Hello all,

I am new to this forum and have come seeking advice! I just finished two BS degrees, neither of which relate to web development. And conveniently I realize now what field I want to work in, web development. I am eager to start learning but have no idea of where to start. I've tried using a free online teaching site but was discouraged because I felt I was not getting what I needed.

 

Questions:

Are there companies out there that hire smart people with no experience and train them? (I just thought about this today, seems rather unrealistic, I know. But also kind of makes sense.)

 

Would you suggest taking 'go at your own pace' online classes?

 

Or will free online sites teach all that one needs to know?

 

I am really just looking for HOW to start. Any advice would be extremely helpful and much appreciated.

"Web development" is a very broad field, do you have any particular area of interest?

 

You'll probably find most people who work in web development are self taught, for the most part. Do a search on these forums as the whole topic of starting out has been discussed many time before That said the things to start with (and learn inside out) are HTML and CSS since these are the foundation of everything on the web, there are 100's of online resources such as HTML Dog which are excellent learning tools for beginners.

 

It's unlikely you'll find any companies willing to teach you the basics, you often find that some larger agencies may be willing to train on more advanced subjects though, if you're lucky!

SharePoint is a big market in the UK, plenty of money in it, would cost you for Microsoft certification then you're golden.

Hi, Web development is an ever evolving field in which you can see a bright future. Try learning HTML5, javascript and CSS on your own. Some companies hire web developer as trainees and pay them after few months of experience.
