The New Extensions

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Couldn't find any posts on this, if there is please let me know or delete my post....

I keep getting these emails about the new domain extensions coming soon, I remember before Xmas that I had one and I randomly selected ones to be told about when I could pre-order them.

Should I be thinking about doing this for all my domains / other domains or really is it not worth it? Is is better to just wait till they come out which could be a while? and sort it out then.

Thanks

If these are with respect to .uk then you have at-mimum 5 years to not worry about it.

I would otherwise not pay much attention to the other new GTLD unless you have a specific need or a high probability of some sort of brand squatting.

Agree with the above statement. Though I still find it fun trying to secure some funky domain names.

Personally, I will stick with the existing domain names extension, like com, net, org, also country code.

I'll wait and see about the new domain extensions. :)

the new domains are all about affinity. That is, the extension has a relation with the name. So, for example .guru would be suited well to gurus in the industry, .tips probably wouldnt be great for an ecom store (.shop would obviously be better) etc.

Then of course, if you want to try and get a premium one, just for the sake of trying to resell then like anything, its a gamble.

Where these TLDs can work well is for shortening previously long URLs. For example acme-plumbing-services.co.uk could be acme.plumbing which could be graet for some businesses, making their URL/emails more memorable.

It is really up to yourself if you think you should pre-register a few new gTLDs for your already registered domains - what are the benefits of you owning these domains? Will you simply redirect this domain to your existing domain or is it to stop others registering these domain names before you?

Thanks
