1. eh? what do you mean by stock functions.php file? This is the file that I downloaded and came with wordpress 3.0 - I just think there's something not right about it - I don't code PHP so woulnd't know where to start looking, it just doesn't display right in dreamweaver and I get the 'invalid markup' error message whenver I load it up.
2. Hey all My blog [www.milomade.co.uk/blog/] was entered into the Dorset Cereals little blog awards and I thought I was doing OK until I looked at the competitors vote count today. If you have the time to take a look at my blog and vote if you like it, I'd really appreciate it. Visit this link to cast your vote, or click on the voting button in the side bar of my blog as that will take you to the same place. Many thanks E
3. I;ve installed wordpress 3.0 for a new client site and trying to get my head round it - not succeeding either. Anyhow I've opened the function.php file in dreamweaver and half way down the colour coding kind of stops and this makes me think something is amiss. There alsow isn't a closing php tag ?> at the end of the code. Can someone have a look at this and let me know if there's something wrong with it. <?php /** * TwentyTen functions and definitions * * Sets up the theme and provides some helper functions. Some helper functions * are used in the theme as custom template tags. Others are attached to action and * filter hooks in WordPress to change core functionality. * * The first function, twentyten_setup(), sets up the theme by registering support * for various features in WordPress, such as post thumbnails, navigation menus, and the like. * * When using a child theme (see http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development and * http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes), you can override certain functions * (those wrapped in a function_exists() call) by defining them first in your child theme's * functions.php file. 4. I'm looking for an e-commerce solution for Milomade and was thinking of running it through Wordpress. I downloaded and installed WP e-commerce and found it a total nightmare. No decent documentation on how to customise the look or set it up - just found info on the basics which just isn't enough for me. So I did a search for other wordpress plugins and found eShop and EcWid and out of the two I thik EcWid looks great. It may not be so good for SEO right now but it looks like the easiest to implement and I could probably add it to my site as well as my Facebook page at the same time. Has anyone else used it? Is it any good?
5. It's best to get a signature on pronted paper, but if you want to send out a PDF contract via email and get this accepted by email, then simply state this when you send the contract out. Say that the client has to reply and formally accept the contract via email and that their response/acceptance will be printed out and attached to a copy of the invoice as proof. I did have a client who figures out that you can digitally sign a PDF - so it can be done like that and emailed back to you, but I prefer the first option where they spell their acceptance out so that you can print it out - make sure that when you print it out, you include the email headers that show the date and time it was sent and from whom.
6. yes I have - but thought it would be nice to hear from someone who's actually used one of the plugins and had success with it rather than just picking one at random trying it out and finding out it's crap and having to move onto another one. I thought someone on this forum might have tried running a membership type site...
7. have you made any headway with this as I'd like to ask the same question. I'm setting up a aite for a client using Wordpress and in the near future he wants to add a members only section for paying subscribers. So I'm looking for a plugin or the means to set something like this up, where people join the site and pay a monthly fee - no idea how this would be done, so if anyone can shed any light on this that'd be great. Thanks
8. thanks for the reply - I was expecting more, but maybe not many people use wordpress for ecommerce stuff. Will have a look at the site link and maybe sign up for the 30 day trial and try it out.
9. My client is wanting to set up a new website and we want to use wordpress as the CMS as that would enable a site and a blog all in one and he's used to using wordpress as a CMS on his other site, so it's seems like the best solution. The initial purpose of the new site is to advertise a course he's running in Novemeber and he wants people to be able to purchase tickets online. I'm wondering what the best approach is - should I use one of the many e-commerce plugins that come with wordpress, and if so which one would be best, or do I use an external open source shopping cart script. I need to set it up initially just to sell tickets for the course, but in the future he's also going to want to sell e-books and digital downloads so it would be good to find a solution that would allow for all that. I need something simple that's easy to implement but is also very secure as I'm a total novice when it comes to e-commerce stuff - that's why I thought wordpress plugins would be the way to go - but are they secure. I guess they all integrate with PayPal - client says that's OK, but he's also looking into something that the Bank of Scotland offer for online payments as he's just opened an account with them and so might want to use their solution - not sure if I'll be able to implement it and waiting to hear from him about that. Any information/advice would be very welcome from any experts out there - I'd like to hear about plugins, scripts you've actually used and if they work well. Also with selling tickets online - how does the purchase process work? You click to pay, then pay and then what - do you get a digital downloadable ticket or just an email confrimation. I've never bought tickets online for any event, so not sure how to work this. Thanks E
10. If I remove the 'more' tag then it works on the index.php page. so I think I'm going to change the way the blog posts are displayed and use the_excerpt instead the_content - never had that issue before as I've got three sites which are set up as I had it set up originally and they all work fine. Very confusing.
11. thanks for your help - I'll keep playing about and see if I can fix it.
12. well I've added it and uploaded it and if I go to http://www.colinandrews.org I get the cutoff excerpt with no read more link.
13. I just opened the .htaccess file and found this within it: # BEGIN WordPress <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /blog/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /blog/index.php [L] </IfModule> # END WordPress I didn't put that there - I guess it's just automatically generated. Should I just put: DirectoryIndex home.php index.php index.html index.htm after that?
14. The files are identical in content - so not sure what you mean? I took the original home.php file and saved it as index.php without changing anything. I want to get rid of the home.php file.
15. I have this at the start of the document: <?php // Include Wordpress define('WP_USE_THEMES', false); require('./blog/wp-blog-header.php'); query_posts('showposts=1'); ?> And then where I want the blog excerpt to appear, I have this:
Latest News
<?php while (have_posts()): the_post(); ?>
<?php the_title(); ?>
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
<?php endwhile; ?> In the blog functions.php file I have added the following: <?php function improved_trim_excerpt( $text ) { if ( '' == $text ) { $permalink = get_permalink(); // my addition $text = get_the_content( '' ); $text = strip_shortcodes( $text ); $text = apply_filters( 'the_content', $text ); $text = preg_replace( '@@si', '', $text ); $text = str_replace( '', '', $text ); $text = strip_tags( $text, '
' ); // allowed tags (change as needed) $excerpt_length = apply_filters( 'excerpt_length', 80 ); $excerpt_more = apply_filters('excerpt_more', ' ' . '[...] read more »'); // my addition $words = explode( ' ', $text, $excerpt_length + 1 ); if ( count( $words ) > $excerpt_length ) { array_pop( $words ); $text = implode( ' ', $words ); $text = $text . $excerpt_more; $text = force_balance_tags( $text ); // my addition } } return $text; } remove_filter( 'get_the_excerpt', 'wp_trim_excerpt' ); add_filter( 'get_the_excerpt', 'improved_trim_excerpt' ); ?> If you need anything else, let me know.
16. I've been working on my partners website this weekend and have just put it live but a strange glitch has just occurred. Over the weekend I had a holding page up as the index.php and was using home.php as the temporary home page link. So just now I changed the name of home.php to index.php and upoaded this to overwrite the holding page - so the code for the new index.php is identical to that of home.php which is still on the server to deomnstrate the glitch. If you visit: http://www.colinandrews.org/home.php'>http://www.colinandrews.org/home.php You'll see the latest blog post being pulled in at the bottom of the page with a read more link. If you then visit: http://www.colinandrews.org/ You'll see part of the latest blog post [less than on the home.php file] and no read more link. I'm totally baffled as the files are identical apart from in name. Anyone got any ideas? Am I missing something totally obvious?
17. fixed it - there was another reference to the TagName within the jquery.hoverimagetext.compressed.js file - so I changed that to span and now it works. Thanks for the help - got so much to do on this site tonight that my brain is melting!
18. Ok I've changed it to be 'span' instead of 'p' - I've adjust the css for it and changed the javascript bit that refers to 'p' to be 'span' in the jquery.hoverimagetext.js file like so: /* Available options*/ $.fn.HoverImageText.defaults = { AnimShow: {opacity: "show"}, AnimShowCallback: null, HoverCheck: 600, HoverIn: 500, AnimHide: {opacity: "hide"}, AnimHideCallback: null, HoverOut: 300, TagName: 'span' }; it no longer works - there is no hover. So I add your version of the javascript line and that made no difference either. Why won't it work with anything but a p tag???
19. I tried instead of the
but that brought up the same validation error in the browser. IN order for it to work bothe the text and the image need to be hyperlinked. I think I might go and look for another script...
20. I applied this script to the header of a site to get text to appear when you hover over the masthead image. Got it all working, but wasn't thinking about the structure of the code - new to jquery so I was more concerned with getting in working than what the code lloked like - until now. Now that I look at it I realise that I can't have a paragraph tag where it is. I don't know how I can make this code valid - any ideas?

...detail from 'I may be some time...'

The jquery code specifies that anything within the 'p' element is the hover text. I can't attach the jquery file as WDF won't let me, so go view the source of this page and get the links to them from there: http://www.colinandrews.org/home.php Any jquery experts out there who can help?
21. it's for the other half - it's been in the making for three years and we've just never got round to completing it - so it's had three or four redesigns in the time but no content. He needs it up and running asap as he's applying for some residencies and so we're doing a bit of a rush job to get it done this weekend.
22. you guys are just pure geniuses! Thanks you so much for your help!!! This is beginning to work/look the way I want it to now. my fella is going to be really impressed when he gets back in as I thought the two columns thing would be really complicated - I didn't even think to do with CSS - what a fool am I!! Ta very much!
23. No I didn't do it right - but I have now and it works, but I'm getting a weird thing happening where there is a large images appearing with accompanied text and I have no idea where the script is pulling this from as I've checked all the files within the featuredwork folder and none of them contain a large image and text. Any ideas? This is the link - http://www.colinandrews.org/home.php ignore this - I've found it - there was a file in that folder called featured_0.php which I hadn't noticed. Now I've got to figure out how to do two columns - any ideas?
24. If I do this: <?php $files = scandir("featuredwork/"); //loads the name of all files in a direct to an array shuffle($files); //randomly shuffle this array $num_img = 5; //we want to only print out 6 images foreach ($files as $key=>$file) { // loop over our randomised array of imagenames if (strpos($file,".php")!==false) { //check that they actualy have a .jpg extension, (we do this because scandir returns "."(current directory) and ".."(parent directory) also if($num_img--<0) { break; } // stop looping after we have 6 images. ?>
<?php print $file; ?>
<?php } } ?> It prints out a list of random file names. I've treid to change this to 'include' rather than 'print' and that doesn't work - so how would I get it to show the contents of the file and not the file name itself?
25. Been playing with james' script and it would work great if it was just images - but I need to have links on each of the images, hence having them all in separate php files. Tried to adapt it to use php file and failed. Any help???
