Just a quick update on the 1and1 debacle - after nearly 3 weeks I suggested to my client that we get the domain changed via Nominet. Done in less than an hour! At a small cost, which admittedly should not be needed but at least it's done.
 
 
Did you get it moved yet? It was one excuse after another with them.

Yes, happened on 22nd November at some point, not bad for 1and1 only 7 days and 3 phone calls.

Don't usually use Windows but got a computer for my daughter/husband/ie testing etc. with Windows 8. The three of us just stare in disbelief. bears no resemblance to either earlier versions of Windows or Mac.

I'm shamelessly addicted and can no longer write properly without them. Have to fight to keep them out of work emails.

Can't complain clear skies here. Although I have to block out the light son I don't get reflections on my monitor.

Lost count of how many times I've ran into wordpress problems, and not being one to give up spent hours if not days trying to solve something that you would think was fairly simple (can't think of an example off the top of my head but I'm sure another one will come along sooner rather than later!).

You're using html 5 markup with the doctype XHTML 1.0 Transitional, so might be better to change the doctype.
Have a look in the html validator, it will give you some hints as to where your markup isn't quite right here and there.
 
It's great that you've come this far with the design, I've seen a lot worse from aspiring designers!

It's a good choice. I'd imagine that size/resolution is going to be a desktop 'standard' for a while yet. Enjoy

I'm comfortable with 1440 x 900 (I think my monitor is 16" but it's an Acer), everything looks okay to me.
I'm using it for almost 2 years now..

after a week or so you wont be able to ever go back to a 1024x768

if i was you i would get a 22"-27" monitor at 1920*1080, you will get use to it very quickly. At work i have a 24" monitor flanked by two 22" monitors and at home i have my 27" thunderbolt display at something like 2500*1300 what is great for developing

i think you'll soon get used to - at homei still have 1280 x 1024 but at work i have 27" imac...
 
i wouldnät get less than 24" while you're buying

1920x1080 is full "1080p" HD quality. They're normally quite cheap, and allow you to natively watch high quality video too. They are quite wide, however.

Using a UK web host will also give your website better search rankings if its targeted at a UK audience, better site speed for its audience, and if you go with a decent host, then yes, tech support can be better, but as with all things in the service industry, you will get what you pay for..
 
We have a lot of designers/developers like yourself who prefer to let the host do the support so they can concentrate on the stuff they enjoy doing without getting bogged down with setting up email accounts, forgotten passwords etc... Wordpress is extremely impressive too, we recently switched to it instead of a hand coded html site too.

You'll find that all us old school types are mostly self taught - I'm lucky because I got going in the late 1990's when the internet was taking off and learning yourself was the only option!
 
While there are numerous teaching aids around the online ones tend to be better because they are generally more up to date - what's taught in classrooms is often 1-2 years behind the time (which is a lifetime in internet years). I think the classroom can teach you a lot of theory related stuff (eg design theory) but there's never any substitute in getting stuck in doing real world stuff.
 
Web design and development takes a relatively short time to pick up, but a lifetime to master. As they say... practice, practice, practice!

I actually started learning HTML/CSS in high school (2005) and then it kind of got away from me. But once I went to college I picked up the books once again and taught myself everything I know.
 
I went to school for visual communications in advertising because it was the closest thing they had to web (with one web design class and one flash class, both of which the instructors told students to come for me with their questions). I should have been the one paid lol.
 
I continue to learn new abilities as I continue to work at my job. For example, I learned MailChimp, Wordpress, Metro Publisher (which sucks!), Adwords, Analytics, and so on. You don't necessarily need to be certified by going to school for X.
 
My advice to you is to join Lynda.com because they have oodles of courses to learn pretty much whatever you want!

I went to uni to do Media Technology but I think you do the most of your learning actually working on projects and working your way through books/tutorials etc, unless you have someone you can learn from, an experienced designer/developer in your current place of employment for example.
 
Over the past few years I have taught myself ExpressionEngine, JavaScript and jQuery from books and online, my next jaunt will be in PHP and MySQL as although I understand how these technologies work I wouldn't say I could actually code in them.
 
I think a course might be worthwhile, but I guess that depends on what course it is an how much it is going to cost you etc. I think most courses are probably worthwhile but not all, and it would all depend on how hands on that course was that would make my decision for me if I were in your situation.
 
For now, I am going to stick to books and websites like Codecademy to see me through.
