Did you have a contract in place? If so, what did this contract say? Was there any mention at all of the PSD? If not then he hasn't got a leg to stand on.

You should just be 90% honest with the guy - just explain that he paid you for a website, and not for the original PSD files. He may get shirty with you - but explain to him that the code you provided and the web-optimized images are what he paid for, not PSD files.

If he really wants the PSD file, then charge him for it.

Worst case scenario, you lose this guy as a client for 3 more sites - not the end of the world

I would have used a different platform rather than wordpress.

I would have used socialengine.net script and hacked hell out of it to get rid of all the coding that is not needed as its a very heavy script.

I have done a few websites like your one, you have said and i have charged around £2000 for!

Price up would be like this.

    Socialengine script = £170
Ripping the guts out of it and optimising it = £500
Custom plugins for this between £1000 - £1500

The script is only £170 but without doing a microsoft on its ass (Vista - Windows 7 trick) its not a great script.

Total amount of time would be about 80-100 hours.

    Hi Leyah,

My name's Chris and I like good music. I'm looking for a promoter to arrange acts to play in my living room every night for free, because I'm averse to paying DJs and promoters a fair wage for their skills despite needing to earn a living wage for myself.

I will pay their expenses and treat them to a couple of hours of free design occasionally.

If you want your DJs to be heard and appreciated by me, please reply.

    Many thanks,

    Chris

Don't forget that print and web are two very different things. For instance, if you were to produce a 4 page brochure for print it may take you 20 hours, a corresponding web site could easily take you 40/60/80 hours after you've taken all processes into account. Web design is more that pretty pictures

For any web site project you might find it helpful to break the processes down a bit, eg:

    1. Consultation
    2. Planning
    3. Wireframing/content presentation
    4. Custom programming
    5. HTML/CSS coding
    6. CMS integtration?
    7. Creating graphics
    8. Content copywriting
    9. Testing
    10. Sign off

Now, as a graphic designer, you'd normally be the person to do item 7 after the web designer has told you what he/she needs. However, as you're going to be in charge of your own projects, it's likely that you'll probably be picking up lots of the other processes and outsourcing the bits you can't do.

So what you need to do is work out how long each process stage will take, for example:

    1. Consultation - 8 hours
    2. Planning - 4 hours
    3. Wireframing/content presentation - 8 hours
    4. Custom programming - 0 hours
    5. HTML/CSS coding - 8 hours
    6. CMS integration? - 8 hours
    7. Creating graphics - 8 hours
    8. Content copywriting - 8 hours
    9. Testing - 2 hours
    10. Sign off - 2 hours

    Total = 56 hours
So if you were charging £50/hour you'd be asking for £2800. The stuff you're outsourcing you'd need to get prices for so you can adjust your hours/rates accordingly.

    Does that help?

I agree. If you just asked how can i improve, i would have said a few things.

The reason why you got shot down is because this is a web design forum for professionals and when people come on here expecting us to invest our expensive time for nothing it ticks us off.

You need to respect that we all have families and mortgages and what little time we have we will not be doing it for nothing.

Also we have these threads 5-6 times a week asking us to work for nothing, thinking that we will be stupid enough to invest in nothing.

If its a great thing you have, go to the bank and then come back and state i want to hire someone.

When making iphone websites i always use 320 wide, height doesnt matter as it scrolls.

So that it fits to all mobile devices i use this neat bit of code within the header

    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0;" />

which scales it to the width of the device

The reason i do 320px wide is so it is compatible with older models.

    Hi guys

Just thought i would share my latest tutorial again

It shows how you can make your website design look a little better in photoshop in just 5 minutes.

This is not for the advanced web designers but it can still add tips.
It takes a normal basic web 2.0 website design and just adds a little professionalism to it.

    Here is the tutorial

    Hope you like it!

Drop downs are easy with css.

    here is an example:

    CSS

    #nav{ background-color: black; height: 40px; width: 300px; margin-left: -150px; position: absolute; left: 50%; top: 50px; } #nav ul{ width:100%; float:left; margin:0px; padding:0px; } #nav li{ width:100px; float:left; text-align:center; margin:0px; list-style-type: none; position: relative; /* This has made it relative so the absolute on the li ul is set */ background-color: black; height: 20px; padding-top: 10px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 0px; } #nav li a{ width:100px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal; color: #FFF; text-decoration: none; } #nav li a:visited{ width:100px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal; color: #FFF; text-decoration: none; } #nav li a:hover, #nav li :hover{ /* This sets the hover for getting ready to make the ul li ul available */ width:100px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal; color: #FFF; text-decoration: none; background-color: #333; } #nav li ul{ width:100px; background-color: black; left: 0px; top: 40px; position: absolute; visibility: hidden; /* This has made it invisible */ } #nav li:hover > ul{ visibility: visible; /* This makes the ul li ul visible*/ } #nav li ul li{ width:100px; float:left; list-style-type: none; } #nav li ul li a{ width:100px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal; color: #FFF; text-decoration: none; } #nav li ul li a:visited{ width:100px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal; color: #FFF; text-decoration: none; } #nav li ul lia:hover,{ width:100px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal; color: white; text-decoration: none; background-color: #333; }

    Html

    <div id="nav"> <ul> <li><a href="#">Page 1</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Title 1</a></li> <li><a href="#">Title 2</a></li> <li><a href="#">Title 3</a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#">Page 2</a></li> <li><a href="#">Page 3</a></li> </ul> </div>

Hope this helps matey. This has no javascript so will work in all major browsers etc apart from the float left function which you may want to include inline rule as well which will make it work on older versions.

    The reason why!

Beacuse indians from india are ringing companies within the UK and selling them websites fro just £300 so we are having to charge a little less beacuse people are thinking why are we so much more!

I had a client only the other week saying to me why did i charge £3000 for her website when an indian rang her offering the same for just £700.

I stated its beacuse there house and cost of living is about £3000 a year out there where mine is £25000 here!

In each admin panel, I would call yoursite.com/serviceupdate.php?site_id=214 on page load. I would store my service updates in a database table and query with $_GET['site_id']. In my own interface for creating service updates, I would use checkboxes to determine the scope of each service update (i.e. whether it applies to one, all, or some of my clients). You could also provide a "dismiss" link for clients once they have dealt with the update, or even link them directly to a payment gateway on your own server that dismisses the bills on checkout.

i think the content is more important than the design.

Design is good to sell to client for the first few seconds of viewing but the content keeps them there and leads to sales. Also a major factor within the search engine world.

I vote make it a dedicated category!
