    Sazzad got a reaction from andy9l in Gravit - Design & Collaboration Platform
    Hi Folks,

    I wanted to introduce you to a new design and collaboration tool we are working on for the web. Over the last few years, we have seen a number of new graphic design tools. But most of those are exclusively on Mac, which left Windows and Linux users in the dust. We wanted to change that. We intend to create the world’s first web-based screen design tool and we want everyone to have the ability to design. Being web-based means that anyone using any operating system — be it Mac, Windows or Linux — can use Gravit from anywhere, at any time. We hope that this will open up new possibilities for both design professionals and aspiring designers.

    Gravit is built with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The back-end engine does all of the “heavy lifting” and designers can use the app without any need to install anything locally. The app runs in the browser but it feels almost like a desktop app.

    Gravit is free to use and offers two ways of getting into your first design. If you want to make a “quick jump” into the app itself, you can simply load www.gravit.io and click on the “Create design” button. For those who want to explore the Gravit’s screen design features, this is the way to get started. The limitation is that you cannot save your designs or upload any image assets.

    To unlock the app’s full potential (including all collaboration features), you need to sign up first. This requires a little effort though, as you’ll have to play a quick game before you can claim your beta invite — but don’t worry, the game is pretty easy.

    We're always looking for ways to improve this product. And we want designers and developers like you to provide us with feedbacks and features you would like to see.

    Bit of a bugger - you're running up against the combined limitations of mobile graphics chips and ports. Eg, a single-link DVI port can only handle up to 1,920 * 1,200 @ 60Hz. Dual-link more, but the graphics chip also has to be capable, and that's rare in consumer-grade machines.

    Edit: best advice would be: if you have room to leave 2 monitors set up, you have room for a desktop.

    This is actually quite a easy play layout. All it does it uses CSS and a few javascript to make content show and hide. As you can see, the author uses list styles for the large text font to display that navigation. If you look at his style.css file, you will see that he calls the navigation slidingMenu and gives it several css gradient effects for the outer box. The author takes advantage of jQuery.easing version 1.3 to make the sliding effect. Using his custom Javascript, he defines what item he wants to control the effect of.

    So basically in simple english, the author uses his stylesheet located in http://christopherkovacs.net/css/style.css to give the site its look. Then he calls for jQuery.easing.1.3 library to help his custom javascript which he lists right after the library callout. That's pretty much it.

    I've met a few graphic designers for example (obviously not the ones on here) before who told me they'd really like to get into web design but didn't want to go near any coding because they thought they couldn't do it, it confused them etc. - well we all started out like that.

    At last the long waited sZ Buttons Kit is ready! sZ Buttons Kit is a easy to use, easy to integrate kit that brings you some “brilliant buttons” (Forrst user). This buttons-kit is created to provide ease in the web-development process for all designers and developers. The buttons and icons can be used by anyone on any website. You are welcomed to not only use this kit for your work but also encouraged to modify, customize and enhance this work so that it can help make the design community even more. This release of the kit only includes small button icons with a selection of 30 different icon buttons. You can even add more by adding a few simple lines of code. The icons used in the buttons are FamFamFam’s Silk Icon set. I used them mostly because of my engineering mindset: “why re-invent the wheel?” The code was inspired by Nick Roach and AListApart.

    Fully Coded

    One wonderful feature of this kit is that it is FULLY coded and compatible with a large number of browsers. This list includes:

    Mozilla Firefox 3.0 +
    Internet Explorer 7.0 +
    Safari 4.0 +
    Chromium 9.0 +

    Share Alike License

    I am developing this kit to help the design and development community out and not for my own sake. I feel that just providing a product for free download (in this case) does not really help a community unless they get to play around with the files and codes. With that said, I am providing this kit under the Creative Commons Share Alike license (read more on it in the demo page). You can modify the buttons and the source code to anything you like. Note that I did not make the icons, so those follow the license provided by FamFamFam.

    Are you using these buttons on your site? I would love to see them live in action. Feel free to post a link to where you are using these icons and I will make sure to visit the site. Also note that this can be free advertisement for your site :-p.

    Updates and Future Releases

    I plan on keeping this kit as updated as possible. If there are any features you would like to see or some changes you wish for me to make, feel free to share it in the comments below.

    I have both and Linux so I can give you a little tip. If you are a designer then you should get a Mac Book pro. It has really great graphics card and is, in my opinion, design ready. If you are more like a programmer or coder, then you should either stick to windows or get Linux. The main reason for this is because of the wide variety of software and tools available for these two platforms. Using a Windows and Mac together will help you succeed very well and provide you with an upper-hand.

    @Alan >> I meant that new personal site design you were working on. To be honest, I like that design better than your current one.

    @Evan >> You gain rep by making a post that someone finds useful. When they do, they will click that little + button on the bottom right corner of your post. That adds up all the reps. But I would not trust the rep system much as it's quite new, and some misuse of it does occur (i.e. some users double register to give themselves + rep).

    Sazzad got a reaction from kanger in background img not showing in IE
    Instead of using 1 image for that section, have you considered breaking the image down to two and using two containers? You're structure would end up being something like this:

    <div class="contact_form"> <div class="contact_form_header"> </div> <div class="contact_form_container"> </div>
    CSS

    .contact_form { width: 500px; background: url('images/contactform_bg.png') repeat-y left top; } .contact_form_header { width: 500px; height: 65px !important; background: url('images/contactform_header.png') no-repeat left top; overflow: hidden; } .contact_form_container { width: auto; margin: 5px 95px 5px 10px; }

    You can add your form codes in there along with your CSS. The form should not affect the container.

    I also took the liberty to enhance some of the images for you. Since I don't know the exact font used in that image, I used "Stylus BT" Roman Style Settings with font size of 35 bold #0C6CA6 in Adobe Fireworks CS5. The images are all editable in Adobe Fireworks in case you want to make any changes to them.

    Sazzad got a reaction from futureproof in CSS - Display:block?
    Here's the typical navigation code block I use when I design my websites.

    /***NAVIGATION***/ .nav{ width: auto; font: 14px "Comic Sans MS",Verdana,Arial,Tahoma; margin: 0 10px; height: 40px !important; overflow: hidden; } .nav ul{ width: auto; margin: 0; text-align: left; height: 40px !important; overflow: hidden; } .nav ul li{ display: inline; } .nav ul li a{ color: #706150; padding: 10px 20px; margin: 0; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: #ffffff 1px 1px 1px; text-transform: lowercase; letter-spacing: .1em; line-height:40px; } .nav ul li a:hover{ background: url('../images/hav-hover.png') repeat-x center center; line-height:40px; }

    The .nav acts as the main container. The .nav ul allows me to align my navigational links (left, center, right). The main li tag is where I set my display time (inline is often best in my opinion), li a is where I define the padding and text style information. The line-height property is very important as it helps set the proper link block sizes. I started using this code a while back; I believe I whipped this up after watching several code styles over at DynamicDrive.com.
