If it's a newspaper, the main focus should be your news stories, not your excessive and overbearing amount of sponsors and advertising. Currently your content is in a tiny spot, lost in the centre, surrounded by flashing adverts. As a start, how about adding a feature box in the top-left corner where you will have your main news stories, and then build the other stories and adverts around this?

Know your portfolio inside out. What is your work flow? Where do you get inspiration? What blogs do you follow? Research what technologies/software they use and swot up on them. Look at their past clients/work and give your opinion. Good luck!

Past the halfway point I'd say. It's quite nice, definitely an improvement over the old site, but could do with more polish. As navarrod pointed out, work on your typography as the titles don't sit well with the body text. It has some nice touches like the slideshow and the rollover states on each module, so well done on that. The colour scheme and griddy layout though seem very harsh, try breaking it up with more images that are blended into the background or something.

Black and white themes can look very slick if executed correctly. The devil is in the details (typography, links, white-space etc). Take aboard the above advice, get some inspiration from Hongkiat, and play around with PS till you find something you like.

This is it. Sometimes we just peter through life, steady-eddy style, when really we should constantly be asking ourselves what our passions are and dedicating a lot more time trying to fulfill them.

I wouldn't rule out agencies completely. An agency landed me my current full time position, and all my other fulltime positions for that matter! A lot of timewasters from other agencies in that time for sure, but you just need to know how to spot a 'troll' and one that genuinely has a job there for you Suspicious activity: if they ask you for your previous colleagues' 'references', if they ask about previous salary, if they are vague with job description, location etc, if they don't have much information on the company, if they ask too many 'fluff' questions, they're probably a troll Keep going, don't give up, you'll get your break

If these suggestions don't work, I'd consider modifying your design slightly, or cutting out the images flush to the edges to make it look like the whitespace is part of the design.

Try adding a style="line-height:0;" to each <td> element that contains an image Also, make sure you delete ALL whitespace before and after a HTML tag. As a test, instead of adding a line after each bit of code, do it all in one line, with no spaces e.g. <table> <tr> <td> use <table><tr><td> See if that works LYKC

I think the key is adapting to your target audience. If they are on low budgets, create a low budget solution such as templates, which you can reuse. If they are strapped for time, manage everything from the domain, to hosting, to content, to design for them so they need not worry. If you feel they don't care about a website, improve your sales/marketing skills and talk in terms they do understand i.e. an online shop will earn you £xxx extra a month! How about changing your angle? There's loads of agencies in London. Apply for a contract, get in touch with them for freelance overflow work. Or just create templates and themes and sell them. How about blogging? What businesses are you targeting for web design? I'm pretty sure you haven't exhausted all opportunities. London is where it's happening! I'm from London too
