Continuing the current trend of interesting lifestyle polls on the forum, I thought this would be another interesting addition.

There's a huge public perception that people who work with the Internets (i.e. "geeks") are the loner hormonally-enraged teenager. Of course we all know this is bull, but what is it really like for you with relationships? Are you able to keep stable ones? Do you ever have time? Is your partner into web design also?

This is all in good faith, so don't shoot me for asking.

Well i've been married for nearly 3 years. My wife has no real interest in web design but it doesn't matter. I just have to learn to shut up about it when i'm at home lol. As for time, well I work for myself, so I make sure I always have time for my family, otherwise whats the point?

Married for 6 years.

I won't let designing get in the way of any aspect of my personal life, and only take on what I know I can handle. Besides... I tend to do most of my work when the lesser half is in work or playing with his bikes in the garage!

He's not into it at all, and as regards talking about it.... if he starts boring me about engines and stuff, I start spouting about kerning and baseline shifts (and vice versa) :D

Im in a relationship (engaged)

The only time this affects the relationship, is if my GF comes home from work early, and moans that i am working when she wants to play games. Cant seem to understand that finishing a £400 project is more likely to get us a house than checking her mates latest facebook "i had a bad day at work"

Yes... that does annoy me a bit..... I leave the room for 5 mins to take a breather and he jumps on checking his facebook account and googling boring things. I then have to wait while he finishes. <_<

i am single and i kinda love it too but will surely look for someone in near future...

my work is what would usually interfere if i try to be in one... :pp

I'm 4 years into what feels like a life term... I wanted to add the option "half-open relationship" but I'm not allowed to touch polls (or Poles or poles - same strip club incident) any more.

Neither one of us is into web design so we lead a normal life!

And I'm a reformed teenager - I was one when I'm younger, but not for ages now.

in a committed relationship.

i gotta say to a couple of you guys, invest in a second pc! i don't live with my significant other, but i can't imagine sharing a computer with him. if we do decide to live together our office is definitely going to have 2 desks, if not it'll be in 2 separate rooms. i like my space. :)

don't get me wrong, we're incredibly patient and compromising with one another (and i suppose i would share if i had to) but i appreciate the convenience of having unlimited access to my design / work.

We do actually have 2 laptops, but his excuse is "I'll only be 5 minutes and it takes to long to power the other up"

I said about getting a second laptop, but she said we needed the money more towards our deposit for a house. The 3 PC's have all gone FUBAR and dont fancy paying a fortune to have them repaired.

@Chris - when you want to meet up for that drink ;)

In a relationship - work doesn't usually affect the relationship at all, but recently I have had a huge project on which is taking up a load of my time; it is bloody annoying!!!

That project will be done in a week or so though; so me and the missus are going to take a weekend away and just chillax :D

Single and not looking at the moment, quite happy with how things are going right now :)

I chose yes to "Do you think your job/interest affects your relationships?" as sometimes I can spend days on end not budging away from my desk just hacking out code and to someone not interested in such things it can be bewildering and as I have experienced they will start thinking they are second best to your work / hobbies, though I don't imagine this is anything specific to web design / programming as I am sure people who have other interests which they can invest a lot of time into (working on cars, building models etc.) get the same accusations and grief from their other half as well.

I've been with my partner for 9 years now. We both work from home - me full time and him part time as he teaches in Edinburgh for part of the week - We used to live in a tiny one bedroom flat and had to build a loft bed to allow room for an office underneath that - that certainly got in the way of the relationship as I would go to bed at midnight and he'd often continue working until 4am. We drove each other mad when working in the same room - he doesn't like my taste in music, or my singing or that fact that I talk to clients on the phone loudly. I don't like his constant mutterings and heavy breathing - he's got bad sinuses. But now we have a big house and separate rooms to work in and things are much better that way. As for computers - always had separate ones - I'm not allowed to touch his Macs and he's not allowed to touch my PCs.

I'm not allowed to touch his Macs and he's not allowed to touch my PCs.

Sorry.... that made me smile..... it's like a euphemism :D

Only helen.............

I can find it quite difficult, as the GF works 6-2, i wont get out of bed before 7 normally (although recently it has been earlier) i tend to work 8-5, but obviously some clients need to phone after 6, and she just doesnt like it. I cant wait to get a proper office rather than working from home, not much more needed and i can guarantee the money to cover it everymonth.

I've been with my missus for 2 years, getting an apartment next month, she's a make-up artist & has her studio, I'm a obvious designer and have mine! Just work the usual unless she has a wedding to do then I don't see her all weekend and have the boys round !! but get along fine work is not an issue!!!

In a steady relationship here, live with her and work from home now. I do see work and girlfriend time do have their clashes inevitably, especially with a misaligned sleeping schedule. I'm doing my best to work when she works, that way she doesn't have to deal with zombie me when I'm designing. Distractions really bother me just like how they'd bother most of you. So I try to maintain the duality of having web design mode and non-web design mode.

I've been with my girlfriend for 2 years now. She works in product research and development so she is probaly as geeky as me :pp

The only way it really affects my work is I want a new 24" monitor but she thinks we don't have enough room <_<
