Does IE not do FlashVars?
I worked on this site a while back with some students at Napier University and we're all sure it worked fine in IE at the time, but it was a stressful time and we had to get the site done quickly before their degree show. Looking at it now we find that the flash image scroller on the homepage doesn't work in IE. http://photographyandfilm.co.uk/index.html In Internet Explorer we get a white box and the scolling images don't appear...but they do in other browsers. When running the page in IE for the first time I got asked to install the add-on required to run the flash file, so I do that and select to run the add-on. Still a white box. The flash is a file we purchased - I think it's a component of some sort that pulls the image info from an xml file and the code on the page to pull in the flash is: <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/sw flash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="900" height="350"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="movie" value="homepage.swf" /> <param name="FlashVars" value="xmlFile=scroller_homepage.xml" /> <embed src="scroller_homepage.swf" FlashVars="xmlFile=scroller_homepage.xml" width="900" height="350" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /> </object> I notice we've used the dreaded embed tag, so we must have been in a hurry, but it might have been the way the component suggested to add the flash to the page. I'm no expert on FlashVars so wouoldn't know about how to change ti to make it. Any suggestions?

Inserting an RSS feed into a web page

Inserting an RSS feed into a web page
I've got a client who wants to insert a financial RSS feed into a page on his site. How do I got about doing this so that it's styled like the rest of his content - I don't want to have it as a widget of any kind. I just want it to look like his normal content. I will include a 'Powered by Citywire' at the bottom - which is where we're going to get the feed from. I signed up for WebRSS and created code from that but when I paste it into the website it generates invalid code and I'm not happy with that - there's no way to edit the actual code it generates, so I'm now looking for another solution. Anyone know of the best way to do this - the easier the better and so long as it generates valid code. Thanks E

I've just opted to use the invalid code I've posted above as it works. I don't have the time to care about standards right now...

How do you find new jobs?
Do good work that your clients love - they then tell everyone and all of a sudden new clients come from those recommendations. That;s how I get new work - my clients do my marketing for me - it's great - means I never have to do any cold calling.

Embed quicktime into an offlin html page
if I used this invalid code: <object classid="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" width="320" height="260"> <param name="src" value="Sail_01/alexpatience01.mp4" /> <param name="controller" value="true" /> <param name="loop" value="false" /> <param name="autoplay" value="false" /> <embed src="Sail_01/alexpatience01.mp4" height="260" width="320" autoplay="false" type="video/quicktime"></embed> </object> they play fine - why won't the valid code work?

Embed quicktime into an offlin html page
Hey all I'm wokring on a CD-rom website at the moment - taking something that is online and making an offline version of it. Having trouble with my quicktime files. On the live site I've used the following code: <div class="videobox"> <object classid="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" width="320" height="260"> <param name="src" value="Sail_01/annebevan03.mov" /> <param name="controller" value="true" /> <param name="loop" value="false" /> <param name="autoplay" value="false" /> <!--[if !IE]>--> <object type="video/quicktime" data="Sail_01/annebevan03.mov" width="320" height="260"> <param name="controller" value="true" /> <param name="loop" value="false" /> <param name="autoplay" value="false" /> </object> <!--<![endif]--> </object> </div> When I use this in the offline version and test locally, the videos don't load and I just get a blackbox with a faded quicktime logo with a white question mark on top of it. How do I get the video's to work?

Possibly need to buy a new laptop and looking for advice
thanks for the info - that's a relief. I've done a bit of googling and it seems that I'll be fine so long as I opt for a 32-bit system rather than a 64-bit - not that I know what that means.

Possibly need to buy a new laptop and looking for advice
Ok so my laptop went into meltdown yesterday and I can't get it back up and running. Going to get it looked at by an IT specialist tomorrow - not sure who yet, but I want to see if it can be resuscitated first and if not I will need to buy a new laptop asap. So I have a budget of around £500 [pretty skint at the moment as I've just paid my taxbill] so the cheaper the better. My current laptop is a Lenovo 3000 N200 running windows XP. Whatever replaces this needs to be able to run my Adobe CS3 suite and my Microsoft Outlook and my ZoneAlarm Extreme Security, although I'd be happy to ditch MSOutlook for Thunderbird or similar to be honest - my CS3 is the important stuff. Will this run on Vista or Windows 7 - anyone know as I can't afford to buy new software too and before anyone brings it up - I've tried free alternatives before I invested in CS3 and want to stick with CS3! Should I go for Vista or Windows 7? I would predominantly be using the laptop for work - web design, graphic design, photography etc. I won't be doing any serious gaming on it - definitely not online stuff anyway. need something that can be connected to my external monitor with ease. need something that doesn't weigh a ton. it would be good to be able to use the RAM I have from this laptop - would it be transferable - couldn't tell you what I have to be honest though so that doesn't help. Any suggestions from you computer geeks you? any help much appreciated.

Wordpress header image switch
that's a good idea - might try that. Still waiting for the new logo so might be next week before I implement this. Nifty feature though to add to the wordpress as cms box of tricks.

Wordpress header image switch
Hi All I did a site for a client recently in wordpress and have been requested to show a different logo on one of the pages. The logo resides in the header.php file so I'm guessing I'm going to have to do this dynamically and thought I should take advantage of the <body <?php body_class(); ?>>. I know the page ID for the single page is 5, so would this work: <?php if (is_page('5')) { ?> <img src="/assets/alt_logo.gif" alt=" " /> <?php } else { ?> <img src="/assets/default_logo.gif" alt=" " /> <?php } ?> Just want to ask the experts before I start making a mess. Ta E

I honestly can't figure it out - I'm new to jQuery and when it comes to PHP I'm no expert there either and I played around with it for a while this morning and got nowhere! If you say it's easy, I'm quite embarassed!

Great tutorial - it works independantly and I will definitely use this on future projects, so thanks for taking the time to do that - but it doesn't work in this case - I couldn't get it to work with the way I've got my page laid out. You have: <h2><a href="#">Title<span>Text overlay</span></a></h2> I have: <h3><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h3> <?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?> I've done the CSS so that the H3 sits on top of the post thumbnail and it's not part of the same link as in your example where you have the Title and the text overlay together. Is there anyway of adapting it to work with this setup?

Can't get my head round Worpdress Title tag
I've fiddled about with it now and used the following: <title><?php if (is_home()) { echo 'Client Name | '; bloginfo('description'); } elseif (is_404()) { echo 'Error - 404 Page Not Found'; } elseif (is_category()) { echo 'Client Name | '; wp_title(''); } elseif (is_search()) { echo 'Client Name | Search Results'; } elseif ( is_day() || is_month() || is_year() ) { echo 'Client Name | '; wp_title(''); } elseif( is_single() ) { $cat = get_the_category(); echo 'Client Name | '; echo $cat[0]->name; echo wp_title('|'); } else { echo 'Client Name | '; wp_title(''); } ?></title> And that works fine and dandy. Thanks Eris! If anyone can tell me how I can replace the 'Client Name |' with bloginfo('name'); and still have a '|' appear after the name that's be brilliant as I can't get that right.

Okay I've found an example of the effect I'm looking for - it's a jQuery thing, it comes with a turtorial but I just can't implement it. All my attempts have failed miserably, so I've reverted the site back to how it was and wondering if anyone can tell me if this is possible with the set up I have. This tutorial is here: http://buildinternet.com/2009/03/sliding-boxes-and-captions-with-jquery/ The site is: http://www.alimaclaurin.com/ My code for the index.php page is: <?php get_header(); ?> <div id="outerwrapper"> <div id="wrapper"> <div id="page"> <div class="left"> <?php if (have_posts()) : ?> <h2 class="archivecategory">Latest Work</h2><br /> <?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <div class="post" id="post-<?php the_ID(); ?>"> <h3><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h3> <?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?> <?php the_content(''); ?> </div> <?php endwhile; ?> <div class="space"> </div> <div class="post-nav"> <?php if(function_exists('wp_pagenavi')) { wp_pagenavi(); } ?> </div> <?php else : ?> <h2>Not Found</h2> <p>Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here.</p> <?php include (TEMPLATEPATH . "/searchform.php"); ?> <?php endif; ?> </div> <div class="right"> <?php get_sidebar(); ?> </div> <div class="floatclear"></div> </div> </div> </div> <?php get_footer(); ?> and the styles for my post links at the moment is: /* HOMEPAGE POST TITLE H3 SITTING ON TOP OF THE IMAGE */ .post h3{ position: relative; } .post h3 a { background: #cccccc; color: #ffffff; padding: 5px 10px 5px 10px; position: absolute; display: block; width: 320px; left: 0px; top: 148px; } .post h3 a:hover { background: #7D67B8; color: #ffffff; text-decoration: none; } .post .wp-post-image { margin: 5px 30px 0px 0px; float:left; } I'm using the wordpress post-thumbnails function to pull am image 340px x 180px into the index.php and for this image to then be larger once you click into the specific post. I just want the H3 link to rollover the image when you rollover it as in the first example in the link below, which is the demo of the tutorial: https://buildinternet.s3.amazonaws.com/live-tutorials/sliding-boxes/index.htm

nope I'm afraid I'm lost with what you suggest above - tried a few things out but having a display: none on the link means there is no link. Looking in jquery animated effects, even though that's totally beyond my capabilities I think.

Can't get my head round Worpdress Title tag
used echo single_cat_title(' | ', false) . wp_title(''); and it's still just churning out Client Name | Post Title I give up! Is it the version of wordpress I'm using - it's the latest - 2.9.1
-
Can't get my head round Worpdress Title tag
if I replace the whole line with echo wp_title(''); then I just get the post title. If I add echo wp_title(''); instead of just wp_title(''); I get a parse syntax error.
