Why you suggest not using the site builders, IMO they are handy for people like me who doesnt know much about computers

dantiger88 reacted to fisicx in Dont know if this is the right place to be. but here goes. need help building my websiteHi Dug
All I see is a blank page so can't comment on your site.
The reason wordpress didn't work is because it's not something you can just download and run in your PC. IT needs properly installing and connecting to a database.
If you want a site that works properly don't use wix, weebly or any other sitebuilder.

dantiger88 reacted to dug2016 in Dont know if this is the right place to be. but here goes. need help building my websiteStarted of few weeks ago wanting to find somewhere so i could build my own website with not much computer knowledge. Was advised to use wordpress but just couldnt download it right and didnt even get started with that site. Next up was weebley! I was having mixed success and was happy enough with what i had untill it came to setting pics beside each other. There was just to much messing about for a beginner as myself so threw the towel in and started using wix. At first i was scratching my head not knowing what was what but soon learned enough to get me going.
I choose the handyman template because liked the look of it and its sort of my line of work. Im a handyman/small builder and this template was perfect for me. I have all my pages kitted out with pics and txtd, and the pics on my home page are linked into the pages i want them to take me. Above each pic, i have a small box with txt in it, example plastering, stone work etc.... It looks perfect IMO when its on pc mode, but as soon as i change to mobile mode and scroll down past my main header, im now getting all the small boxs with the txt in it one on top of one other! When i scroll down even more, there is my linked pics all stacked on top of one another like the txtd boxes above. What i was hoping for is that when scrolling down, that each txtd box stays in place above each picture.
Heres the site so you can see for yourselves. Ive now hit a brick wall. Been trying to work it out all day.

dantiger88 reacted to Jack in Notepad++ or Visual Studio for Websites and Apps?Nah it's just an editor that works well with .NET, it also has some really powerful Node debugging tools. There's a games developer over here that builds primarily JS games, and he swears by it.

dantiger88 reacted to Jack in Notepad++ or Visual Studio for Websites and Apps?Visual Studio Code (not the standard Visual Studio) is actually pretty decent, I know a few developers that use it.
-
I'm a little confused by your question - what sort of apps are you wanting to create?
You can indeed create websites using visual studio, their used to be seperate IDEs for desktop, mobile and web apps but a quick look tells me this is no longer the case with the new version.

Hi,
I am wanting to learn Web Design and also to be able to create Universal Windows Apps. I know you can create them with HTML5 and CSS with Javascript to make them interactive.
My question is , is it preferable to learn HTML5/CSS and use Notepad++ to write the websites and then use Visual Studio for the apps?
Is it even possible to write websites using visual studio?

I also think it is mistaken to generalise employers as a whole. You will be the right employee for some - but for others you will not.

I am afraid that introversion is often mistaken for arrogance.

dantiger88 reacted to NullDrone in What do employers look for in an interview? Most interviews that I have been to seemed ok when I went in, but I think that I have without knowing it messed it up, I think a lot of the problems I have to comes down to values, I value someone who is competent and can do their job, I find "attitude" as secondary, I'm not saying that it's ok to have a stinking bad attitude, I don't have that, but I don't like to come across as someone with an overly good attitude, that it's fake.
I remember when I went for an interview at siemens before, even though I have a HNC in electical engineering, I wasn't given the job and remember that someone who was unskilled was actually offered the job, the employer wanted someone that was "enthusiastic".
I just find that most of these employers must be full of ****, and to actually be accepted into a job you have to be just as full of **** as them, I don't come across like a grump but I can't put on a fake smile and when seeing it, it makes me cringe. I have really strong values of being real, most people would look at you and put on a fake smile, but too many are like this that they aren't at all competent. I don't say or show that I think they are though.
Maybe the world suffers from the Dunning Krueger effect, where stupid people that don't have a clue will think their so smart, but the ones who lack confidence are usually the more competent people. I notice this, many stupid people will value things like loudness and enthusiasm, fake smiles and "positive attitude", these to me are really trashy values, because just for example that guy that went in rejected the job offer, whereas I actually wanted it, he may be naturally more enthusiastic but that doesn't mean he actually wants it.
Maybe there was other factors that came into it, like answering the questions correctly, or asking the right questions, I actually thought I did well, but still not given the job.
To me it also seems like where ever you go, people have this kind of anti intellectual mindset, they downplay a degree as much as they can, "Oh it's just a piece of paper", well money is a piece of paper so I guess it wouldn't be a big deal for me to print it right? Or "all these people that come out of university think they know it all.", but in reality many do in theory know much more than those who do what's natural to them, they should be more competent, they lack experience but in theory they are way further than anyone who's just been working on a random job. I find this a lot, especially when I tried to get a job as an electrician, in a way I think deep down they don't like me because I seem like a smart ass. I'm good with money, I'm hard working and people think I’m a nice guy when they get to know me, but it probably doesn't show at first. Anything theoretical they will downplay, when I asked them what else do I need to know for the job? They would say a few things that weren't really hard.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-intellectualism
I just wonder, what do you think could be the problem? I've been to many interviews but I didn't actually land a job on any, the first place I worked didn't even give me an interview, but he thought I was a hard worker and the second place was agency work, I rarely give a good impression, but then again not much strikes me as many people not liking me, I would say most people just don't give a damn what i'm about, my interests, being realistic. I don't think I have confidence problems, it doesn't really bother me whether people like me or not, I just think that's the way it's always been, but around people who are like minded they can see all the positive traits in me. Maybe it's an introvert thing, the factory workers were talking behind my back and at the restaurant I worked, I found that many (without starting anything with them) would talk badly about me, a lot of smart and quiet people have this problem, they rarely talk badly about people but are usually on the receiving end from people that just hate them for nothing.
What do you think? Is it that, or is it something else that they are looking for? I just have no clue what exactly the employers are looking for other than the skills they are asking for in the job description, I try to research the company as much as possible. I think I have a somewhat good awareness what i'm coming across like, most of the jobs i've applied for won't accept me usually down to lack of experience, but if it's an unskilled job it will probably be that I don't seem like a really nice person at first. I am quite quiet at first, but after about a month I start to open up with people, the factory job was like that, I was really quiet at first, but when I got used to it, I can come out a little bit (sometimes too much).

dantiger88 reacted to AndyM8 in Planning toolsI'm using Invision for mock-ups and it's awesome. Now you can easily integrate this with the Slack, so you get instant notifications, previews of changes, and you can click through to comment—speeding up team design review. I'm not sure they're planning to add some live chat plug-ins (like all those e-commerce chat web-apps), but if yes this'll be perfect.

dantiger88 reacted to BrowserBugs in Planning toolsI would second pen and paper followed by wire frame, even some of my more intensive developments start this way, sectioning code modules into lumps and working out what would be better as a reusable function and what should stand alone. The only reason you'd need to present something a little neater is for clients, but unclear if the 'application-type-thing' in the OP is a pet project or one for a client.
-
dantiger88 reacted to rhubarblover in Planning toolsI'm not completely sure what I need, so can't really do any effective searching. Thought someone here might be able to help me.
I am planning an application-type-thing. Currently I'm using a text file detailing various scenarios based on user interaction, but it doesn't seem like the best way of doing it, and I have the problem where a tree of events would lead to one event that also happens at an earlier point... if that makes any sense at all. I don't want to have to type out everything that happens after that point, again - if you see what I mean?
So I thought maybe there's a program that helps with this sort of thing.
If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know

In a way that you don't have to think about how this or that will resize or take browsers into account.
*ha, ha, there might be some problems I still am not aware of like different printers requirements, colours, etc lol hope not
