Very broad question, but how low would you go in terms of charging for a website? I'm talking a one person business with a really simple CMS (for a blog mostly), approximately 6 pages that are all static.

 

I don't like turning away business, but I feel it's not something worth my while and thinking of passing on it. Should only take a couple of days but (probably answering my own questions) I think my costs are too high for them. If it was a charity, it wouldn't be an issue - even for a friend I'd do it at a low fee but at my discretion when I have full paying clients! (I haven't discussed prices yet, but I sense they may be thinking £100 for the lot (hosting, domain name included. No logo or graphics - they're already supplied).

Hmm, or a £100 you can offer them WP install, theme install (a ready theme), and if you want, you can insert their content, plus logo and graphics.

If you include hosting, it needs to be really cheap - there was one provider that offers £10 a year hosting + domain name, although it's very limited (obviously).

 

But for custom made theme and hosting, domain, etc., I believe £100 is a way too low.

(unless you can do it for 3-4 hours lol)

Thanks for your feedback The hosting might be a stumbling block as I was hoping to use my preferred host but if it keeps the cost down, I'll have to have a look at the cheaper alternatives. I may have to do some wheelin' and dealin' to get some bonuses on top of the fee ;- i.e. their services discounted

 

WordPress might have to be the way forward. Even advising them to setup a WordPress.com site.

Hire an Indian on freelancer or People per Hour, pay them £50, charge the client £150. Profit.

 

Of course I jest but lots of people do it hence the silly low prices of some people on the web. UK based? Yeah right.

The question is how much do you value your time and skills?

 

If you charge, say, £10/hour (supermarket night shift shelf stacking wages), then 2 days @ 7 hours per day will give you £140.

 

A uk domain is say £10 for 2 years, add an hour of your time to register/map to hosting account etc then add £20

 

So that gives a rough total of £160 without any hosting...

 

Watch out because "cheap" clients will take advantage of you, and before you know it you can easily commit yourself to a lot of work and haslle with little to show for it.

 

My advice is to charge a proper price from the outset, draw up a contact that explicity states what work you will undertake, and what work is extra.

Just for anyone curious how this went, I knocked it one the head. In a one word summary: mockery. In a nutshell, 'the next Facebook' for approximately £60 (yes, that works out £20 a day).

 

As you may surmise, I told them to go forth and multiply and have since been working on something for someone who actually lives within the boundaries of society. Thankfully, I didn't get all excited and waste anytime even sketching anything up for the last one. Lesson finally learned.

Well for just £3.50 a day and a bottle of cheap booze you can hire these guys, surely web design is cheaper? lol

It's really interesting how things spiral. The initial concept was indeed a simple CMS with 6 pages or so. How it went from that to being such a ridiculous project, I'll never really comprehend. I sometimes really hate how Wikipedia culture makes people experts on everything and nothing. I would say you wouldn't believe our conversation, but then again, I think we've all had that experience one too many times. Glad I found this all out now rather than down the line. Now I can concentrate on making some actual money and writing that novel lol.

Personally i just charge $75 a day not including weekends when im off so a months work would be $1500 and so on but i know some that charge $75 an hour which is a little excessive i believe.

I'm quite surprised. I thought you would be more the latter, well, not as much as that as that is pretty high. Do you do this full time at this rate or is this in addition to your other work?

 

I've been reading about a few developers who charge £300 a day. That would be nice, but I'd be expecting a heck of a lot if that was me paying them

Well i currently don't have a huge amount of bills so i can get by doing it for $75 a day and no i pretty much do web development full time

That's pretty cool to have that flexibility. Sometimes I think I'd prefer daily work than projects here there and everywhere. Certainly taught me how to manage money better than ever

I have been considering what to charge as I do web design on top of my normal job, I have a web design where i have only charged £90 but thats for a friend but I think £10 to £15 a hour would not be an unreasonable rate to charge when starting out I do not advertise my charges on my website as I would generally give a estimate once talking to the client. but I would charge for hosting etc on top as if they want a decent website they have to pay the right money and we do have skills which they don't and they are paying for a service at the end of the day. Its like with the trades they charge alot because they have put the time and effort and often invested a lot of money to get their skills.
