Hi. I am new to this and I have through, a misunderstanding bought a domain name that is of no use to me. It seems I cannot get a refund on domain names. I am wondering if it is possible to get this changed to one that I can make use of and if so, how do I go about it?

As it probably didn't cost much just put it to one side and let it expire. You don't buy domain names, all you you have is a license to use it for a year or two.

Yes. That is what I thought. The hosting service I have been using, said they could, and did change a domain name from .org.uk to .org but now I can't get into it via FTP or any other way. The changed domain name already exists and is in use, so I wondered how they could change it at all?

Wow, I'm pretty sure you can't 'swap' a domain name after registration, only register a new domain. Secondly they can't have registered a domain when it's owned by someone else. I think all they might have done was update the hosting package under the other domain, this is easily under their control, I hope you're confused and not the hosting company thinks they can swap domains, that would be weird.

As far as I know you can't get refunds on domain name registrations.

 

The one you registered, just let it lapse - check that auto-renewals are not active.

 

Register a new name and ask your hosting company if they can remap the hosting account to use the new one, at worst all they'd have to do is set up a new account for you and delete the old one.
