I'm not completely sure what I need, so can't really do any effective searching. Thought someone here might be able to help me.

I am planning an application-type-thing. Currently I'm using a text file detailing various scenarios based on user interaction, but it doesn't seem like the best way of doing it, and I have the problem where a tree of events would lead to one event that also happens at an earlier point... if that makes any sense at all. I don't want to have to type out everything that happens after that point, again - if you see what I mean?

So I thought maybe there's a program that helps with this sort of thing.

If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know

Hi I would have approached this by making various wireframes to illustrate the flow.

There are plenty of wireframing tools, free or paid, so there are many options.

If you want static wireframes, you can use everything, from pen and paper to Adobe AI. Dynamic wireframes are also an option and they help prototyping the project better.

Invision - http://www.invisionapp.com/ - it's a design collaboration app, and it works great for visualising the flow.

I would second pen and paper followed by wire frame, even some of my more intensive developments start this way, sectioning code modules into lumps and working out what would be better as a reusable function and what should stand alone. The only reason you'd need to present something a little neater is for clients, but unclear if the 'application-type-thing' in the OP is a pet project or one for a client.

I tend to use Sketch for everything, it's just as good for wireframes as full mock-ups.

 

I've started using these UX kits too http://uxkits.com/products/website-flowchart-and-sitemap to show the user flow. This is a great process to go through but you need content first to structure them correctly. Typically you might have seen something similar using post-it notes, which a lot of agencies still use.

I'm using Invision for mock-ups and it's awesome. Now you can easily integrate this with the Slack, so you get instant notifications, previews of changes, and you can click through to comment—speeding up team design review. I'm not sure they're planning to add some live chat plug-ins (like all those e-commerce chat web-apps), but if yes this'll be perfect.

Ahh, wireframing... I'll search for that. Unfortunately most of these tools don't seem to support Linux Oh well. Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried using paper but it just turned into a massive mess that didn't fit on the page. I need things to be tidy...

 

Oh, and this is just a personal project.
