Thanks for the feedback, I did originally have a grassy background - but I had to change it after feedback from people saying that was too distracting. Having a bright green next to the dark content box, people's eyes were just drawn to the green. What browser are you using at the moment? My track does extend to the bottom of the screen? Hi, for my final year project at uni I am creating a Scalextric based project. I aim to connect a Scalextric set to be able to be controlled with a WiiRemote rather than the standard controller. I also want to implement other features to enhance the gameplay of Scalextric, such as special weapons (e.g slow down opposition, skip a lap) - similar to Mario Kart. For my final year project I need a blog to go alongside my project. My project is to create a Scalextric circuit that is controlled by WiiRemotes, possibly adding extra features such as Mario Kart styled special boxes. I have themed my website around racing, F1 etc.. just to fit with the project. Logo's are a very important part of the companies image. It's on all promotional leaflets, business cards, website. Logo are key part of brand identity. A good logo will mean that people recognise the brand. People get "hung up" on making their logo good and lasting because of this reason. As for the logo's themselves I think number 7 is one of the better looking ones. I agree with the points about number one, about how its a non-conformist shape and therefore makes it distinguishable. I think I prefer davep's versions of them though. Reasons why I didn't like some of the others was mainly due to the 90s feel that others have mentioned. The gradients aren't the only culprits, in my opinion the black outlines also hinder the design, if these were removed I think some of the other logo's would be pretty good as well. Edit: Wow, just realised this was a fairly old post, so I guess not very useful anymore...

That's probably one of the best methods, but it still doesn't guarantee safety, why not just put the music on an iPod or something similar?

Site doesn't look too bad theres a few things I would consider changing though. - The "Internet News" box doesn't look good, I assume it's not your news feed and as such I would probably remove it. It changes news far too quickly and has no padding around the text. - The main text I feel has a too high a line height, and a few pixels shorter would improve it. - The projects slider buttons don't seem to do anything/change the direction of the slider? Also clicking on a project doesn't take it too a larger more indepth version as such the slider really doesn't pose any use as the images are too small as they are to get any information about them. - In the footer navigation, the "Share" link image is out of line, prob look better inline or next to the W3C images. - There seems to be a lot of mish-mash of fonts used on the site, it is recommended from a design point to use only a max of three fonts. - The logo looks very out of place, it doesn't match the design for the rest of the site, and generally is a poor design in my opinion. - The arrow to go to the top of the page, looks a bit odd.. the transparent arrow doesn't look great, and I think would look better as a solid colour (maybe white on the grey box). Also it is a fairly quick jump, it may be a nice effect to add some jquery to smooth scroll to the top. I hope this doesn't sound like I am being too harsh, it's a nice design and these are just points I think that will make it better

Thats's normally how my file structure looks, although as mrchristoph said, I also generally have a includes folder, which contains stuff such as header and footer elements.

I suspect most of those are templates, however if you want to design one yourself then photoshop is the best tool for you. There are lots of places where you can find tutorials, it will be best imo if you learned how to design all range of things then develop your own design rather then just following a step by step guide to create a gaming template. I'm not really familiar with Serif WebPlus, but guess its a wysiwyg editor.. if this is the case then don't go near it. If your serious about web design then you will want to code it by hand. WYSIWYG editors often add un-needed code and generally are not as browser consistent as if handwritten code. If your looking for free html-editors then I can suggest a few. I used text-wrangler for a bit (mac only) and it was fairly good, but you can work just as well with something like notepad. There are also software that you can use on trial basis, such as coda or even dreamweaver. It may be wise to use these for the 30 day trials then move on to something else. Other free text editors that are good: NotePad++ Aptana (I didn't like this too much, but others have) TextMate There are loads out there so just search around. Hope this helps

Just the type on the image, it just seems a bit poorly positioned. Like some of the letters are over objects of on the image and kinda makes it hard to see some of the letters. It's not too bad as it is, it's just me being picky

Out of the two, definatly the one with the large image banner, although think the text could be improved on it.
