How to get more back links to my website?

There are two things that are important in a website to bring more traffic. First the design of your website. Your website should have a clean and professional looking design. Design is the first thing the user look at. The design of the website should be strong enough to the invite the user to read your blog post. The second important thing is the contents of your website. There is a reason every blogger emphasize on the contents of the website. Your website should offer different and strong contents. If you would offer the same content as the other websites then the users have no reason to use your website. Improve your website design and contents and then optimize your website. After this you will receive traffic. And One last thing that optimizing the website takes time. It is not something you can do in 24 hours.

Content is king! Good quality content. You must of heard the phrase "Build it and they shall come..." well the same applies. Build something that people want and you will find natural traffic.

The more and more that Google updates its search engine algorithms, the more and more black hat SEO techniques do not work. There are no shortcuts that stand the test of time.

Well built and fast sites with great unique content regularly updated will find its way to the top through all of the useless crap.

think fresh content is most important part of the website . If your content is not unique according to google then google decrease your website rank and your site will be penalized. Some seo techniques helps to improve your site traffic such as forum, blog, directory, profile creation and multimedia.

There is an important point to make about 'content is king', which is rarely discussed.

If you are writing about something that is popular but not covered so much online (for example a sort of specialised trade material), then you can drive a serious amount of traffic to your website. However if you are writing about anything in the web design industry you can be sure it has already been covered hundreds of times, so even if your content is uniquely written you are unlikely to get much traffic for it. The only way you will is if you already have a serious amount of content related, top quality backlinks proving to Google that you are a respected website!

So the question should not be, how do I get more backlinks to my website, but instead, how do I get more people to notice my website, and once there, what can my website do that will want them to naturally decide to create a backlink?

Yeah, this is spot on.

Or even better, what can I do to my website that will attract visitors and convert them without doing any link building.

In my line of work that is not too difficult as many members want to show that they are listed. However take for example my members who are web design companies what kind of thing would you suggest?

..You can promote your blog in discussion forums related to your niche for Backlink building...

You can try, yes. Unfortunately, I've been removed from 2 forums for doing that in the past. I simply posted a very relevant link to a page on a site of mine in a thread, and the moderator saw it as some sort of competition. So, being part of that community appeared to be a challenge, regardless of one's passion or enthusiasm to contribute. I didn't bother to register as someone else, to post the same link, which would probably have been allowed in that case (depending on post count I expect).

In a different field and forum, I've been a recognized contributor.

Obviously we all come from different areas and have different goals (hobby, business, fun, getting involved, etc.).

This sounds a bit grandfather-ish and non-technical, and depending on your field, but genuinely creating and contributing, being yourself and not hiding behind a logo, and persevering, should hopefully help in some aspects to get you and your contribution out there. I'm working on a couple of those, too.

Put stuff on your site that answers people's questions. For example: 'how do I add a random image to my homepage'. Provide the simple answer but suggest there are alternatives. Lead from this to a clear call to action. Google likes to provide solutions to questions so there is a good chance you can rank well for little effort. Don't blog, make these pages core to the site.

It's not a trick, Google has been telling webmasters to do this for years, but it takes a lot of effort to put together a package of well constructed pages and most people just can't be bothered. Which is why those that do reap all the benefits.

I see what you are saying, and if you appear to be a netural web design blog then I can see how this would work. However if you are a web design business, then I'm not so sure how this will increase your backlinks. It is unlikely that you will get any competitors directing traffic away from their site to a competitor even if the information is quality and useful. Blogs and forums will be nofollow, so they won't help. So I just don't understand how these guys can find solid content related backlinks through this technique?

The other point to make is that people need to see your blog first. With the web design industry topics are covered all the time and if you are a new blog who writes about 'how do I add a random image to my homepage' there is no chance you will appear on page one of Google over the established sites that already write about this area. I'm not saying this doesn't work, but it takes a lot of hard work and and a lot of time before you can build enough backlinks to become noticed.

My point was that you don't need backlinks. You can easily rank well for a whole range of keywords without doing any link building. It is hard work but once you get established as a useful source Google will return more often to see what you have published. I've got articles from 10 years ago that still rank highly despite a lot of big names all posting on the same topic.

I guess because backlinks have been fairly easy for me to gain in my line of business that my main focus has been to drive traffic to my homepage and my members pages. However even though I have this advantage doesn't mean I should not have a blog as this would help drive more traffic to my site. I guess just because more reputable sites gain higher levels of traffic for each article they write, doesn't mean there is not enough to go around :)
