You shouldn't just have WYSIWYG software. I use NotePad++.

Notepad,,,, do use the coding side of dreamweaver sometimes for a quickie edit. (came in my CS package) & does have its uses like file management....

 

But about 80% in notepad (its really how you learn to code)

Admittidly, I do use dreamweaver. But I do know my way around CSS and HTML. Its more a tool that helps me see whats happening whilst I edit the code!

 

I tried expression, but I'm loyal to the overpriced adobe stuff

 

When I was younger I used Frontpage and Webplus.

I use Dreamweaver CS4. (Code view of course!) I would never use a WYSIWYG.

Used to be excusively a Dreamweaver (Code View) user, but although I have Dreamweaver CS4 on my MacBook. I only ever use Coda as it is a great app.

I use Textmate (not on your list but very widespread) - I am planning to give coda a try in the near future

It surprises me how many people use DreamWeaver purely to switch between two different views, I just have the file opened up in Firefox and press F5, easy as pie .

Me too, never understood that one...

I'm starting to lean more towards Komodo IDE.

I liked Komodo actually, it's got a lot of nice extensions too.

 

Talking of extensions, the thing that bugged me when looking for an editor was that they would always have most of the features I wanted, but not all - and loads I couldn't care less about.

 

My wishlist is:

Project folders (not explorer folders, because it is often important to keep certain files separate for security reasons, so it's nice to bring them together for work). PSPad has this, Notepad++ doesn't appear to.

 

MySQL Connection...and querying (you get this in Netbeans, Aptana, PhpED and PhpEdit.)

 

Debugging: Preferablt easy to configure (I tried getting DBG to work in Notepad++, but it kept on flaking out, so I just rely on Xdebug for PHP scripting.)

 

Code Explorer: PSPad has it - list of variables that link directly to the instance in the script

 

Code folding would be nice.

 

All the free or low price editors have one or two of these features, but the only ones that have them all are in the £200 range! Lightweight editors are often full of cack like drop down menus or toolbars for inserting <h> tags and the like, or browser buttons.

You should at least give the demo of Coda a try. It's extremely simple and streamlined considering the amount of features it packs. Using it really does give you a sense of being a 'Pro Designer/Developer'.

Textmate has more at present that I use, although the new coda had support for bundles (I believe) and more are being developed all the time. I think eventually I will switch. I use Transmit (from panic, the same company that make coda) and it's nice little program.

I also use Transmit. It's one of the best looking FTP apps i've ever used. Coda has Transmit integrated into the app itself which is really useful and because of the fact Coda strips out all of the bloat other apps such as Dreamweaver include, enabling you to focus on what matters, it makes coding a slightly easier job to do.

 

As others have previously stated, it really comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. However, one thing I do know is, no matter what others here say about Macs and what they can/can't do, I know that if it weren't for my Mac, I would not likely have access to apps as beautiful as some that companies such as Panic create.

I have no idea but would guess PC - as mac owners are in the vast minority.

Although in the design community I would wager mac uptake vs PC is much larger than any other sector (in comparison).

I havn't been doing CSS that long, but I am using Dreamweaver and really like the predictive coding and other great features, I havn't really tried much else to be honest, but I think if you are happy with something, then you should stick with it.

 

If there is enough hype surrounding a product then I'll always give it a try, but so far Dreamweaver seems pretty industry standard for a novice like me

@ Scott: isn't Notpad just like Notpad++ (Notepad++ just a little more advanced) .. I always look at them two as the same thing !

 

@SEOLover: Me and you are in the same boat then, cause I'm just starting to learn CSS too. I use Dreamweaver and Expression Web > I find them both very similar to work with when dealing with CSS.

Damn I've just checked out Screenshots of Zend and the interface is EXACTLY like Eclipse !!!!

 

I do some Java programming and I use Eclipse for that (currently in the process of learning Java)
