Claire, while there are some good points in that article there is also a lot of fluff and nonsense. To try and sift the chaff from the wheat would take a while but the key thing is to ignore everything in the article except for the bits about content creation. Google plus and schema markup is all fiddling round the outside. If you don't have content everything else becomes irrelevant.

Although I totally agree without content you might as well pack up and go home, schema although 'fiddling around the outside' does provide important content definition, and with geo coordinates / geo shape you can define which area / location you're referring to, really handy for locations with the same name e.g. there are 5 places called 'Redhill' in England. I've been running a trial on a massive UK wide geo-based project which has really shown growth in "X service near me" traffic since on mobile devices in the catchment area. Just saying it's worth a poke.

Interesting.

Is it the scheme data that makes the difference or is it having indexable data that Google is using? I've been split testing schema for a while and there is no appreciable difference between the ranking of the page with and the page without.

The schema difference isn't about tricks and the like. Simply put the /SearchResults were given a content location of a geo shape to the radius of search, which essentially is clarifying what the headings and descriptions refer to. The pages in question have very little unique content, sub 5 pa and still rank higher than sites such as Yell.com. The sites DA was only 18 at the time of starting, sub 300 inbound from 72 domains, none of which are over DA 20 or really worth mentioning, so if it's not helping then i'm stumped as to the cause
