  1. I've plonked this into my index.php file and it generates an error and doesn't load the page - so do I put this in the functions.php file instead? if so what do I put on my index.php file? I've tried it with: <?php wp_list_categories('orderby=name&title_li=Select A Category:'); ?> and <?php wp_list_categories( $post->ID, 'category', '', ', ', '' ); ?> but no luck.
  2. if I use this outside the loop: <?php wp_list_categories( $post->ID, 'category', '', ', ', '' ); ?> It churns out the categories, but no comma's appear between them.
  3. thanks - but neither of these work for whether inside or outside the loop - only brings back one category - I need this to work outside the loop so will keep looking for another solution. thanks.
  4. I've still not found a solution to this - anyone got any ideas? Dizi your option just creates links within a ul - it takes the li's out so you get something like this: <ul> <a href="">category</a>, <a href="">category</a>, <a href="">category</a>, </ul> and there's a comma at the end which isn't great but I could live with that if I could just get comma's in between the categories. At the moment I'm just putting a physical comma at the end of the category name within Wordpress which isn't an ideal solution either, but it works for now. Anyone know how I can do this with PHP?
  5. thanks for that - I'll give it a go - having a bit of time off due to RSI - been overworking to get my re-design done and suffering the consequences!
  6. I don't think anyone is goig to give you a step by step guide, so the best thing is to teach yourself and come here for help when you get stuck - it's easier to offer advice and guidance and help when someone has an actual coding issue they want to solve, not a blank canvas... Try watching a few of these screencasts and see how you get on - they definitiely helped me... http://css-tricks.com/video-screencasts/25-designing-for-wordpress-part-one/ http://css-tricks.com/video-screencasts/26-designing-for-wordpress-part-two/ http://css-tricks.com/video-screencasts/27-designing-for-wordpress-part-three/ http://css-tricks.com/video-screencasts/41-wordpress-as-a-cms/ http://css-tricks.com/video-screencasts/73-wordpress-theme/ http://css-tricks.com/video-screencasts/91-the-wordpress-loop/ Also check out this site - http://digwp.com/ and get the book - it's great.
  7. Does anyone know how I can get my category names separated by comma's? This is the code I have: <?php wp_list_categories('orderby=name&title_li=Select A Category:'); ?> and CSS I have makes it display inline, so I want to have a comma+space after each category name. Thanks E
  8. that's often a good way to get going...
  9. I've heard som good reports about concrete5...
  10. The charge for perch is passed onto the client as part of the fee for the job, so I deal with it that way, but still it's cheap and so I would still pay that if I wanted to use it for a personal project. The customer support is absolutely brilliant - it's like getting one-to-one tuition everytime you have a problem until it's solved and the response time is super fast too. I would definitely recommend it. I built this site with it recently: http://www.alisonhardcastle.co.uk
  11. I use Starkers most of the time, but have developed it into my own blank theme to suit my needs. I would recommend this siteand they're book also as it's packed full of the best tips and tricks for wordpress and I dip into it on a weekly basis.
  12. I know exactly how you feel - I was in the same situation a few years ago, but decided that enough was enough and it was time to face up to the fear and get my head round a cms - so I decided to try Wordpress out on a personal site and created my own blog on http://www.milomade.co.uk and then that got me into deep water as one of my web clients saw the blog and asked if he could have one, so I said OK and had to build another blog and learn from the mistakes I made first time around. Then another job came in and I got more confident with it and then I started using it as a cms - I still feel totally lost sometimes with wordpress and can't figure stuff out - see my latest post about my own site redesign - so I ask on here for help when I get stuck, but I've managed to build several large sites and blogs using Wordpresss and love it now. So perservere with it as it's worth it in the end!
  13. Perch is incredibly basic and easy to implement - but it's not the typical kind of CMS - but have a look at it as it's very easy to use. I use Perch on some simple small sites, but mostly use Wordpress as a CMS for everything else.
  14. put this in your functions.php file // custom excerpt length function custom_excerpt_length($length) { return 90; } add_filter('excerpt_length', 'custom_excerpt_length'); // custom excerpt ellipses for 2.9+ function custom_excerpt_more($more) { return '...'; } add_filter('excerpt_more', 'custom_excerpt_more'); // excerpt read more links and wrap excerpt in p tag function all_excerpts_get_more_link($post_excerpt) { return '<p>' . $post_excerpt . ' <a href="'. get_permalink($post->ID) . '">' . 'Continue Reading ›' . '</a></p>'; } add_filter('wp_trim_excerpt', 'all_excerpts_get_more_link'); ?> from the digging into wordpress site - this enable you to make the excerpt any length you like, change the default [...] into just three dots at the end and then adds a read more link with the permalink. Hope that helps.
  15. Not very many helpful responses here so far and a few very opinionated folk too - yes people still build static sites - get over it! So I thought I'd chip in and help as I've pulled wordpress posts from a blog into a static html page in the past and it's not an easy thing to find a solution for on Google as I remember searching for ages and I think I got help on this forum in the end. Hope this helps... Right at the top of your HTML code before the doctype insert: <?php // Include Wordpress define('WP_USE_THEMES', false); require('./blog/wp-blog-header.php'); query_posts('showposts=3'); ?> I've got showposts=3 above as I was pulling in the latest three posts - just change that to whatever number you want. Then insert this code into the HTML where you want the blog posts to appear: <?php while (have_posts()): the_post(); ?> <h2><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h2> <?php // Display content above the more tag $more = 0; the_content("More..."); ?> <br /> <?php endwhile; ?> You'll want to change the code a bit if you don't want the permalink to be an H2 etc, but this should at least get you on the right track - it worked for me at the time, hope it does for you.
  16. I'm working on localhost, so can't post a link to the actual pages I'm working on. I'm redesigning my Eskymo site and doing it all in wordpress so that I can have a dynamic portfolio that's easy to update. But I'm having problems with the homepage. I've got the homepage running off a page template [page-home.php] so that I can use the index.php and single.php for my portfolio section - instead of having a blog. The portfolio is image led and so each post on the index.php page is shown as a post featured image. It's running pretty much in the same way as this site I built http://www.olwenshone.co.uk The only difference is that I want to show three random posts on the homepage, not just one as in the site example, but so far eveything I've tried has messed up the code and layout. The olwenshone.co.uk site using this on the homepage template: <?php /* Template Name: Home */ ?> <?php get_header(); ?> <div id="content-home"> <?php query_posts('posts_per_page=1&orderby=rand'); ?> <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <div class="post"> <div class="boxgrid captionfull"> <?php the_post_thumbnail('index-thumbnail'); ?> <div class="cover boxcaption backopacity"> <h3><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h3> </div> </div> <?php endwhile; endif; ?> <?php wp_reset_query(); ?> </div> <div class="floatclear"></div> </div><!-- #content-home --> <?php get_footer(); ?> and so I tried using the [ <?php query_posts('posts_per_page=1&orderby=rand'); ?> ] on my site and changed the posts_per_page to equal 3. This does churn out three posts reandomly, but the code for the posts isn't right as it generates the following: <div class="post"> <div class="boxgrid captionfull"> <img width="320" height="192" src="http://eskymo.localhost/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/image-one-320x192.jpg" class="attachment-index-thumbnail wp-post-image" alt="image-one" title="image-one" /> <div class="cover boxcaption backopacity"> <h3><a href="http://eskymo.localhost/uncategorized/this-is-post-1/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to This is post 1">This is post 1</a></h3> </div><!-- END cover boxcaption backopacity --> </div><!-- END boxgrid captionfull --> <div class="post"> <div class="boxgrid captionfull"> <img width="320" height="192" src="http://eskymo.localhost/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/image-two-320x192.jpg" class="attachment-index-thumbnail wp-post-image" alt="image-two" title="image-two" /> <div class="cover boxcaption backopacity"> <h3><a href="http://eskymo.localhost/uncategorized/this-is-post-2/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to This is post 2">This is post 2</a></h3> </div><!-- END cover boxcaption backopacity --> </div><!-- END boxgrid captionfull --> <div class="post"> <div class="boxgrid captionfull"> <img width="320" height="192" src="http://eskymo.localhost/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/image-three-320x192.jpg" class="attachment-index-thumbnail wp-post-image" alt="image-three" title="image-three" /> <div class="cover boxcaption backopacity"> <h3><a href="http://eskymo.localhost/uncategorized/this-is-post-3/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to This is post 3">This is post 3</a></h3> </div><!-- END cover boxcaption backopacity --> </div><!-- END boxgrid captionfull --> </div><!-- END post --> So it's enclosing three posts within the one post div. So I guess I'm doign it wrong. How can I fix this so that I generate three separate random posts?
  17. No I have to disagree with you there again - in her text, she is not referring to having a practice like a doctor's surgery - she practises art - i.e she's an artist, so in this context saying 'My practise' is completely correct.
  18. I don't come on here much anymore either - too many spammers, too much arogance, too much waiting around for help that by the time someone responds to your issue, you've either moved on or figured it out yourself anyway. Thanks for your help on the random order thing though - much appreciated.
  19. I've totally disregarded the latest loop file within 3.0 as I don't need any of it - and just stuck with something stremlined and basic.
  20. also 'practise' in this context is spelt correctly.
  21. great list of plugins - thanks for the recomendations - there's a few there that I use alot, but some I've not come across so will go and check them out. Cheers.
  22. I'd also like to point out that this is the source of the jquery code: http://buildinternet.com/2009/03/sliding-boxes-and-captions-with-jquery/ maybe you should contact the author with your comments about missing commas. Anyway I've fixed the issue now - no comma's required. I was reading the original CSS as if it had comma's and so made up the additional CSS for the homepage with that in mind when it wasn't necessary - I took out the additional reference to content-home and that solved the issue. Just thought I'd post that up in case anyone else makes the same silly mistake that I did.
  23. Thanks sunwukung for testing this fix suggested and being so polite. ooh a few cocky comments here from other folk that are not very appreciated - firstly I must re-stress that the site is still in progress, the content was supplied by the client and copied and pasted into the site and so spelling issues are not down to me and if the last paragraph of text needs a little more thought, then that's also down to the client. Also I'm not a 'he' but a 'she'. Note that next to the word gender it says female! Invisibleink - I do listen to folk on this forum and I'm very grateful for any help I can get with issues that arise with sites that I'm building - I wouldn't post on the forum if I wasn't looking for help. I did take into account what sunwyukung but thought he was looking at the wrong bit of CSS so I pointed this out to him as I was under the impression that the code I pasted into my initial post was the code where the problem existed - I wasn't aware that I'd left a couple of comma's out of CSS as I've been too preoccupied figuring out and coding an easy way for the client to upload one large image into each post and for this to be scaled down and appear in three different places on the website at three different sizes - as well as dealing with jquery stuff that I'm not very familiar with as I've not delved into jquery very much. Spelling mistakes aren't part of this issue, I'm glad you've pointed them out, but it's a shame you've had to be so negative. Thanks for pointing the flaws in my CSS - I will go and correct them and hope not to offend you with my code in the future.
  24. Nope - you're looking at the wrong bit of CSS - that CSS is for the jquery hover that happens on the work page - this needs to have 186px in place. I've dupliacted these styles and applied new settings for the homepage below this set within the CSS file. Maybe I've done it all wrong and that's what's causing the issue. The images height on the homepage is 550px and the height of the caption box is 36px - hence the figure of 514px. Well that's my understanding of it as it works on the Work page and I just scaled up the maths to suit the homepage image, but it's not working.
  25. I wholeheartedly agree with you there!
