I have been with 1and1 for a few years (as well as others) and have to say they have been the worst to work with.

 

Their DNS changes take aaaaaaages to come into effect.

Their email help is ridiculous getting copy and paste type replies.

 

I recently had hosting issues with hostpap - they updated their servers (PHP vers) and made a couple of my sites unable to run due to them being joomla 1.5 (no need to tell me its no longer supported, the site was fine) and as i couldn't get into the site to correct any errors it had as a result of their update I moved to godaddy where the sites ran fine where the DNS thing started.

 

Back to the domain issues, after 72 hours+ of the DNS not coming into effect and not getting an answer from 1and1 I decided to transfer it over to another provider and I will be moving other domains and hosting asap.

 

Lets hope the transfer goes ok, my site (business) is currently being forwarded and will probably affect its google position and affect my business!

 

I wont be using their cheap deals again, its only a couple of quid a year more.

Here is a tip, never trust a web host that offers 'unlimited' web space, it's a con, its a trick to make you believe you can upload what you want without ever having to pay more.. Then you realise there is a fair usage policy.

 

These hosts cram their servers full of websites and care little about the quality each website is getting, they simply care about profit.

I use 1&1 for a few domains because they are cheap and all I need is a simple registrar service, but I came unstuck with them recently when they took a week to do a simple transfer. I wouldn't use them again after that experience.

Quite agree. It is unbelievable how many fall for this 'unlimited everything' nonsense, even some professionals.

 

On a couple of other forums I frequent 1&1 has come in for quite an amount of criticism lately though. It appears the honeymoon is over.

Just my 2 pence worth. I normally keep all my domain registrations with Fasthosts and don't bother with NS changes. The reason is they have a good dns management interface so when transferring host you simply need to update the ip for the A records. This saves a lot of time as changes of effect take under an hour usually. As for hosting, I wouldn't host with Fasthosts if you paid me

Godaddy is like that, the domain service is pretty ok, I would never host with them though

Unlimited doesn't exist as Fuzzy Logic rightly suggests. If it's business critical, unlimited won't work neither will a budget host.

 

A good host, I can recommend is: VidaHost. They host our server and not had any problems yet.

Most things are trial and error.

Sometimes with unlimited hosting it goes okay for a while then it plays up and you move onto another.

The thing with 1and1 is their dns changes have never been quick.

I had a domain under the french 1and1 and when calling the UK helpline I mentioned France and they said (or shouted) we don't have 1and1 in France! ! Unbelievable.

 

Only had unlimited issues with the none mainstream hosters.

Am on day 11 of the domain transfer.

Emailed 1and1 this morning to ask how long and still waiting for an answer.

 

Can't believe how bad they are.

In my experience, there are many things to consider when choosing a host - in no particular order nor any 1 more or less important than the other: server speed, server security, not being on any blacklist, cost, and of course customer service just to name a few. For the last, for me this includes knowledgeable replies, prompt relies, and being able to actually understand what they are saying if talking to them over the phone. Nothing is more frustrating for me than getting a canned response, hesitant response, or a response in an accent I cannot understand. The last is not their fault I know but still. Language barrier can be frustrating - which is a decision made at the top.

 

As to your situation, I transferred a domain out from under 1&1 for the last reason. If I had issues, I know my client would have issues. Did you get all the proper codes (transfer id, security code, & authorization id from the outgoing host to input into the incoming hosts cpanel? Or are these the codes you are waiting on? The transfer id and security code is emailed to the email address on file with the outgoing host and the authorization id is available in the outgoing hosts cpanel. It usually takes about 7 days after the codes have been put in.

At last it's done.

 

In the end I had to change the registrar via nominet at £12. The site was back up within a few hours.

 

I'd have liked 1and1 to do this, or godaddy in fact.

 

I seem to remember doing this before transferring from 1and1 and again it cost me.

 

I did a transfer once with 123reg but that went trouble free and cost nothing so where the issue lies I don't know, I'm guessing 1and1 as everything seems to take an age.

 

Done, for now.

 

All I had to do was authorise a transfer and input ip tag on the account for the relevant domain which I did at the beginning.
