I always wondered how people pronounce these 2 words. I talk to developers all the time and alot of them say it differently...

 

Is it:

 

Favicon: Fah-Vi-Kon or Fav-Icon?

 

MySQL: My-Sequel (sounds like a follow up to your film) or My-S-Que-El.

 

Also do you have any other similar pronunciation problems with other Web type words?

I pronounce it Fav-ee-kon and My Sequel but I know someone who calls it My S-Q-L and just pronounces the letters.

I tend to say "Fav Icon" as it looks and My 'S-Q-L' (pronouncing letters).

MySeeeequel is just wrong, as that's how every single Recruitment Consultant pronounces it in my experience, and we all know that they're all an evil bunch indeedy.

I think Favicon sounds like a transformer that possibly goes from robot to gravy boat or something.

Like with 'HoTMetaL' I think MySQL should be referred to as 'My SQuirreL' - after all it hoards information, buries it, sometimes forgets where it is and then goes and squirrels away to retrieve it. Oh, and you have to be nuts to work with it!!!!

Exactly. I think my point was that it's up to you how you pronounce it, whether it's each letter or reading out the whole acronym as a single word.

But that doesnt work.

 

Nasa is pronounced Nah sah, because it can be, consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel - thats how it sounds! I'm sure if html was contructed in the same way then thats how we'd say it, but it isnt, so we say the letters.

 

The crux of it is that MySQL can in no way be 'pronounced' as My-Sequel,

 

It would be either My-Ess-Cue-El, or My-Suh-kwuh-Luh

But it is pronounced like that by a lot of people, there has to be a reason behind it for so many people to call it that way.

 

Either way I understand your point, I just think that as long as you know what they are talking about it doesn't really matter too much.
