Hey, I have been experiencing this issue for a number of years and have never actually my desirable way around it, so thought I'd ask and see if anyone has any clues. Basically if I have a div that has a contained div that floats to the left, then the parent will not stretch to the height of the floated div. For example if I did something along these lines: <div style="background-color: #000000;"> <div style="float: left;"> <p>put a bunch of content here</p> </div> </div> The background should be black behind all the content of the contained div, but instead it would not resize the div to the height of the contained one. Anyone experienced this before and found a way around it that does not involve explicitly declaring the height of the parent?

For years I have always created things from scratch however as of late I am really starting to be taken in by expanding on existing systems as it really does allow you to concentrate on the eye candy as opposed to the security, performance etc. of the back end. There are some advantages to writing your own systems however such as the fact you don't get as many bots trolling them, and big name packages are often targets of people trying to exploit security flaws, however these are still going to cause you problems if you don't have the knowledge of how to prevent such things so it can be a bit of a catch 22. If you don't have the experience deffinately look into expanding on an existing system such as WordPress If you do have the experience just go with your gut feeling

Does webdesignerforum have an IRC channel up anywhere?

The only thing I could pick about is the header area, looks a bit plain with just a white background, apart from that I think it looks very nice

I believe most people (who have the money to spare) would rather go to a web designer over using services such as the one you linked because: They may still feel intimidated about doing it even though it is advertised as an easy to use solution If they go to someone else they can specify exactly what they want as opposed to hoping what they want is included in the package They will get a unique design unlike most of the website builder services which most of the time provide a selection of preset designs and schemes for the users to select from

Al though it is not a server side language I would recommend doing a bit of Java if you are interested in learning about OOP concepts, I have found it to be a very forgiving language when you are trying to get your head around the various concepts such as inheritance, polymorphism etc.

This may seem like a random question, but does anyone know where I could obtain a list of functions that have become deprecated throughout PHP 4.x and 5.x ?

I personally use Photoshop for pretty much everything, I gave Illustrator a try but all the time using it I just kept feeling the need to go back to Photoshop. I have been using Photoshop for many years though so I suppose I will naturally always have a preference to it as it is what I am familiar with. Your best bet would be to head over to the Adobe site and grab the trials and see which you find easier to work with Edit: Just realised how big of a canvas you said you are working with, I would recommend Illustrator due to the size as Illustrator is a vector based program, so you can scale things to larger sizes or smaller without worrying about distortion, however once you have finished your outline design I would recommend using Photoshop to add your colour and any visual effects.

Single and not looking at the moment, quite happy with how things are going right now I chose yes to "Do you think your job/interest affects your relationships?" as sometimes I can spend days on end not budging away from my desk just hacking out code and to someone not interested in such things it can be bewildering and as I have experienced they will start thinking they are second best to your work / hobbies, though I don't imagine this is anything specific to web design / programming as I am sure people who have other interests which they can invest a lot of time into (working on cars, building models etc.) get the same accusations and grief from their other half as well.

I chose talking to clients, though I don't mind it when I have cooperative clients, I just don't like the ones who expect you to work for peanuts and expect you to know exactly what they want without giving you any input for example I did a site for a content production company a while ago and the woman who contacted me in regards to the web site said there is nothing I need to take into consideration when I asked if there are any specific colour schemes, layouts etc. that they want implemented, then when I present the prototype she turned around to me and said "It is nice but I wanted the text to be pink.", I think I saw red at that point.

I also would like a decent IRC to hang out on, been a long time since I found a nice place to hang out Not even been able to find a good forum to hang out on until I found this place last night, seems pretty decent.

This morning I was having a browse of the iPhone App Store over breakfast as you do and I came across a program called RunKeeper which claimed to: Track how far you travel Track how fast you traveled Estimate the amount of calories burned It has more features but the three above were enough reason for me to check out the free download, I have just been for a walk and tested it out and I am truly blown away by it, the on screen stats it gave me were quite impressive however then it uploaded all the data to my online profile on the RunKeeper website which actually includes a map showing the path I walked and allows you to see where I was at specific points in time, you can check it out for yourself here: http://www.runkeeper.com/pub/act/kBw7m6HWKuwYcivGXt2d If you are into jogging, running, walking, biking or any exercise that requires you to travel you should definately check it out, it records all the data by using a GPS connection so unfortunately using it on the iPhone 2G and iPod Touch are out of the question, but if you have an iPhone 3G/3GS you definately have to give it a try!
