Ok,

So I would like to purchase a digital camera to assist me with my metal art blog. I am thinking of the go pro style, something that can take a series of photos over a period of time and also video.

 

I just saw my nephew's camera on his drone helicopter, the clarity of the video was amazing. Voice is not as important because I intend to voice over when I edit on windows movie maker.

 

I would like; remote control, external monitor plug in or wireless option.

 

I would like all of this without spending go pro prices, is it possible?

Most DSLR's or Compact System Cameras will do a lot of what you want. Video should be no problem.

 

If you mean you want time lapse built in then that may not be a standard feature. Remote control is not always available, so you'd have to check the specs. If by external monitor plug in you mean tethered shooting then again, that may not be available on entry level models.

 

I use Sony myself, both their DSLR type cameras and I have one of their CSC's (the line was called NEX, but seems to have been renamed). Canon and Nikon are more popular choices; Sony does tend to give you quite a lot for your money. They have switched to electronic viewfinders though, which isn't everyone's cup of tea.

You want something smaller then, it seems.

 

eta: those go pro prices are not that expensive - scratch everything I said in my previous post It sounds like you just want a decent compact camera. It may be tricky to find one with a remote shutter release though.

 

edited again to ask: What is it you like about the go pro exactly? Taking photos of metal art does not seem to be at all the same thing as strapping a camera to your head and skydiving.

I use the entry level Canon DSLR and while it doesn't have the time lapse stuff it does do pretty much everything else.

 

Like Jane says there are so many out there that will do what you want but it depends what brand you like/prefer and how much you are wanting to spend

those go pro prices are not that expensive -

 

Sorry, that came out wrong. I didn't mean to say that they are cheap, just that the DSLR / CSC suggestions are actually more expensive that the gopro cameras.

Thanks guys, I like the gro pro (Action style camera) because it can b mounted on a tripod in the corner and can take a series of photos over a selected time frame, IE a photo every 10 seconds or every 10 minutes. The high definition image looks impressive, the fact that it is compact and lite is appealing. I want a remote to be able to stop and start a video via a touch of the button.

 

I am sure the DSLR's have more features but the action camera is compact which is essential for me.

It sounds almost as if the gopro has more features, or at least the particular features that you want. Time lapse is not a standard feature on entry level DSLR's.

 

I'd be surprised if the image quality on the gopro is as good because the sensor is probably smaller (not the number of mega pixels; the actual physical size of the sensor) and the lens is probably not as good. However, in bright light, the quality is probably fine.

 

You could get a compact camera that gives reasonable quality still images and videos for less money, I'd think, but you'll struggle to find one that does time lapse. Not saying it isn't possible though

it sounds as if you've made up your mind on buying the gopro camera just want us to convince you that spending the money will be worth it ;-)

This is bugging me now because I feel that there ought to be other compact cameras that have the features you want. It's just a case of finding them.

Some of the Canon IXUS cameras might be worth a look. I've never used them though.

Thanks all for your feedback. I haven't made up my mind yet, I am weighing up all options. Thanks Jane B for the link to the Lmix camera, it is a fair price to.
