March 15, 200917 yr Sorry I realise this post is more to find people who are on twitter but I have been wondering for ages, what is twitter exactly and what are the benefits. From the little research I have done (not much mind you) it appears to be similar to the "what is my status" app on facebook. Is this correct. Could one use it to inform the world when you update your site? Would a search engine find these posts and would that in turn results in "good" links to ones site? If this is all totally of post, I appologise in advance:D

March 15, 200917 yr Me I couldn't live without twitter these days, use it much more than Facebook or any other social networking site. @caraewilton Twitter IS effectively facebook statuses with the added bonuses of being able to easily post shortened URLs & links to photos (there is twitpic for uploading photos if you don't use flickr etc). It is a social networking site, so the benefits depend on how many people you are following and how many follow you and also who those people are. For web dev/des folk it's excellent because so many of the top web des/dev people/studios are on twitter and regularly share their news/ideas/projects. It's a great way to find out what's going on in the world of the web and keep up with it. In addition it will help you get wider exposure by being able to post blog updates to all your followers, request diggs etc. It's also fun, friendly, and different to other social networks because you are NOT expected to read every tweet or reply to everyone who replies to you. It is also pretty much always public unless you Direct Message (DM) someone and so it feels quite open as well. --QUICK GUIDE TO TWITTER-- There are effectively 4 parts to twitter: - Statuses (your 140 character messages to the world) - @replies - statuses which reply to other users by putting the @ sign before their username - if you put it at the beginning only people who follow both you and the person you replied to can see the message normally. If you put it in the middle all your followers will see the message. - DMs - direct messages are private 140 char messages to a particular user - #hashtags - hashtagging is used to tag specific phrases, you can then use twitter search to view all messages with that hashtag in e.g. #ihatedolly. If you use one of the many twitter applications/tools it will most likely automatically turn hashtags into links to the search results. Some people have built interesting applications around particular hashtags to aggregate results and show interesting data, like this one that popped up during the recent ridiculous weather: #uksnow. The brilliance of twitter is the ease of access to masses of interesting data. There are hundreds of websites, apps and scripts which allow interesting use of twitter in some way- be it a desktop app like Tweetdeck that allows you to organise and keep up to date with your tweets or data aggregators like the #uksnow aggregator or tweeturls which is like digg only urls posted to twitter. Hope this explains it! Now everyone get on twitter and join the fun! P.S. don't forget the additional fun that is following celebs via twitter! Stephen Fry is top dawg on twitter, and there are other folk like Russell Brand, John Cleese, Jimmy Carr and Philip Schofield who regularly have interesting & amusing things to say!

March 15, 200917 yr Am I the only one who just doesn't 'get' twitter? I joined a long time ago but found it difficult to find anything interesting to read/people to follow etc and ended up deleting my account. I feel like I should be a part of it but I don't really know why @Eris thanks for the quick guide (perhaps I'll sign up again and give it another whirl)
March 16, 200917 yr I'm sure there was a thread with twitter user-names sometime last year...? But here's mine again unsurprisingly it's shubox I'm happy to follow all who follow me - after all it's a social networking tool and not a celebrity stalking tool as it sometimes seems to be these days.

March 16, 200917 yr OMG I don't know who any of these people are! Well i do know who those people are! Stephen Fry for one is a legend and Jimmy Carr would be a goldmine of humor! I've been trying to decide if i want to bother signing up for yet another social networking site, the only real reason i would is to follow Gabe from Penny Arcade, beyond that though i have no reason, i'm pretty tired of facebook for that matter, i only enjoy Mixi as it's a Japanese site like facebook but it gives me a reason to keep studying that damn language!
March 16, 200917 yr I dont have twitter, if someone can convince why I should have one then i'll get one. And I'm not hard to convince. I do have a question though, how do you follow someones twitter? Do you get an email every time they post something? Because I'll go mad.
March 16, 200917 yr Read my little guide up there ^ somewhere. You follow someone by finding their profile (via a link on their site or a search) and clicking "follow". Twitter is entirely self-contained so you don't get an email everytime they make a post. As I said in my guide: YOU ARE NOT EXPECTED TO READ EVERY TWEET BY EVERYONE YOU ARE FOLLOWING!!!!!!! You can dip in when you feel like it, read as much as you feel like reading, follow conversations if you want to and ignore the rest. There's also the favourite feature so you can save stuff you like for later
June 11, 200917 yr I knew a thread like this existed! Well, what kind of web designer geek would I be without a twitter account right? Better late than never... I've added you all. Let's see what the fuss is all about! whoops, I should add my own also! LYKC on Twitter
June 13, 200917 yr Ohboy... So I've just joined Twitter, mainly to stop anyone else getting my username... Not sure if I'll use it much (my opinion several posts up still stands!), but hey, sometimes one just has to see what all the fuss is about.
