January 4, 201610 yr Im sure this is going to be a very long thread.... but I'll get things started; "There isn't much money in this job, but after this one I'm going to be able to offer much more work". As a one man band I used to fall for this every time.... and I can guarantee pretty much every single time a customer says this, they are going to be hard work....and you are never going to get any serious work from them. Nowadays I have a standard reply... "great news... because on your second project we will be able to give you a loyalty discount".
January 4, 201610 yr Clients giving you "advice" along with the job should raise some red flags. : Client: "I've heard of this fantastic framework/theme/API/development tool, and I would really like you to use it on our project because it does wonders for SEO and is dead easy to use. You will be able to design a fantastic product for us in no time." You: "If it is that easy to use why do you need to hire me then?" Client:"Well, we need someone with your skills to do a few modifications, because the product (out of the box) does not fully meet our requirements." Just about everyone raves about Wordpress, so we recently had to start building sites using it, otherwise we would simply lose work. It's a real shame, if it doesn't have an 'open source' license then it's not even considered, and you lose the tender. The funny thing is, once people start using commercial plugins with WP, like Gravity Forms, and ACF, surely the license of your install changes, that's how I understand it anyway. I'm hoping systems like Grav start getting more momentum, everything takes forever in Wordpress. Especially advanced searching and filtering, that's an absolute pain.

January 5, 201610 yr My favorite are the clients who cannot take "what you want is a bad idea" for an answer. They want what they want - period. And yet what they DON'T want is to follow your terms (contract, down payment, minimum # of pages, giving of hosting account info so you can do your job properly etc..), and yet they phrase it like they are doing you a favor my hring you over someone else. What? Mindboggeling when no other client to date has had this thought process.
