September 4, 201015 yr Hi everyone, i have decided to share my logo design process with you. I have a friend who's starting his own kick boxing/martial arts classes, he needs a logo done and some leaflets. Since he's a good friend i'm willing to do it for free, so I thought it would be a good chance to share the design process with this awesome forum. Maybe some can learn from it or even help me improve. So lets start. The name: Renegades Kick boxing. There is no other specific requirements he wants, so i can go and create what ever i want! Wooo! When designing a logo the name plays a real part, some logos consist of just typography reflecting the name, so it's vital to do some research into the meaning of the name if there is one. So... Step 1: Research into the company, get a feel for what they do. Research into the name of the company and why they have chosen this name. Definition of "Renegade": someone who rebels and becomes an outlaw rebel: break with established customs deserter: a disloyal person who betrays or deserts his cause or religion or political party or friend etc. recreant: having deserted a cause or principle; "some provinces had proved recreant"; "renegade supporters of the usurper" Why did he chose the name renegades I wondered? "Because it sounded cool" Ok then, onto step 2. Research... Stay tuned if your interetsed!
September 4, 201015 yr Author Step 2:Research other existing logos, get inspiration (but don't copy!). Look into the styles of other logos, find logos you like and pick out what you like about them. Good websites are: Google images, Logo pond, logo faves, crettica by tuts plus. I find it's useful to copy and paste the logos onto a canvas (check the attachment). You can keep the logos on screen then while drawing out ideas (Don't be tempted to copy though!). Onto step 3, the drawing pad! Get some music on and get the drawing pad out! Sketch as many ideas as you can, narrow it down to your favourite ideas. Keep the logos on screen that you have researched and keep in mind what it is that you like about the certain logos.
September 4, 201015 yr Author Step 3: The drawing pad. You don't have to be the best drawer; just sketch your ideas down, until you have a few designs to chose from. I usually spend longer on this part when the job is at a higher price.
September 4, 201015 yr Author Once the final idea has been sketched, it's time to scan it into Illustrator. I think Illustrator is the best, though you could use what ever vector based program you like. Step 4: Scan final idea into illustrator, and get to work with the pen tool! Mastering the pen tool is a must for any designer!
September 5, 201015 yr Author Step 5: Final logo finished . Time to look into typography for the logo.
September 7, 201015 yr Author Step 6: Typography. The typography you use should always compliment your logo, so its a real must that you chose the perfect font to match your logo. I find its useful to compare all the fonts on one canvas. When you've decided what font your happy with, try it out with the logo.

September 7, 201015 yr Author Step 7: This step is not necessary, though you can add some final effects to the logo. I've taken the logo into photoshop and added a simple grungey background and a gradient. Final logo: I'm sorry this tutorial has been in bits and bobs; it's a side project and i have been busy with other work. We got there in the end! Hope some people can learn from this! October 25, 201015 yr Out of interest, how much did you charge for this? I love the complete design process, sadly rarely you get time to use it to it's full extent! Rarely do clients seem to appreciate the time you can spend on a logo! I really think the more time you put in to the process the better the end result!

October 29, 201015 yr cool sounds like exactly what we do in Resistent Materials at school hahaha. i think a good thing to get as an addition to your pc kit for this kind of work would be one of the usb drawing pads ( cant remember what there called but im sure you know what i mean)

I wouldn't mind a wacom cintique though! They look fun!

December 16, 201015 yr This is actually a pretty awesome tutorial most hand feed a logo tutorial in photoshop but you give the behind the scenes research. Really awesome I like it and your results.
