February 12, 201412 yr Another one for the list - lets add a flag, along with the translation flags, however we don't need the translation. Let's just have the flag, so people of this country don't feel ignored That's a fantastic idea. I think I'll suggest that next time. I'm sick of ACTUALLY making things translatable. To hell with gettext calls! Got a client switching to tso with their migration service - um, sketchy at best, looks like I'm providing the support yet again Don't think I'd want sketchy migration service of all things. One of those things best done properly or not at all.
February 12, 201412 yr Walking out of work, on my lunch break today and looking forward to a KFC. Only went and slipped on a grass verge and caked in mud. The lads wet themselves laughing and I now have a very side/back whenever I move. Litterally cannot move and my boss still wanted me in work. Had to go in not being able to move without yelping pain. +1 for tramadol! Edited February 12, 201412 yr by jamesosix
February 12, 201412 yr We haven't had electricity since 3 o'clock. It just came back on and I just managed to answer a few emails. Quite scary as the winds are really strong here and it feels like our house will be blown away any minute now! Hope to get on with some work before / in case the electricity goes off again
February 12, 201412 yr Don't think I'd want sketchy migration service of all things. One of those things best done properly or not at all. Great idea, mantis, in fact I did what they asked for and put a flag with a tooltip saying "No translation available". I wanted to put "Translator says no..." but decided client wouldn't appreciate my sense of humour lol

With a client ;P iPad's are safe, but not the WiFi!

Great idea, mantis, in fact I did what they asked for and put a flag with a tooltip saying "No translation available". I wanted to put "Translator says no..." but decided client wouldn't appreciate my sense of humour lol Lol, you could even translate "No translation available" for each flag. Then they'd be certain to understand I went to a meeting today and had the same thing. Try doing some web related work with no power. With a client ;P iPad's are safe, but not the WiFi! That happened to me once too. I thought I was clever and well prepared by bringing my iPad then I remembered... It did come in useful as I pointed to it a lot while trying to explain responsive web design. We should all get one of these http://mashable.com/2013/11/06/pedal-power-cycling-generator/
February 13, 201412 yr That happened to me once too. I thought I was clever and well prepared by bringing my iPad then I remembered... It did come in useful as I pointed to it a lot while trying to explain responsive web design. I did kind of save the downtime with some interpretive dance a few jokes, but thankfully the conversation flowed. I know we all rely on the internet for so many things other than work, but losing power too!... phew! Still, I want the pedal power feature - a work out at the same time!
February 13, 201412 yr If every desk in the office had peddle power do you think it would power the kettle, fridge, microwave, tv, pc's, and wifi?

I know we all rely on the internet for so many things other than work, but losing power too!... phew! Still, I want the pedal power feature - a work out at the same time! I'll have to remember the interpretive dance next time. That might be just enough to shock my clients into submission. If every desk in the office had peddle power do you think it would power the kettle, fridge, microwave, tv, pc's, and wifi? I'm not sure how much electricity they actually produce but I imagine powering my kettle alone would keep me pretty busy.
February 13, 201412 yr I'll have to remember the interpretive dance next time. That might be just enough to shock my clients into submission. Ha ha! Yeah - it certainly is an unexpected curve ball. They'll either laugh or call the police. Either way, it's a pro-active result
February 18, 201412 yr Having the worst day.Transferring a domain from our current provider requires a degree in computer science. I have to do a bunch of paperwork for nothing and the client wants it now basically. They won't let me just update the DNS records to their new ones, and transfer it once everything's ready, it's all very confusing. I have email chains from 3 companies, and none of them understands anything. I can't wait until this is over, but I think it could be a while, such a waste of time. Update This doesn't make any sense. I don't have the new DNS records, they do. They wanted the domain last time we spoke to update it. I can send them the current DNS records for a domain they don't have access to? Are you in a position to send us the DNS records? No. I'm going for a nap in the toilets. Edited February 18, 201412 yr by Jack
February 18, 201412 yr Oh Jack, I feel your pain. Must be the same hosting company I've been dealing with. A nap in the toilets sounds like just the thing. ie8 fixes for me today. We all agreed NOT to support ie8 (just basic usability) as only 2% of users are on it and yet the people updating the site are on Windows XP and can't seem to remember not to open it with ie.
February 18, 201412 yr I have been trying to change a domain nameservers myself for ages (uk fast). Still no luck, asked a few people for help and they couldn't do it, contacted the host and they came back to me with some non-sense.......

Yeah they phone me all the time trying to gain business ... that's what voice mail is for
February 18, 201412 yr Glad I'm not the only one that this sort of stuff happens to. No, they're all part of some evil empire trying to make us all waste our time and patience. Edited February 18, 201412 yr by mantis
February 25, 201412 yr My turn for DNS worries. The hosting company is purposely taking all day to respond and then pretends to misunderstand my question Bastards!
February 25, 201412 yr Next time just ask the following ... If it takes a week to walk a fortnight, how many apples in a pound of grapes this colour?
February 25, 201412 yr An email conversation this week with a domain registrar who doesn't let us manage redirects (for some reason, old client we don't ask questions).Me: "Can you forward www.example.com onto www.example.co.uk/page.html please?"Them: "We have just completed that for you."Me: "Hi, the redirect goes to the root site not the single page, can you please forward it onto the single page?"Them: "That is because you haven't set it up correctly, please amend the domain records using the following guide."AAAAH!!!?!?!! We don't have access to change the domain records and the guide is a 404, plus this was not a different support advisor this was the same advisor each time.I feel like going Hulk on them. February 25, 201412 yr Next time just ask the following ... If it takes a week to walk a fortnight, how many apples in a pound of grapes this colour? They would probably answer that one correctly. Its the simple and direct ones that pose a problem. I feel like going Hulk on them. Like this?
February 26, 201412 yr Like this? Lol, yea I was just expecting a standard Hulk video, but that was way better than my expectations! Thanks.
February 26, 201412 yr Ok that's freaking it - CMS are now banned! Client: If you click on Events at the top of Home Page it takes you to the Forth Coming Events page but there is no link to the actual events we have listed through the admin page. (at the moment there are none.) Where do they go when we upload them through the Admin CRM link? Me: I’m a bit confused. The events page will show all the forthcoming events which you have added through the events 'link' in the CMS. Looking at your events I see 0 forthcoming events and 7 events which have past. The past events do not show on the main site as they are in the past and not forthcoming. The last event in the CMS expired on 27/12/2013. What ‘link’ to the actual events are you looking for? *cry*
February 26, 201412 yr What we tend to get a lot is:Client: "We need the CMS to do everything, we want to be able to edit everything!!"*Two weeks pass*Client: "Can you add this article for us we don't have time"*Another two weeks pass*Client: "Page 1 is going to a not found error?"Me: "It looks like someone has deleted the page."Client: "Oh dear, who was that?"Me: Hulk Smash
February 26, 201412 yr At work we use clean-slate CMS's only, so we can control literally everything we need to. We also work out exactly what the client will need to edit. Usually, if it's something that requires editing only a few times a year, we take it out of the CMS. A client only really needs access to a few things, entries, pages, user and asset management. Wordpress seems to have introduced some weird trend where clients have ultimate control over everything, when they really shouldn't. For the sake of damage control, the page and content structure, this is a very bad idea. Just say no, kids.
February 26, 201412 yr Man this CMS couldn't get lighter! It's a simple form with event, date, location and description ... the most baffling bit is he has added 7 already!
February 26, 201412 yr Man this CMS couldn't get lighter! It's a simple form with event, date, location and description ... the most baffling bit is he has added 7 already! It needs to be lighter. Use some kind of telepathic API so that you just think of an event, and it adds it.
February 26, 201412 yr CMS: Enter name: __________________ Client : I can't figure out where to enter my name. Could you spend an hour on Team Viewer showing me how to enter my name? I know you've explained this 5 times already but I'm not very technically inclined. Me: Moral of the story: It doesn't matter how simple or lightweight your CMS is the client will never understand. Edited February 26, 201412 yr by mantis
February 26, 201412 yr That's why our clients really like Craft's live preview, they can see how things are populated and work it out for themselves. I can understand how sites with a lot of custom fields can be confusing, especially when you can't view the site. The UI is also extremely client friendly and the devs remain in control of the output in our templates. Win. Edited February 26, 201412 yr by Jack
February 26, 201412 yr Something we are using more and more is the live preview inside WordPress, it makes it easier for our clients to edit things and not freak out or panic.
March 1, 201412 yr This made me laugh. I designed an A5 flyer for a client which was sent 3 times for final proof. They sign off and the flyers get delivered. I get an email today saying that there is an error with the order of their clubs mantra with a hint it's my fault ... hell no buddy, proof sign off is exactly that and secondly if the chairman of the club cannot spot this how the hell is the designer who has no real idea what their club does?

This happens to our designers a bit too, one company signed off their name with a plural in it and went to full print.

March 5, 201412 yr I've been so busy helping the other people in the office, I haven't got anything done in about 5 days. It's a nightmare. It's all quotes, emails, phone calls, ect. I just want to build websites, since that is technically my job. Does anyone else get weeks like this?

I do, some days (usually Mondsys) I can't do any design/code work. I wish I had someone who dealt with clients, so I can do actual work.
March 5, 201412 yr I feel your pain guys, spend more time writing quotes and contracts, dealing with emails and keeping up with the spreadsheets than anything else sometimes. Today's gripe: Can't register a domain for outlook emails as it contains a protected word. The word is windows - my client is a replacement windows company with the word in several of their domains e.g. mylovelywindows.com. It's a PITA as I've already moved another of their domains over to outlook, thinking the rest would be easy enough. So more emails and explanations to follow. Meantime, there might be a couple of hours to do some real work

I just want to build websites, since that is technically my job. Does anyone else get weeks like this? That's a tough one. I don't think I'd last 5 days without blowing a fuse. Phone calls are the bain of my existance. If it isn't clients, it's friends, if it isn't friends it's family. I don't mind talking to people but the phone ALWAYS rings just when I'm about to sort something out and it completely breaks my concentration. I do, some days (usually Mondsys) I can't do any design/code work. I wish I had someone who dealt with clients, so I can do actual work. I would SO love someone to deal with this sort of thing but I don't think I get around it. It makes me wish I worked full-time for an agency.
