Someone's nicked my 404!

Featured Replies

I was looking though my stats today and noticed some links that I didn't recognise, so I followed them, to find this:

My 404 error page

Not only have they nicked my error.css file and not changed a thing in it, so therefore are linking to my site images and using my bandwidth, they've taken my little eskymo image and plonked it onto their website and made a horrifically squished up facivon out of her too!!!

I've sent them an email, but got a feeling it will be ignored. What else can I do?

maybe I should change the image name's, locations and also the error.css file info, but then they've still got my eskymo graphic and the error page css.

Block hot-linking for that domain:

http://www.bylandwaterandair.com/extras/co...ngle_domain.php

You should be able to make it so that any requests from that domain go to an evil error message pointing out that they are thieves!

Ooh, here's a link showing how to make it direct to an image with a message on it for them!

http://www.knowledgebase-script.com/demo/article-376.html

Edit: how to block from specific URL's & have an image that it points them to:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?myspace\.com/ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?blogspot\.com/ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?livejournal\.com/ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ /images/nohotlink.jpe [L]

That way if you like to host stuff that you hotlink to (as I do) you still can.

ooh that looks like a good idea! never heard of that - will have a look.

I don't mind them stealing my code, but they could've created ther own graphics and not used my branding/logo.

cheers for the link

excellent - I'm going to sort this out this evening, cheers!

yup I would stop the hotlinking and make a directing image with a nice message about stealing (don't forget to add a url to your site too on that image )

Or you could redesign what they are hotlinking to say something along the lines of 'this is nicked visit my site'.

I can't remember the exact story, but recently there was a well-known religious guy I think in the US doing the same thing and the webmaster who was having his stuff nicked changed the files so his website showed some blasphemous stuff.

Good luck with this, I remember the old one of changing the links to porn lol.

evil lol.

Personally, I think they are unproffesional in doing this. Its some sort of german myspace clone. Wont take off, especially if they do this all the time/

I'd redirect their 404 page to a site on copyright fraud e.t.c

Argh, it's so frustrating to see this happen so often.

I think they have stopped linking from your site so you won't be able to edit the image.

Yup the images are now hosted on their site. So best thing to do now is send a polite email telling them to remove it as it is yours and you own the copyright to the character and have not give permission for it to be used.

It really annoys me when people think it is ok to steal.

Someone needs to setup an international small claims court for web-based copyright infringement. It is a German site so you have all the powers of the EU to throw at them, at least it isn't an Asian company or something.

I know they nicked the eskymo character and have that on their server, but in their [my] stylesheet they are still linking to my site: http://www.my-igloo.net/assets/bgrpt_header.jpg

So I can still block them.

I ahev sent them a very polite email asking them to stop using my branding and character as I own the copyright and they have not got the right to use any of my designs.

will see if I get a reply.

well I do have a friend who's a lawyer and he always gets involved when clients done pay on time or take the p***, so if they don't get back to me about this and remove my images, then I'm sure he'll be happy to write me a legal letter and I can send it to them in the post.

I'm very tempted to change my bgprt_header graphic to say 'theiving b****rds' and upload that in place of the one that's there and make sure I change the name of the graphic I actually use on my site so it displays fine on my site, but shouts obscenities on theirs. But as it's a background image called via the css I'll not doubt have a caching issue and people will see the obscenities on my site if they don't refresh.

The hotlink and redirect method will work on that image :)

Mannn.. So much web design stealing going on these days. :(

Or...... "stehlen wir keine urheberrechtlich geschützten Bilder"

Couldn't resist:

"wir riechen"

please tell me what that means !!! :D

  • Author

If that means what I thin it means...it might not be a good idea - I am Polish after all!

Wouldn't want to start another war!

that's great news! I'm still working and will be til quite late tonight, so wasn't going to round to doign anything about this until later on - they've obviously got my email and acted upon it - well I hope so.

Maybe they've been reading this thread???

lol :pp

How dare they plonk your eskimo, the b*****s!

(how about swapping the eskimo for a picture of Hitler? Possibly not the most politically correct reponse ever, but might be effective)

Having said that though, I'm not seeing any stolen content at the moment. Touch wood*
