November 8, 201015 yr Using Wordpress 3.0 and want to develop my own theme. With previous versions of WP I've just created a new theme folder and used the Starkers theme as a starter. But with the latest version I'm not sure what to do to create a new theme. Firstly all the file mention twentyten throughout like so: - <?php _e( 'Not Found', 'twentyten' ); ?> - <?php if ( in_category( _x('gallery', 'gallery category slug', 'twentyten') ) ) : ?> - <?php twentyten_posted_on(); ?> etc So do I replace all the 'twentyten' instances with my own theme name? or do I leave everything referencing 'twentyten' and place my new them folder within the twentyten folder so it becomes a child theme? It's used to be so easy prior to 3.0 and now with this new version I'm totally confused. There are so many additional files to deal with. Does anyone know of an online resource that takes you through the basic changes from 2.9 to 3.0 and spells out the difference and how to deal with the new stuff? thanks E
November 9, 201015 yr I wouldn't change the twenty ten references as it may be be linked to functions and mess up the theme. It's not that hard to create a 3.0 theme, it's just the 2.x theme but with added features. I am writing a tutorial (slowly) for 3.0 which will go on my blog.
November 9, 201015 yr I noticed this too. I just leave it there. But what are the references doing exactly??!!
November 9, 201015 yr Author Okay - but I'm creating my own theme - it's not a child theme to twentyten. So surely I copy the twentyten fodler with all it's contents, rename the folder to be my theme name, edit the css file so the info at the top is relevant to my theme, change the screenshot png file etc. Or alternatively do the same, but use the downloaded starkers blank theme. Any would I therefore want the words twentyten littered throughout the code? If you're creating a child theme of twentyten, then you would only copy through select files into your new theme folder - like the style.css and the function.php files and edit these to overwrite or add to the ones that already exist within twentyten - I don't want to do this as I want to create my own standalone theme from scratch. I really got to grips with wordpress prior to the release of v3.0 and now I'm back to square one and totally baffled by it all. The entire new setup totalyl confuses me and I can't find any decent tutorials or info out there that helps. The Codex isn't much help either as a lot of it refers to prior versions of wordpress.
November 11, 201015 yr Author I signed up for a 7 days trial at lynda.com and just watch Chris Coyiers training course for WP3.0 and he totally ignores the majority of the new stuff that comes with WP3.0 - so I've done the same and just stripped it all out as I don't need it for the site I'm building. So my code isn't llittered with 'twentyten' anywhere as I'm not creating a child theme, but a custom theme.
November 18, 201015 yr Author I've totally disregarded the latest loop file within 3.0 as I don't need any of it - and just stuck with something stremlined and basic.
