January 20, 201016 yr What is it exactly when people mention web 2.0.? Where is web 1.0 end and web 2.0 begin. What differentiates them and is there any overlap. Is there a web 3.0 on the horizon?
January 20, 201016 yr What is web 2.0? A Myth! It is a load of crap, spurted by people in power to make other people pay more for websites. There is no such thing as web 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.9.1.25667 There is only evolution of web design and development and the technologies available to us. In it's loosest form, web 2.0 is basically anything with a social aspect... but my opinion is that is a load of old ********!

I could write a whole essay on web 2.0, but for now, lets just say that it is anything that has a social element. It has NOTHING to do with design
January 20, 201016 yr I'm with terydinho on this, web 2.0 is more how the web developed in terms of easier social communication...as for web 2.0 in terms of design there is no such thing. Personally I think web 2.0 design is really just a term people when trying to explain a current trend of web design, or have no idea what 2.0 actually stands for. As many design trends have happened since web 2.0 was coined and a lot of these styles contradict each other yet all seem to fall under web 2.0. So it is either a wide category of design styles, a silly name for any current design trend, or it is just misunderstood and is really just a phrase used for how the web developed in terms of social technology.
January 20, 201016 yr I'd always thought that web 1.0 was static pages and instant transitions whereas web 2.0 was smooth animations and dynamicly changeable pages (such as jQuery and AJAX) Having worked in the industry for a year I've never been asked to make something "more web 2.0" so I pay it no mind.
January 20, 201016 yr Web 2.0 is, in lamens terms, the progression from static site content do dynamic information that interacts more with the user and, in turn, allows the user to interact and communicate with others.
January 21, 201016 yr Author SO, it sounds like web 2.0 is something coined up by non technical people to brand a new breed of web sites(social networking), rather than the introduction of new technology.
January 21, 201016 yr Web 2.0 is more philosophical rather than a standard. I have heard tons of explanations ranging from a heightened interaction with a website's users to nice glossy, reflective logos and buttons as mentioned above. I really believe it's just a bunch of people making up these terms in order to try and lead the design frontier. I believe it's not too unlike a rap artist making up a new word like "fo-shizzle" and everyone else just thinks it's cool and runs with it.

January 21, 201016 yr As everyone has basically summed up there is no Web 2.0 it's a phrase used by different people, to explain different things, when really it's just a completely made up term. Technologies have changed and improved but it doesn't mean we upgraded by 1.0, it's all nonsense.
January 21, 201016 yr Shame so many folks missed Web 0 in the rush to Web 2.0! For me Web 2.0 is shorthand for "I made it shiny and stuck a Twitter button on there!". These terms do help as a shorthand when talking about design and the web - trouble is a lot of folks don't understand that's all it is, attach too much meaning to it or, more commonly, use it to hype some pointless feature! <rant> Web 3.0? That's what the incompetent and useless w3c killed - a semantic web. But, with their crap handling of XHTML we've ended-up with the oh-so-shiny, shiny HTML5 - superb for more shininess (sure it's got some nice features) and the pixel jockeys love it, but we're further than ever from a semantic web and truly opening-up the web's potential. Maybe by Web 94.0 the development of the web won't be driven by the novelty of aesthetics but more by unlocking the true value of all that shared information. </rant> Edited January 21, 201016 yr by wizely
