I'm looking for some outside, designer advice. I work with another designer and we have different tastes. I understand we like different things, but I'm trying to do what's best for the company. Please take a look at the following two images. They are screenshots of one page of a site. One his is layout/design, one is mine. The only two things that are different are the background and the addition of a title bar (where it says Mobile & Landline).

 

Please don't go on about any other design problems you may see (I know there may be more), just take into account the background and title bar and let me know which one you think works better, from a design and user perspective.

From a design standpoint the darker green background is too much green IMO, I think they both need a lot of work but the lighter one would by my choice between the two

Your website design nice and i think first design very useful, because light color background is good.

Put personal taste to one side and ask the client what works for them. They might even say that this isn't the direction they want to go in at all. Working with the client throughout the design process generally makes it a lot easier, and you won't be investing time and effort into nothing more than guess work.

Jack is completely right, it's not your personal tastes you should be worries about, the audience is the important area of any design, who will see it, will they find it simple to use, does it cater to their needs, of course this would include targeting specific groups, for example you may find most your visitors are middle aged managerial men as an example, so it's their tastes you need to cater for

The "company" is the company I work for, so it's not like a client. And as the creative team for the company, we have ultimate say over what looks good and works best. However, reminding me that we are ultimately designing for the target audience, not what we like, then it comes back into perspective - the light gray would probably work better.

I think the light grey background with the title bar would look nice

The Left design. Although I do understand about personal taste compared to what the client wants, although the client can sometimes want designs which are a mockup of 50 web sites combined.

 

 

 

 

 

I want it to look like Facebook, Microsoft, Apples web site, oh my favorite clothing line web site, oh I love chocolate, make it have some look like Godiva chocolates as well. Do what you think is best.

I think the lighter version is a lot better on the eyes than the green.

According to me, I liked dark green color background design. Looks good.

I thing that grey one is better option. When it comes to background color my philosofy is:

• Black is color of depression even if it saves eyes.
• Too much white (background) burns eyes out
• I use grey color behind "border of 50%" (better are grey shades closer to black then white)
• You can also try another colors, try use a CSS3 gradient

The more effective bits of both.

First one is better, as the background colour of the second design is not that good. White background looks good.
