Do you need to know Microsoft Office (or perhaps G Suite) before applying for a job as a web developer?

You don't have to but being able to use things like word processor and spreadsheet apps can be useful.

I sometimes use spreadsheets for tasks such as creating/editing CSV info for importing data into a CMS, and word processors for writing stuff like project documents.

You don't have to use Microsoft or Google products either, there are plenty of alternatives.

Hahaha yeah mail merge and envelope printing is web developer 101.

It would be a good lesson in how not to design a UI...

What? You should use Powerpoint, it's got loads of clipart

Both clipart and autoshapes are compelling, but Excel has a grid built in.

On a serious note, any documentation and so on I write is all done in Markdown so learning that is good, but not expected as a junior looking for their first job.

Never had to use any office or related tools in any of my roles as a dev.

Just as much as PowerPoint skills are required in graphic design.
