So, in my area, there are about half a dozen web design businesses, all sole traders, including me. I want to grow my business. So I was thinking - tentatively - of contacting them to see if they'd be interested in us working together.

How to formalise this though? Possible structures could be to work as a cooperative, or set up a partnership. Do any of you have any thoughts on this?

There's no right or wrong way to "formalise" these sort of arrangements, it really depends what suits both parties. I'd make contact first to test the water, and if someone is interested discuss it to find what might work.

That is a good thought indeed... it is beneficial for all to work together and share resources. But who owns the client is most important. You wouldn't like to share your clients with others, and if you do so, then your competitors will contact your clients directly.

Decide on a big project or a startup and then work together on that project like a partnership. It should be worth your while.

Oh, yeah, my idea was to possibly just start a new business as a partnership. Or invite others to become partners in my business. Just wondering whether a partnership is the way to go or setup a cooperative or some other legal entity.

Not sure of all the legal entanglements and liability issues. But always go for limited liability

How would the work get allocated? What happens if one of the partners fails to deliver or produces sub-standard work? Who would be the MD of the business?

Whilst it sounds like a great idea on paper, the practicalies of running such a partnership are fraught with difficulties.

True...All partnerships have their ups and down....I am sure you will find a way to make it work.
