape bigger, and since It's a music logo change the & into a treble clef, also try an move it to the left and make Ally inside also.

It's just an opinion, You may or You may not like It.

I don't know much about graphic design i'm afraid. I like the first design, although it screams more subtle, classical music to me, rather than Jazz. Are plectrums used that much in Jazz? I thought it consisted mainly of brass instruments? (Not a clue though ha!)

Thanks BugsBunny! I like the idea of changing the ampersand to look more like a treble clef! I'll try incorporate that.

 

Thanks benjwoo. I would've expected brass instruments too, but the guy plays guitar and she sings.. so I added the guitar pic. I'll try "jazz up" the first one though.

I agree with benjwoo. The font is sort of "romantic" and would be more suiteble for classical music. Modern jazz is very often associated with Swiss Style/International Typographic Style because of some famous album covers in the 60's. The only thing I have to ask is why are you using a guitar pick as part of the logo, its not something I would traditionally associate with Jazz. I also agree with benjwoo and nillervision about the font.

 

although in general they are pleasing logos I dont think they are a good solution to what you want them for..

 

in other words the designs are good but the actual concept needs work. sorry

I can see how important it is to give the details of who the graphic is for, since now knowing more about the duo it is easier to see the why you created those designs. Knowing that he is a guitar player and she is the singer - I really like the first one. Looking at that logo, that is exactly what I expect, the pick and simple name for the guitar player and the fancy script for the singer.

The 4th one (2nd from the right) is what caught my eye 1st. I don't know why.

I think they all look excellent as designs, so well done.

However I don't think any of them communicate jazz musician.

 

If you didn't point out what the logo was for, I would have thought an acoustic guitar duet.

Also that one of them plays a blues harp (ie. mouth organ).

I`m a musician, i don`t know if that counts but i like them all. They all look good, it`s a tough call, but if i had to choose i would go with the first one, it caught my eye instantaly and then i realized why. The only other thing i can mention is the feeling of the people for whom this is for. They will feel the style according to their musical concept, they will make the final decision.

The 1st logo seems to be the best. It looks simple.

First one looks the best, although the font of 'harp' doesn't seem right yet. The current font makes me think of some clothing chain or something. I also like the rectangular logo, but it's not readable enough. The last ones look like they make arabic music.
