Hey Everyone,
 
I have been with Webhostinguk for a while now however they changed their services, and the host is no longer serving up pages at speed which I purchased their VPS solution for.
 
On my heaviest page I get 85% Pagespeed, and 90% Yslow from GTMetrix, while my website isn't currently full optimised the statistics just seem ridiculous.
 
Page load time: 12.98s
Total page size: 316KB
Total number of requests: 41
 
What I was getting:
1 dedicated CPU Core
1 GB RAM
15 GB - I barely use one, max will be 5GB
Unlimited Bandwidth(can't remember what they said about this)
Full Root SSH Access(never used panel)
2 IP's
CentOS 6.2
 
I am paying £21 per month, what is the fastest uk(preferably mainland England)solution I can get in that price bracket? I would rather not setup my Linux server from scratch this time a round.

Why does everyone want unlimited? You don't need it. It's pure marketing nonsense.
 
Your average WP install is under 1GB, a small website with a few thousand visits a month will barely register a hit on bandwidth.
 
Hell we have a client with over 1mil page views per month and they don't need 'unlimited' anything!
 
And finally THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS UNLIMITED!

If these are with respect to .uk then you have at-mimum 5 years to not worry about it.
 
I would otherwise not pay much attention to the other new GTLD unless you have a specific need or a high probability of some sort of brand squatting.

Yep, the move from Softlayer to Bluehost did not sit well for a lot of people when the migrations were happening.

I guess the reason the 'unlimited' term is able to be used is because a spec of 1TB traffic and 200GB can only get hit by very few people on shared hosting. So for most of the market it is unlimited...

We have three data centres, 2 in Slough and 1 in Maidenhead. For the US we are looking to potentially use Equinix, but nothing is confirmed as of yet.

You're going to be redirecting one to the other anyway.
The main thing is being consistent.
 
Whichever one you settle on, make sure you use it everywhere.
 
Don't give some people the www. link and others the none www. link.

Just be careful here. Lots of folks become unhappy after the forced move to their new datacentre (that were previously happy).

I am sure most of the WDF community would agree with here...
 
If the file sizes of the website and traffic is low, check out 'web hosting' aka 'shared hosting' options that allow you to host multiple domains (domains within the account of the hosting provider and domains hosted externally with other registrars).
 
Moving the site can be done in two ways:
 
1. Yourself
2. The new hosting providers offers a migration service << this option is popping up more and more nowadays
 
Please note:
Where you might find the process taking a little bit longer is if you are also transferring the domains. If it is a .CO.UK its easy (change IPS TAG) and most hosters accept this as a free transfer, however if the domains include a .COM, there is a process that needs to be followed (like the domain owner, needs to approve the transfer) and a payment made to the new hosting provider for the transfer. Most hosts only charge what it costs to renew the domain an extra year.

Yeh, but it's still the wrong term to use. Unlimited implies that I could host Facebook in it's entirety for £10 a month. Until you read the small print (which no one does).

And your recommendation isn't just because you're an affiliate?

I would recommend hosting your clients sites. All it takes is a client to forget to renew their account and it all starts getting messy. At least when it's your account, you can prevent this from happening. It also makes support easier, some hosting companies require that you provide proof that you're acting on behalf of a company for security reasons. Since you would be the one who purchased the hosting, it makes things easier.
 
We setup a standing order that takes any hosting costs out of their bank account monthly, that way there's no waiting for a check in the post.
 
Regarding who owns the website or code, that's something that goes inside your contract and can differ between clients. Generally, if they did want to move away for whatever reason, it's easy enough to provide them with what they need, and you just invoice for your time spent assisting them with the move.

My recommendation is to have a blend of the two options you discuss above.
Offer your design services with or without hosting Offer to hand over the code for the client to manage or charge a maintenance fee However, the seasoned designers of WDF would be best to tell you whether this is a viable option or not With regards to the type of hosting package, if you may have the option of managing/not managing sites then I HIGHLY recommend going for our Reseller 25 package to start off with and when you grow, you will be able to seamlessly upgrade the package later on. It costs £14.99 pm (cheaper than Business+). Each customer or you will have access to just that particular account to manage site files/emails/additional domains etc. You may have different hosting charges that you want to charge your potential customers e.g. for your friend you might give a free package and to clients you might charge different prices dependent on their package requirements By having a reseller account, you can control the usage of the hosting space e.g. you might get one client who needs a lot of space or gets a lot of traffic and if need be you can tweak the amount allocated to them and charge (if you want to charge for the extra bandwidth use)  
 
 
Yes, it is allowed by the hosting provider and no you are not breaking the law, but without the reseller functionality people logging into the account have access to other client files (if you allow them access).

One way is to "park" the extra domains on your hosting account, then add in permanent redirects for somedomain.com > maindomain.com
 
To park a domain name you need to update that domains nameservers (same as the primary domain). Then go into your hosting control panel, park them, and add the directs.

You pay for quality in this world. If you can't afford quality then you can't afford fast + reliable.

The main con is just time. I migrated a site last night and it took hours. As long as you plan ahead you shouldn't run into issues.
 
The following checklist is a good place to start.
 
You have all the credentials for the FTP, DB and domain name accounts, check they work ahead of moving the site. Check there are no conflicts in software version numbers. If the sites are using an old version if PHP for example, check they are compatible and vise-versa. Check you have the required PHP and Apache extensions installed. If you run into a mod_rewrite issue for example, the site will error like mad. Don't forget to check email accounts, they may be hosted on a random server somewhere. Don't forget to FTP all required files, especially images. Uploading to a sub directory may break paths to CSS, JS ect. This is dependent on the setup though. Look into editing your host file, you will need this to test the site once the DNS has changed. It's crucial that you check how the site will appear before the DNS propagates so that when it switches over, you're already good to go.

Agreed, I've worked for a couple of the big hosters in the past and how we at Tsohost have grown is purely by word of mouth (which is great). A key reason to our continuos success is that the 4 founding fathers are still involved in the business day 2 day. They are either fixing, updating or maintaining the systems or answering support tickets. Attitude reflects leadership and our leadership here is awesome.

In case there is anyone reading this thread the summary is, that its all to do with money (isn't it always). You either bill your customers direct yourself or let the system handle it for you as explained in TSOHost response, copied below:

But if you wanted to use it (and it is available licensed from them) then you could do so and integrate it into the cPanel/WHM reseller hosting plan, and that is what a lot of hosting resellers do. WHM on the other hand, is just the reseller control panel which allows you to control the accounts, (just to avoid the confusion between the two)"
